Introduction:

User ImageHello Gaia,

I would like to propose an adventure-type role-play involving zombies, and the ever-feared apocalypse. The idea would be to bring about the realistic and surreal problems of a massive virus pandemic that caused its victims to become zombies. (not-so-fun-fact: A six year old child in Mexico who had caught the H1N1 virus (swine flu, as it is commonly known) died for three hours, then came back to life and lunged at his own mother in rage.) What would we do if that happened? Would we run to the mall? The country? A farm? Maybe even a large local food/gun retailer. Maybe we would defend ourselves in the basement of our house. Maybe we would go out trying to kill any and all zombies in sight with a sword. Who knows, so, let's find out. The basic point of the proposed RP would be to have fun, and also work out the problems of such an event.

The storyline for this role-play is based in the not-too-distant future of the year 2013. The world has advanced and continued on its expected path. National problems were stabilizing and overall the world was moving onward, without hindrance, into the next technological age. Some people said the world was going to end in 2012. Some people thought that divine intervention would bring judgment upon the planet. Some thought that an asteroid would annihilate life from the planet. But it wasn't the big things that we should have worried about. It was something so that you can't see it with the naked eye. A cell. A rapidly evolving, constantly changing cell that expands and multiplies, at the use of its host. We know this cell as "swine flu". With an ever-changing appearance, our bodies are built to fight the good fight against it and win. But what happens when a cell outsmarts a human?

The H1Z1 virus was not the first of its kind. There had been other reports of diseases that turned their host into an incubation factory, at the unfortunate cost of the host's life. But it was the first that took complete control of the actions and mindset of its victims. The virus learned how to tell humans what to do, make the spread of its own plague their top priority. The first few victims this virus took was in the condensed ghettos of New York, where the perfect breeding ground set the stage for its rapid evolution. The virus rapidly spread like a plague, taking any human life that came close. The hosts of the virus helped spread the virus into more densely populated areas, until the entire coastline of America was under the threat of this virus. The virus could spread easily from a bite, infected blood contact to an open wound, having infected blood enter your mouth or even your eye.

The H1Z1 virus seemed unstoppable. Zombies never tired of chasing their targets, never tired of beating them and biting and never stopped in their rage. Armies fought bravely against it, nations tried to stop it and people began to think that the end had finally come. Now the world has become a quiet wasteland. The bright lights seen from space now dimmed and the human race seems to have disappeared. But on the dark city streets roams vile creatures, flesh torn and rotting, their moans carrying through the wind and night. These things are the after-effects of the H1Z1 virus, commonly called "Zombies". They care only for the spread of the virus they carry, and care little of pain or suffering. The proud cities humanity once owned are now nothing but desolate concrete jungles.

You make up the 0.06% of the world's population that has been smart or strong enough to evade the virus during the whole conflict with it. You have survived to this day, without being mauled or shot to death. Feel lucky. But keep in mind, the virus is constantly changing and looking for new ways to bring you under its influence. Now, you must find a way to survive. That's what humanity has been known for, after all; survival. It has been six months since the infection hit America. Your ultimate goal doing anything in life is to ensure your own survival for as long as you can, and now it has only gotten harder. You reside in the ruins of a city and must find a way to live, by avoiding, killing or escaping the zombies that roam the streets and buildings. Welcome to the Apocalypse. Use bullets, brains or brawn to survive.

Rules:

User Image01: HAVE FUN!! Really, it's what all role-plays are about, right? Just have fun. Throw in a joke if you think it's funny. Go ahead and maim hundreds of zombies, but always keep in mind the realism factor.

02: We don't talk about Fight Club. Really, we don't here.

03: Be active! Seriously. Joining a role-play is, in fact, a commitment. A commitment to those in the role-play, and to check up on it once daily, if possible. This will help keep things moving and fluid.
03a: Inactivity will not be taken lightly. I'm not going to "call Thor's thunder on you", but there will be action taken.
03b: If you are inactive for three days I will take a small amount of control of your character, if they are holding up the RP. I'll just say that your character did something just to get the RP moving again. Nothing big.
03c: If you don't post for two weeks your character might even be killed off, or I will take control of them to reserve them for when you get back. Let me know if you're going on hiatus. If you don't declare hiatus after two weeks, I can't promise your character survives.

04: Violating TOS is unacceptable. Curse however much you want, swear, complain, include gore descriptions in your post, talk about whatever you want, just DO NOT under any circumstances, violate Gaia's TOS. That is a given. Kiss if you want, describe... scenes, but don't go into them. Really, I couldn't care less about what you do, but this is Gaia's site.

