                    What's a story without a plot?

Open-ended, like our roleplay. As children we didn't color in the lines and as teenagers we'll give you complete freedom to color in, around, on, near - well, you get it, right? With Amortentia we give you a blank slate in which the characters you create and how they react to each other's characters will create plots, many of them we hope. As with everything, though, we do have a few stipulations along with this freedom. Please run all plots by S.U.B. via pm before enacting any of them. We don't want you to suddenly decide to bring Voldemort back for a second coming and have pantyhose raining from the sky. As fun as that sounds, there must be some sort of limit in order to create a sound environment for us all to play in.

First of all, this is an ELITE roleplay. Not kidding here. If you're planning on joining you better be a pretty damn good writer, because we're not accepting any less (see application process ). You should properly use the different they're, their, and there; it and it's; your and you're, etc. Spelling mistakes are to be expected, but try to make as few as possible. It's a good idea to download firefox if you're a bad speller, or type your posts in a word document of some sort.

Quality over quantity, of course, but at the same time we don't want you writing two paragraphs and expecting your fellow roleplayers to have enough to respond to. That does not mean you can write three paragraphs about your character tying his/her shoes. Keep in mind that your post should be interesting to read, not tedious. That said, you should be writing at least 750 words per post, about the equivalent of one page of a standard word document. Writer's block is unfortunate but please, no less. Also, this should go without saying, but a 750-word introduction post is not acceptable. Aim for your introductions to be roughly twice the minimum.

On the subject of interesting posts, please decorate yours! Pictures, lyrics, etc. Keep it readable, and don't use a ton of pictures just so you can make the post look longer. Please keep your text at size 10 or 11 -- any smaller or bigger is difficult to read or obnoxious. Posts should be written in third person, using as few personal pronouns as possible ("you", "i", "we", etc.), fairly appropriate (meaning skip over the sex. we don't need or want to hear the details, and if you're into that kind of thing this isn't the place for you), colors that don't blind us. Also, at the end of each post, put your character's location.
Ex: "Daisy is: walking to potions class and worrying about Amy."

We want to keep this roleplay alive for as long as possible, which means everybody needs to post at least once a week. If you are unable to post because of another roleplayer's inactivity, feel free to contact us. While we do bite (and hard), we will appreciate you taking the initiative to contact us, and we definitely will not be nice if you're holding somebody up. If two weeks go by without you posting, and without an explanation, we'll pm you. Two unresponsive days afterward we'll expel your character unless you come back with a damn good reason as to why we shouldn't.

Ask our approval about plots. This is a free plot roleplay, not a plotless roleplay. If you'd like something drastic to happen, or even if you just want your character to throw a party, tell us beforehand.

On to the profile stuff. We want your profiles pretty as you can make them: nice graphics (not just emoticons or google image collages), no horrible fonts, decent quality, colors that don't clash, and so on. This doesn't mean you need gorgeous photoshopped images; just simple, neat-looking ones will do as long as you use them well.

You should be able to develop your character and make him/her as realistic as possible. The point of profiles is for the other roleplayers to get a sense of what your character is like and how they behave.

Absolutely NO mary/gary sues/stus, or generally stereotypical characters. For ******** sake, we want variety here. Something interesting. The entire point of a self-proclaimed manwhore is completely lost when every straight male in a roleplay is one, and we will reject your character if we feel there are too many of that particular stereotype, whatever it may be. Characters with "special" abilities, talents, and so on happen to be our pet peeve. If you aren't sure whether your character is mary sue/gary stu-ish, you can either
                        a) Ask one of us -- we'll be all too happy to give you a straight-up critique, nothing held back, or
                        b) Go here and take the mary sue litmus test. We're dead serious about this.

This roleplay is for 5th through 7th years only, meaning that your character's age should fall in the range of 14-18. You don't get to have a character who, through their supernatural intelligence, skipped eleventy-blue grades and is a twelve-year-old seventh year. 14 though 18, people.

