Flauna lived in the forest she had named after herself. It was a fairly new forest, having existed on Gaia only since its creation. Growing up as the shy young apprentice at the alchemist's, she had found the crowds, pollution, and noise of the towns not much to her liking. As soon as she was of age, she left the shop and took up residence in a quieter place, closer to nature.
Although the other forest inhabitants made excellent company, she rather tired of not having someone to hold a proper conversation with. The irony wasn't lost on her. "I move to get away from people, and when I'm away from people I miss their company." And then she had an idea. If nobody else was around to talk to, she'd have to make her own company... literally.
On the first birthday celebrated in the forest, she mixed a concoction (a new recipe - the old alchemist would have been proud), wished very hard, and poured it onto a few choice leaves.
Within a few weeks (long after Flauna expected to see any results; do birthday wishes have expiry dates?), the leaves "grew". Not in the way you'd expect plant cuttings to grow, no - what Flauna saw were literally flauna: creatures that were half-plant, half-kitten. As they developed under her care, there was more cat and less leaf - though they never really lost their roots to their origins. Most of the adults had wing-shaped leaves on their backs, allowing them to glide through the air; others had only the leaves on their heads, and grew real wings, feathered or batty. The best part was that her wish was granted, for each and every one of them could speak as she had taught them.
As the forest became slightly crowded over time, Flauna and her creations decided it was really best that some of them find new homes - and so she put up adoption posters around the towns, hoping that they would draw someone's attention.
And since you're reading this, they clearly have.