05: God-modding or Auto-hitting is also not allowed. I won't tear your head off for doing it, but I want you to think logically about the realism of attacks. If you're all alone against a swarm of 10+ zombies, your best bet is to run and lock yourself in a room, because you will not be able to melee the zombies to death. Unloading your entire clip would be okay, but if you've ever fired an automatic weapon, you know how inaccurate they are if fired on full-auto.

06: Be prepared to die. Really. If you die, you die. Just re-make a new character or even play as infected. Don't take really long designing the perfect character, because mistakes can be made and the next second you're alone with one bullet in the chamber and thirty zombies running your direction. And that bullet's not killing a zombie.

07: I have the ability to add or modify any rules and chances are I will add more down the road, if I think they're fair. I will announce when I change or add any new rules. =]

Profile Skeletons:

Please ensure that you've read and reviewed the rules before making a profile. Use the already-made profiles as an example of what yours should look like. Please, for the love all things related to zombies, DO NOT send me in profiles saying that your character has "special powers" or something, like because of the virus. If your character had the virus, the only "special reaction" would be your new-found taste for cannibalism.

Jason Hunter
"Get your gear and get here!"

Gender: Male
Age: 23
Weight: 175 lbs
Height: 5'10"
Status: Alive
Appearance: [Sergeant Jason Hunter]
He wears Urban MARPAT BDU with boots, leather gloves, and an MCU2/P Protective Mask to cover his face. Blood has stained most of his clothes and his hair is normally messy. His mask is modified to eliminate the need of a filter, allowing him to breathe easily though the modification is only good for keeping blood out of the mask. Wears a short-range radio device on his left ear and carries an ALICE pack whenever he can't set it somewhere. Wears a celtic cross and a pair of dogtags (one on his boot). He has gray hair from a trait his father had, where he lost most of the color from his hair after high school.

History: Jason was raised in a middle-class family in Ohio and graduated high school with less than satisfactory grades. Out of high school and seeing nothing really interesting to do for a job, he enlisted with the United States Marine Corps with his brother. Finally finding something he liked doing, Jason did well with the Marines and pushed through the ranks faster than most. After his four year contract, Jason decided to leave for college, also with his brother. The two brothers fresh out of the Corps bought several firearms and military-grade equipment with the money the government had paid them and an apartment off-campus. The two were probably better prepared than anyone for a zombie apocalypse, but in truth they were just gun enthusiasts. After a month of getting acquainted with college life, reports of a violent viral outbreak spread across the news. A month later a national emergency was declared and all inactive military personnel were told to report to their respective CO's. Grabbing their own weapons and gear, the brothers headed out and reported to their commanding officer, but never made it in time. The panicking crowds and violent behaviors of blood-covered people created too much of a problem. Four months later, Jason and Marcus are in their local MegaMart with a band of survivors.

Personality: Jason is your optimistic, level-headed guy who tries to improve every situation in any way possible. He's a bit manic when it comes to killing things and probably enjoys blowing up things a bit too much. He is always thinking ahead, of the long-term goals and quick, efficient ways to fix problems. He tries to think of himself more or less as a leader because of his career and looks out for the commonwealth of everyone. While Jason is friendly, it only takes little trying to make him mad. He also tends to be a bit lazy, but his brother is normally the one pushing him to do things.

Inventory:
Bushmaster ACR (18" SPR version, .308 caliber with 4-10x scope, flashlight and a powerful laserlight attachment)
USP .45 (laserlight attachment, pistol sheathed on right thigh)
Survival knife (sheathed over the left side of his torso, facing downwards kinda like this)
Two StracTech FAST systems on his hips for his rifle.
In his ALICE pack, he carries a long-range radio, suppressors for his pistol and rifle, a spare rifle barrel, ammunition, food, first aid kits and various tools like a GPS system and utility pliers.

Marcus Hunter
"You're in my kill-zone."

Gender: Male
Age: 25
Weight: 180 lbs
Height: 5'9"
Status: Alive
Appearance: [Corporal Marcus Hunter]
He wears Urban MARPAT BDU, boots, short-range radio headset, leather gloves and an MCU2/P Protective Mask to cover his face. His mask is modified to eliminate the need of a filter, allowing him to breathe easily though the modification is only good for keeping blood out of the mask. There's normally a cigar/cigarette/match in his mouth, since he's constantly chewing on something. He wears a silver .500S&W round on a chain on his neck along with his dogtags. A single dogtag is tied into the lacing on his boot.