Absolutely NO CANNON CHARACTERS ALLOWED, whatsoever. You must ask us if you want to make a half-veela, werewolf, animagus, or the like. You need our approval! This also means your character WILL NOT be Voldemort's child, sibling, aunt -- it doesn't ******** matter if he/she is Voldemort's great-great-great-great-great grandchild, because we will not allow a character like that in our roleplay.

All the obvious: no godmodding, ask us if you want your character to die/get expelled, blah blah blah. You're experienced roleplayers. You should know this stuff.

Be realistic -- in the harry potter context. Once you're in the magical world, your connections to the muggle world become weaker; and if you're a pureblood, they barely exist. If you have a pureblood whose favorite band is nine inch nails, you better have a good explanation for it.

Yeah, we're bitches, but we're nice bitches. The point of roleplaying is to have fun, so if you're not enjoying yourself, why bother? These rules are to help everyone enjoy this roleplay (and to preserve our delicate sanity), so follow them. We're not afraid to kick you out if you offend multiple times, or if we tell you to stop doing something and you don't.

We reserve the right to make any additions we deem necessary to this list. We'll give notice in the ooc as best we can, but check back here every once in a while to be sure, okay?

So we've interested you thus far, huh? We're flattered. (: No, really. We just have a few more things to regulate and you're on your way to making a profile! First off - if you cannot follow the guidelines outlined in our rules, please leave. You will be wasting your own time and ours, and we're bound for time as it is.

In your background check we ask you private message sub - stupid unoriginal bitches - with the following:

                          • at least three post samples. One introduction and two replies are best, but if you can only supply QUALITY introductions or QUALITY replies, or any combination of them as long as it totals 3, you're fine.
                          • regularity. How often are you online? How many replies are you capable of churning out in a weeks time? If you don't think you can supply at least 1, and this is not asking much, please do not waste your time. We require one post a week unless given special permission.
                          • and for my sake (meaty speaking!), which book is your favorite? You earn major love points if you pick mine. ;D

Pending approval: You need a majority approval here. If two of us approve, you're in. (Think American Idol.) You'll then move onto the PROFILE (click). It might seem like a great deal of information just looking at it, but it's not as tedious at you might think. We do know that you have lives and won't be able to sit down and complete the profile all at once. Take your time and steady yourself. We want your best work. Please do be mindful that if your profile is not completed within a generous amount of time, you'll only receive one warning from us. Through a profile, the rest of your fellow roleplayers learn about your character. We wouldn't make you do something frivolous because we like to see you squirm. We're bitches, not sadistic. (:

Finally, PM us a link to the profile, along with a 100 x 100 icon of your character. We'll decide on his/her house and wand, and we'll tell you if there's anything you need to change.

As always, direct any questions to our inbox.

Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
                    A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can top them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
                    The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
                    Where you ought to be.

By consensus we will choose which
house suits your character best. You can challenge our decision, but that does not guarantee we'll change it. Don't be afraid to ask us about our decision. We realize you might not agree with it.

                    We'll also be assigning your
character's wand. Your character's wand information should be inserted into the third post of your character thread under the quidditch position. You can directly quote "Ollivander" or you can write your own tidbit about your wand given the information we will supply you with.

This is how it's going to work:
There are 24 prefects (remember, prefects must be in fifth year or above. And please, please, please don't make your character a prefect if it's the last thing someone with his/her personality or history would do).
There is one Head Girl and one Head Boy, and each is a seventh year. Same as with prefects -- please be true to your character's personality. A rebellious slacker is not going to be Head Boy or Girl.

If you want your character to be a prefect or Head Girl/Boy, PM us. We have the right to deny your request if we think it doesn't make sense for your character.

The Head Girl and Boy are the only ones with the power to deduct or add points. We will be monitoring them to insure nobody is abusing his or her power. Someone with a Head Boy/Girl character wouldn't be prone to abusing their power anyway, but as a precaution we must.

