It could take more than once. Remember, though, that the summoning itself could take anywhere from a few hours to a few days! Summoners aren't aware of the passage of time while they're in their summoning trance, though.

But, should it fail, and they wake up without a portal to greet them, the urge/calling will not be any less. Generally, though, this doesn't happen. At least, not once they've entered the Caverns. They could still resist the calling, though, but it'd be pretty difficult to do so c:

I'm going to add it into the FAQs but basically it becomes evident that the summoner is being called, through the Caverns, by a Hound.

So in that case it's also possible that a summoning fails because the two parties can't come to an agreement for the binding. For instance, one party or the other wants something that the other isn't willing to give up. On the other hand, it's possible to trick the other party into agreeing.... though this may result in an unhealthy relationship. xD

I should note that the hounds are not actually consciously seeking anyone. It just sort of... happens. MYSTERY.