History: Marcus had his fair share of troubles growing up. He always saw violence as an easy option to solve some social problems, like the senior bully he met as a freshman and nearly killed. He has a long list of probation and police records that would take perhaps a whole day to read. While he has a somewhat aggressive history, Marcus is smarter than your average guy, leaving school with a decent GPA. After taking automotive classes for two years, Marcus signed up for the military. His little brother, Jason, supported his decision and even decided to join up with him. The two brothers went into active combat duty as infantry and carried out many successful missions. When the two brothers got back from their four-year general enlistment, Jason signed up for college and Marcus went with him. A month afterwards, reports were circulating stating that an unkown plague was striking the nation, killing off entire towns in a night. It wasn't long after that a national emergency was declared and Marcus and Jason were pulled right back into active duty. Grabbing their guns and setting out, the two never knew what they were facing. Joining in the defense of the city, the two brothers fought on as their comrades died and their lines broke. When the order was given to pull back to the second line of defense, Marcus and Jason did so, but never found their fellow soldiers. After finding their command post ruined and overrun, the two brothers fled and found a place to stay. Six months later, they find themselves in a MegaMart in Dayton, Ohio.

Personality: Marcus is known for returning favors. Be nice to him and he'll be nice to you. Give off a bad first impression or act like a jerk, and he'll be your arch enemy. Save his life, and he'll save yours. etc, etc. He will take no crap from anyone and won't let people disrespect him or his brother. He has an undying bond with his brother, since the two have been almost inseparable since childhood. He is either constantly chewing on a strike-anywhere match or smoking a cigarette. His common excuse for smoking is that he can outrun anyone in the room at any given time.

Lola Grim
"They're ugly and they're dirty and they're dumb and I don't even care if they are dead, they're not touching me!"

Gender: Female
Age: 22
Weight: 126lb
Height: 5'2"
Status: Alive
Appearance: [Red]
Lola has long red hair that's usually tied back away from her face. She's short and pretty skinny, and tends to wear clothes that are too big for her for the manouverability. She wears vests a lot, and tucks the bottom of her trousers into her jeans. She often wears a dark green hooded top at night time to hide herself. The one piece of jewelry she has is her fathers wedding ring on a chain. She considers it a lucky charm.

History: Lola was a troublesome kid. She lived with her dad after her mother ran off, and in order to reign in his wild child, he sent her to cadets. She listened to very little of it, but absorbed some of the survival skills. After everything kicked off, her father and her holed themselves up in a block of flats, but her father killed himself, and she moved on to try and locate more survivors.

Personality: Often stroppy, sarcastic or caustic to a fault, she doesn't act very girly unless she needs to manipulate someone. Lola has a dry sense of humour and doesn't deal very well with other women. She's been known to throw fists rather than words.

Inventory:
-An assault rifle with very little ammo (2 clips, mostly used for melee)
    - a steel baseball bat
    - length of rope
    - swiss army knife

Tracey Komamura
""Oh, this can't possibly end well...""

Gender: Female
Age: 19
Weight: 136lbs
Height: 5'7"
Status: Alive
Appearance: [Tracer]
Tracey wears a form fitting track suit, with a green sweater over it as well as a plaid skirt. She has well worn but still in good condition running shoes, and plain white socks. She's not too concerned with appearance, especially since the outbreak, so she always looks like she just woke up.

History:
Tracer grew up in a rather average Japanese-American household, her father had met her mother while on active duty in Japan. They moved back to America and got married, and soon after, Tracey was born. While the economy was relatively harsh, and her father often switched jobs after being honorably discharged from the military, she never really had want of anything growing up, always being well fed, having good friends, and always enjoying the lot she had been dealt with in life. A very active sportswoman, she was the High School track star, finishing first in national competitions across various categories, where she assuredly achieved her proverbial "Fifteen minutes of Fame." While her grades were not exactly top notch, she always pulled through, and managed to get into a good university on sports scholarships. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to get very far into her college career due to the zombie outbreak, her initial response being "Does this mean I don't have to finish that History report?" Now, being perhaps the only survivor from the college, she has no idea what has become of her family or friends, being several states away. So far, she has managed to survive due to speed and stamina over anything else, easily able to outrun just about anything.

Personality: Tracey is brash, bold, and seemingly incapable of thinking things through. Her pure speed and endurance have gotten her so far, but without a little help, it's unlikely she'll survive, mostly because she'll go insane without someone to talk to for so long.

Inventory:
    Black .22 six shot revolver
two Fannie packs with various small supplies and munitions
    flashlight
    mini crowbar (about 10" )
    20oz drink bottle
    steel toe shoe slippers.