There are 24 prefects in all: two of each sex in each house in each year. Confusing? In other words, of the fifth years there are eight prefects. One female and one male each in Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, and Ravenclaw. Same for sixth and seventh; however, if, say, the Head Girl is a Slytherin and the Head Boy is a Gryffindor, there will only be one 7th year prefect for Slytherin and Gryffindor.

                        Prefects
                        Fifth year: Laurence Hughes
                        Sixth year: Sebastian Girard

Lunch has just been served in the Great Hall, and most students left for Hogsmeade around 10, though a few stragglers may be coming along any minute now...

There is no Slytherin party this weekend, only a nice Hogsmeade trip. The first week of classes are over.

YOU ARE THE EVERLIVING GHOST OF WHAT σиcє ωαs

It felt strange to be outside again. "Strange" was an abstract and perhaps inadequate adjective, but there was no better way to aptly describe the emotions and thoughts brewing in August Quinn's head. It was strange to be allowed out in the open again; strange to be free from the watchful eye of nurse upon nurse upon doctor; strange to feel this sensation of liberation after what could have been an eternity of observant imprisonment. Even now, a fair week or two after her release, August was still readjusting to her old life in careful baby steps.

Still, it was an unusually bright, crisp sort of morning, and August couldn't help but feel just a tiny bit uplifted. The sunlight, left over from the summer which had so recently ended, was shining down as though it were spending every last ounce of intensity it possessed in an attempt to get it over with now. It beat down on August's head, on the wavy locks of cornhusk-colored hair that reached down her back and waved gently in the slight breeze. The witch squinted as she waited for her mother and cousin to walk through the King's Cross column, a pile of luggage lying at her feet. With thin arms folded across her chest and one foot tapping away in an obvious betrayal of her impatience, August was the picture of teenage sullenness. Her eyes were trained on her feet, size 8's encased in a pair of flat blue-and-white oxford shoes, in an effort to avoid meeting the gaze of anyone watching her intently. It wasn't that she expected to suffer through the first day or two of school without some mishaps and rude stares. She had anticipated all of that before, on the car drive to Mariella's house and then on the one to King's Cross. It was only that she was not yet ready to face the blunt glances, the whispers that would invariably blossom forth from former friends' lips as she passed. Before any of that she needed some strength, some support in the form of one of her friends.

"August! There you are," August's mother said as she burst through the column, a tired smile on her lips. Rosalie Quinn's eyes were watery, threatening to overflow as she wrapped her arms around her daughter's thin frame. August was not at the liberty to understand the full extent of Rosalie's sentiments concerning her daughter's recent stay at a rehabilitation center. But it was easy to guess. "Je vais vous manquer," Rosalie whispered in August's ear, leaning down just a little. I'm going to miss you.

Rosalie was a tall, slender woman with a pretty smile and a face that implied she had once been devastatingly gorgeous. She was an inch taller than her daughter, and while her hair had once been the same shade, over the years she had become a wispy blond. When August was small she had dug through her mother's belongings to find old photographs from Rosalie's childhood. She'd compared the picture to her own youthful face in the mirror, noting the similarities (the same wavy hair, the arching nose, the pouting lips) and wondering if she would ever be quite as beautiful.

          "Wait! Wait for me!"

August was startled out of her reverie by the high-pitched sound of her cousin's voice as the girl emerged on the right side of the station. Mariella's blond hair was down, streaming around her shoulders in soft semi-waves. Her cheeks were pink with excitement, eyes wide. August suspected her younger cousin was a good deal happier for the beginning of the school year than she was. Didn't she have reason to be? It was true that it wasn't much of August's business, but from what she'd gathered, Hogwarts was more of a home for Mariella than her house in Southampton ever could or would be. While August preferred to escape from the school, Mari escaped to it. So the younger girl's enthusiasm was understandable, to say the least.

