I dunno if I'd want to hear it in a public place, if you're going out to lunch. I mean, I guess if it's going to go off calm and smooth, it wouldn't matter, but if there are going to be hurt feelings, he might not want to be out somewhere. At least that's how I'd approach it, but I'm a pretty shy and reserved person, I prefer to have personal talks like that behind closed doors.

I wouldn't do it in a public area like a restaurant.
You don't want him to feel embarrassed/insecure and give him no where to go if he needs to sort things out by himself.
(Public bathrooms are not good sit and think places.)