"

Gender: Male
Age: 24
Weight: 180
Height: 66
Status: Alive
Appearance: [Cecil]
Wears a hooded duster coat with buckles attached to it, wears several rings and a pendant that is concealed at most times. Most striking feature is his multicoloured eyes (one blue, and one purple). Wears pants similar to his coat with straps and buckles, attached to pants is a holster that he moves around for convenience and depending on the situation. Carries a Backpack to contain his items.

History: Cecil was raised in a small town somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere (eastern Washington). He tended to be the troublemaker of the town but seemed to be able to evade the cops at any turn. This was due to his interest in parkour(free running) and his ability to climb nearly any surface he could get a grip on. As a result of his training he is quite strong and fast (but not inhumanly so). He was in Ohio hanging out with a few friends in Columbus when the disease hit, he was the only one in his group to survive. His current location is a MegaMart.

Personality: Kind of an outcast and a troublemaker, he is very sarcastic and morbid, but trustworthy in a pinch. Not very skilled with firearms, he is learning how slowly. His preferred weapons are close combat.

Konstatine Markenz
""To my flock, I must attend.""

Gender: Male
Age: 49
Weight: 193
Height: 5'9''
Status: Alive
Appearance: [Father Markenz]

History: A Russian born Orthodox-Christian, Konstantine grew up in St.Petersburg, spending much of his childhood studying engineering and knowing machines. Though as he aged, he began to become bored with the little satisfaction his machines gave him, as they caused no one no real solutions to problems. He soon joined the church as an pastor, moving to the United States, leaving his motherland behind to it's vast industrialization and modernizing times. He settled down in a peaceful town, holding onto a small Church and a congregation of a few hundred, nothing special. When suddenly his congregation began their transformation into the undead, Father Konstantine quickly became saddened, locking himself in his Church away from the chaos and hell outside. A few days later, Konstantine emerged with his father's Winchester Rifle, the rifle strangely sporting a large caliber bullet. Over 3 short days, the Priest had laid an assortment of traps for his flock, traveling the rooftops of his borough, dispatching and cleansing wherever the cursed souls of his former churchgoers wandered. He never goes far from his Church, but if some come close, they can hear his rantings as he hunts.

Personality: He's rather off his rocker, deeply depressed and lonely, but is deeply involved to release his congregation from their eternal undead torment, by killing them of course. He is generous though, to any living he comes across, as he is a lonely man, and it is good to know that the world hasn't completely fallen around him.

Sylvia, his Father's Winchester Rifle, has a strange caliber larger than the normal .22.

User ImageZombies:

The hosts of the H1Z1 virus have been dubbed "zombies" by both popular culture and the humans that manage to survive its powerful curse. Their behavior is very spontaneous, as they are attracted to almost anything that moves, makes sound, or gives off light. Even then, they prefer to be quiet, dwell in dark areas and stay in one place. Zombies are easy to sneak up on, but anything louder than a whisper and they will be distracted from their boredom and chase after whatever is making the noise. Shining lights at them, shooting them, touching them or even breathing can sometimes be all that is needed to earn their attention. What they lack in spatial awareness, zombies make up for in pure aggression. If zombies spot a survivor or anything loud, moving or flashing, they will pursue in swarms and in a full sprint. Zombies do not get tired, and they barely feel pain. Their limited ability to "live" has also earned them the name "the undead". They need food to survive, and they prefer anything with meat or that they can infect. Zombies slowly rot and the longer they've been a zombie, the more obvious they are, but they are most easily recognized by the regurgitated blood on themselves and violent disposition.

Killing zombies can be a bit tricky. While a shot to the torso with a good heart-stopping bullet would kill a normal human, zombies need more rounds to shut down complete body function. Or just one shot to the head does the trick. Decapitation works most effectively, incineration will also do the trick and a good, brutal maiming with a melee weapon will also stop a zombie. However, sneaking past zombies might be the smartest idea, given that if one zombie sees another zombie run, they have the tendency to follow, and large swarms of zombies have been proven extremely lethal. Caution should be exercised around zombies and logic should be used in all of your decisions. Don't panic.

This post is for the, err, DM of the role-play. If you want to call it that... In posts like these, general statements about the situation are made. e.g., this post will state where the survivors are, what just happened and the actual address of their location. Posts like this will also state the reactions of zombies and/or the undead's actual action. An example would be a survivor blowing up a gas station. A post like this will be made where nearby zombies hear the explosion, see the light and the movement and come running in their masses to investigate.