Rosalie loosened her grasp on August, turning to smile at her niece. "We're not going anywhere, ma petite fleur," She said fondly, her accent a familiar yet odd mix of French, English, and perhaps something else. She picked up one of Mariella's bags in one hand, another in the other hand, and nodded for August to help as well. With a roll of her eyes August complied, grabbing the handles of a trunk and carrying it to the train as though it were packed with stones. Mari flitted about in circles around them, skipping and jumping around as though there were too much joy within her to remain on the ground, chained by gravity. A few minutes later found August's bags aboard as well, and Mariella already departed, presumably to find her friends and reconvene after a long summer without them. August remained in place, tugging at the hem of her plaid miniskirt with anxious fingers. She raised her chin, staring into her mother's eyes as if trying to memorize them until she saw them again.

"Where to next?" August managed to blurt out, attempting to keep the pathetic hopefulness locked within. As far as she knew, her mother hadn't spent a year in any once place since August had received her Hogwarts letter at eleven and had left for school. Rosalie did have an excuse; her job as an ambassador of the Ministry meant, by definition alone, a good deal of traveling. But there were plenty of ambassadors who spent more than a few months in each place, August knew. After all, for a period of her childhood her only friends had been other ambassadors' children and purebloods. August sensed that was part of the attraction of the job for her mother, though. The ever-changing, ever-moving atmosphere. It required no permanence. Maybe that was something Rosalie Quinn had needed, ever since the death of August's father.

"No sé. Mongolia? ¿Tal vez? Rosalie shrugged. There was a tired smile forming at the corners of her mouth, one that was made of equal parts sadness and love. She kissed August's cheek tenderly, enveloping her in an embrace one last time before releasing the girl and stepping away. "I'll miss you," She called as she continued to back up, waving her hand as the doors of the Hogwarts Express closed and August was left alone, again. "I'll miss you too, Maman." August's eyes watered with salty tears and her vision clouded momentarily as she whispered the inaudible words.

The majority of her trip was spent holed up in the bathroom, alone.

It was hours and hours later and August was finally entering the Great Hall, her eyes taking in every single detail she'd missed over the past several months. She breathed in the familiar smell of the room -- sort of clean, as if she were, in fact, outdoors, and the ceiling was not an illusion, mixed with the scent of food, of course, and perhaps a little teenage angst. It was quickly filling up, the sounds that all but belonged to the enormous room making their was to her ears. Everyone was laughing, talking, shouting, recounting stories of their exciting (or otherwise) summers and being generally chuffed to see each other again.

Despite the grin this brought to August's rather out-of-practice lips, she was aware of the feeling of being an outsider, looking in. She wasn't part of the action, and perhaps this was as much her fault as anyone else's. She'd chosen to spend the trip to school alone, she'd chosen to sit in a carriage on the way to the castle with a bunch of third years, she'd chosen not to come up to any of her old friends and say hello. Well, to be honest, she'd chosen to stay invisible for a bit, rather than actively ignoring anyone. She wanted them to come up to her.

August sat down at the Slytherin table, a little ways off from most of the other sixth years. She avoided their gaze, staring instead at her plate. What was she supposed to say? How did she bridge this gap of not only two months not spent at school with the rest but a summer of rehabilitation and weight gain and truth? Most people at Hogwarts didn't know her truth. She'd done that on purpose, concealed all the important parts of her character from those who wanted to know most. Maybe even Zach didn't know as much about her as he thought he did. She'd rarely, if ever, talked to him -- really talked, not just chatted or bantered or whispered mid-sex. She had never thought their relationship was like that. Maybe Zach wouldn't want to hear those sorts of things from her. He had Evangeline to listen to about intelligent things, didn't he?

August's face contorted slightly at the thought of that girl. She must have been absolutely thrilled to hear of August's early leave from school. After all, she'd been handed two months absolutely free of the presence of the one girl she absolutely detested. Just what she wanted, right?

With a hand that quivered just slightly, August spooned some food onto her plate. She was unaware of the glances coming from her fellow students, but she could imagine how they were watching her. Seeing if she'd really recovered or not. August barely noticed what she was serving herself; something green, something brown, something that was hard and felt like bread beneath her fingers. She fond herself cutting it all up into tiny pieces, cutting and cutting and cutting as if to put off eating it all.

