I'm a little late to the discussion, but would a shield necessarily have to have special powers to deflect objects or magic? Unless your shield is made of paper, you should have a reasonable chance to block or deflect projectiles. Plus, mages have to cast their spells - you should have a decent shot at putting a stop to them before they have a chance to throw whatever they're planning at you.

Anyway, the whole idea of "IC time" is bull. My character(s) develop as I see fit.

Since I am from the mold where things fighting related (sports,wrestling, manga, anime, games) dictate my rp style and how I create my characters..

I find it perfectly acceptable. It isn't my place to question anyone else's character development.

If I had to use some little dueling sword, of course I'd have a dagger with it. I happen to have a real sword though.

Also- Epic is guy with sword or less beating all of the people with your attitude down. This is Gaia, they can see people throwing fireballs anywhere. =p

Actually, in RP most of her landed attacks have been with her shield. Sometimes people move into range or try to get around it, without thinking about the fact that its a big piece of metal. Shield-bashing people is really fun, because it generally opens them up for a good hit from the sword. Her style is an overhead chopping style, a sort of sword n' board wrist-flicking gig. It causes the weapon to snap a bit, and the end of the blade slashes faster then you might expect.

It's actually primarily used in line-fighting, but worked really well solo as well.

So as you can see, the shield is integral. She wears heavier armor (half-plate), so using a fencing style isn't an option. She isn't as much a dexterity/speedy fighter as much as she is powerful and durable.

The reflection thing is all about people who want to fire a fireball with their mind to melt a hole in your shield right away. It may seem like 'zomg she's cheap using an anti-magic shield' but, that's a pretty stupid argument. Obviously if she knows people will have magic/ranged powers she'll bring something to defend against it. That's the same reason she puts armor on and carries a shield, because people have pointy objects they want to stick her with.

I've just gotten into the habit of when people go on about how powerful they are, or what they need, blowing back at them how I'm doing the same thing as them with comparatively nothing, ever since I got into using the character without powers. Because the "more power" fad does tend to go too far.

And I need to hold up the "superiority of swords" thing while Dessi is away.