A half hour later she was still sitting there, plate still mostly full. She'd managed to eat some green beans and just a little bit of mashed potatoes, but it felt funny going down. She hadn't even been listening as the first years were sorted, had only just managed to remember to applaud for the ones who were sorted into Slytherin, and had certainly failed to boo for the ones sorted into Gryffindor as she had done with friends countless times before. A few people had glanced at her as though about to come up and say hello, but when she'd failed to look up from her plate they'd retreated to the safety of their own friends and had left her alone, assuming that was what she wanted.

She wasn't quite sure what she wanted, though. After all this time spent at the Rehabilitation for Failing Wizards and Witches, she would have expected to feel a sensation of relief. Determination. A certainty that what she wanted was to be okay, to be 100% recovered. Happy. But little had ever been completely clear in August's life, so maybe it was no surprise that this wasn't, either. Still, she'd wanted more clarity than this. Just looking at her, everyone probably thought she was just the same as before, if a little heavier. That was really the worst part: they'd made her gain weight. And a substantial amount, too, at least in her mind. Was it really necessary? She didn't personally think so, but she'd been assured it was all part of the process and that things would go much smoother if she wasn't just a pile of skin and bones. She wondered now if they'd only said that so when it was time for her to start school again she'd be out of the range of weight in which they could not lawfully release her. But that was the cynic speaking in her, she supposed.

But you'll find that nowadays
I've mended all my ways
Repented, seen the light, and made a switch

He stared at the little nuts with narrowed blue eyes, his lips a tight frown, his fingers gently tapping on the long table. Who had put those there? Was this some sort of weird little joke? He looked to the left and then to the right but he saw no one grinning at him like an idiot. No joke then. He turned his attention back on the nuts, making no move to touch them or to push them away. Stupid nuts. Stupid nuts of death. Stupid walnuts. His fingers tapped a little more rapidly. They were in a basket, stacked nice and tall. Some students reached out and grabbed them, bringing them to their mouth for a bite. He wrinkled his nose, remembering what had happened when he'd done that same thing many years before. The hand that wasn't tapping against the table move to his throat, touching it, remembering the feeling of it closing up. Stupid walnuts had tried to kill him then and they were going to try to kill him that night. The very first night back at Hogwarts and they were already plotting. Or...maybe...someone had put them there. His eyes instantly moved to the Ravenclaw table, looking for the Hag. He spotted her and gritted his teeth, suppressing a growl. She had done it, he was sure now. She had put the walnuts there somehow. She was trying to kill him.

Oh, but it would not work. Not on him. He was no moron. No way in hell was he putting one of those in his mouth. Wishing he had the power to kill with his eyes, he turned his attention back on the Hag's little weapons. He stopped tapping and reached out, using his index finger to push the basket full of walnuts away from him. Some students were looking at him, but he ignored them, pushing the basket as far as he could reach. Satisfied that they were now away from him and his plate, he relaxed, even smiling slightly. He looked over at the Hag and resisted the strong urge to lift his middle finger. It was hard to resist but he managed with his new found self control. How long this self control would last was the question, though. With his dislike for the one named Evangeline Harper (AKA: the Hag), it was doubtful to last too much longer. Especially when he would be forced to witness the flirtation between her and his best friend.

No. He was hungry and he would not ruin his appetite thinking of such things. Hannibal took a deep breath, releasing it slowly, and shook his head. He would not think of the Hag until he was at least done with his food. Then, maybe, he could throw it up all over her. He smiled pleasantly at the thought as he started to fill his plate with foods that would not be the death of him. His stomach growled, demanding he feed himself soon and he gave it a gentle pat, silently promising that food would soon be filling it. As he filled his plate, he took a glance around the Great Hall, hardly paying attention as new students began to be sorted. He had paid attention to the ceremony until his fourth year. By then, he just didn't care. Although, when he heard a loud Slytherin boom, he would glance over. He didn't clap or try to make the little first years comfortable. He didn't like children and first years were close enough to children. So were most of the second years. Third years were alright, he supposed. Not as bad, but it wasn't until they got to fourth years that he could really tolerate them and even converse with them...and occasionally introduce some of the little cute boys to some pure homosexual sex.

Plate filled, he started to eat, eyes moving to the Gryffindor table. He smiled slightly seeing Samantha, the Captain Shirtless stalker and the one he liked to refer to as little sister. She was pretty child-like, but she was one of the very few he could stand. She was awful weird sometimes, though. Extreme weird. Shaking his head, he looked down his own table, eyes moving from person to person. His eyes stopped and rested on the most handsome guy in the entire school (next to himself, of course). The guy he called his best friend, his first lover, his only love and the guy he wanted to beat the s**t out of for being such an insensitive a*****e: the infamous Zachary Simmons. He hadn't seen him much over the past summer, but that had been his own fault. His family had spent a month on vacation on a warm beach where he'd tried to relax and not think about Zach for a bit. But, that had been a waste effort. All he could think about was Zach. He was almost positive that he was in love with the guy. After all, he'd never felt like this for someone else.

He'd never told Zach how he felt, though. Zach and the word "love" didn't mix well together, he knew. He supposed he was a little afraid to tell Zach, afraid of how he might react. But, there was another reason he hadn't told him yet. The Hag. The woman he hated more than any one else in his entire life. Merlin, he'd gotten so sick and tired of seeing them together the year before. His grades had actually slipped because of it. Seeing those two together brought up so many feelings and he'd just wanted a break from it all. So, he had tried to spend as much time away from home as he possibly could. But, the vacation had to end some time and when it did, he'd realized how much he'd missed Zach...and at the same time, he still didn't want to see him. Maybe if he saw him less and less, the feelings would just disappear. Of course they hadn't though. He sighed softly, shaking his head and taking another bite of his food. He wasn't sure if Zach was upset with him for kind of ignoring him for most of the summer. He actually hoped that he was. Zach being upset with him sure as hell beat Zach not caring one way or another.

"Merlin, I need to get laid." He mumbled the phrase softly, wondering if that would relieve some of his pent up stress and anger. Probably. It usually worked. When was the last time he'd gotten hot and heavy with someone? He thought back on it for a moment and realized (with a bit of shock) that it had been since a little before the end of school the year before. Merlin's beard, that was surprising for him. It was the longest he'd gone without sex since he'd first started having it. He tilted his head, getting lost in his thoughts. Surely there had been one time during the summer when he got some a**? He thought for one long hard moment before blinking. Nope. No a** over the summer. Wait till Sam hears about this. She's not going to believe it... He shook his head again, still a little amazed at himself. There are been plenty of good looking guys when he was on the beach. What the bloody hell was wrong with him? Oh, yeah, he couldn't stop thinking about a certain guy...

He pinched himself hard on the arm as a way of declaring that he was an idiot silently. He was almost tempted to beat his head against the Slytherin table but to do so would probably end with the whole Great Hall staring at him...and would probably end with that b***h Eva laughing at him and making some crack to Zach about him. No way was he going to give that hag any ammo to use. He rubbed the spot where he'd pinched himself gently, finally managing to tear his eyes away from Zach. Should he go sit by him? He wanted to...Bloody hell, he really wanted to. So...what's stopping you, you bloody no-sex-for-months moron? He grumbled softly before he got up, leaving his plate of food. He'd just fill up another plate at his new spot.

As he was walking down the table, he almost made himself go back to his previous seat. Merlin, what was wrong with him that he was almost scared to talk to his best friend? He pushed the nervousness down as he walked. Finally, he reached Zach and moved to sit beside him. Was it possible for Zach to get even sexier over summer break? Or was it because he hadn't seen him in over a month and a half? Maybe both? Yeah, probably a mix of the two.
"Careful, Zach, I think that bit of jello is looking at you funny," he said with a smirk, pointing at a bowl of jello that was set a few feet down. "How was your summer?"
