What is the Avatar Arena?
http://www.gaiaonline.com/avatararena/
This is the Avatar Arena. Every week thousands of Gaians submit their avatars to be voted on by the rest of Gaia. Only ten of these entries can win.
Prizes are as follows:
1st place: 50,000 gold
2nd place: 30,000 gold
3rd place: 20,000 gold
4th to 10th place: 10,000 gold each.
How do I submit my avatar?
http://www.gaiaonline.com/avatararena/?mode=submit&key=56rgz6
It costs 1K (1000g) to enter, just follow the onscreen instructions.
But I want to submit my dream avatar I made on tektek/gavisim, how do I do that?
You can't.
I've just submitted my avatar but it hasn't shown up in the Arena
Your avatar is currently in the submission phase and will be voted on next week. Voting starts every Monday at 12 am (PST) and finishes on Sunday 7pm (PST).
For Europeans only - voting starts Monday 8 am GMT and finishes on the following Monday 3 am GMT.
I've entered my current avatar, can I change my outfit now?
Yes. Gaia takes a "snap shot" of your submission and saves it to a different location.
How much can I fit into the description box?
The description can be up to 1000 characters (characters include spaces). A good rule is if someone has to scroll through your description, it's probably too much for them to read.
How many characters can I use in the Title?
Twenty including spaces.
How many characters can I use in the Keywords
One hundred including spaces and commas. The Arena will automatically insert the items you are wearing as keywords. You must edit your submission to take them out if you don't want the items to show up as keywords.
How can I add an image to my keywords?
*** Please note that excessively large images are not allowed in the Arena and they must adhere to the ToS ***
I suggest you open Notepad to copy and paste the various stages:-
1. Have the URL of the image ready, if you are using photobucket, make sure you use the link labelled "Direct Link"
2. Go to a URL shortener site such as xrl.us,
tinyurl.com or urlcut.com. Shorten the URL of the image and copy the shortened URL.
3. Type the following into your keywords
<img src="IMAGE URL">
(don't forget to change IMAGE URL to the shortened version of your picture's URL).
Do not type in anything before you insert the code. If you add any text before you put in the code, it won't work. The picture will not appear until your entry is in the voting phase.
You will see
<img src=
in the key words when you save, this is what you should see. The picture will only appear once your avatar is in the voting phase.
If you edit your submission again after inserting the picture and saving, you'll need to re-type in the above.
If you are already being voted on, wait for a bit for the Arena to catch up with your edits.
Can I enter more than one outfit?
You can if you use a mule. You can't enter two or more outfits with the same account for the same week.
I've changed my mind and want to withdraw, How do I do that?
http://www.gaiaonline.com/avatararena/?mode=editEntry&key=56rgz6 and click the withdraw button at the bottom. If your entry is still in the submission phase, i.e. not being voted on, you will get your 1K back. If voting has started your 1K is not refundable.
I want to change my description/title/keywords, help?
http://www.gaiaonline.com/avatararena/?mode=editEntry&key=56rgz6. From there you can edit everything apart from your avatar.
I tried to submit but it said there was an error, what do I do?
First check to make sure that your entry really didn't go through by click the "edit my submission" link. If it did go through but your avatar isn't showing, withdraw and try again. If it didn't go through, just try again a little later on.
Voting has started and my entry shows up as a red X *cries*
Contact one of the Arena mods
http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewforum_moderators.php?f=154. They will withdraw your entry and refund your 1K. They cannot fix it for you so you'll have to re-enter the arena again next week.
NOTE: - If you are a red X and it is a site-wide glitch (as in everyone is a red-X), you are just going to have to wait for it to be fixed. It's happened before and will probably happen again. If it goes on too long, there may be an announcement at the top of this forum telling us that we can get a refund - wait for that to happen before withdrawing.
What will get me disqualified?
No avatars with major glitches are allowed. No nudies, no invisibles, baldies. A major glitch is generally something that would significantly affect the base model, or reveal something that was not meant to be seen. So n***s, balds and invisibles are not allowed, but minor glitches like "this shoe cuts off the pants by 2 pixels" are allowed. If we were to fix the glitch, the minor glitch would probably not be affected too much, whereas a major glitch would be affected greatly.
Though the system will not prevent you from submitting a glitched avatar, you will be disqualified if you are reported. Note that the higher your placing gets because of voting, the higher your chances are of getting reported since your visibility increases. So in short, submitting a glitched avatar not only makes you unable to win, you also waste 1000 gold doing it.
All accounts are allowed. I.e. secondary accounts are allowed too.
Avatars imitating copyrighted characters, e.g. an avatar that looks like Edward Elric from Full Metal Alchemist, will not be penalized for entering the competition. The reasoning behind this is that we are not enforcers of copyright. If the company/party holding the copyright actually comes forth to request us to remove the avatar from competing, then we will honor their request.
Offering gold, items or services to gain more votes and comments is not allowed. Asking/suggesting that other members to vote for your avatar in the arena is fine, however paying them to vote for you, or promising to do so, is not. - (written by omgwhat)

There has been recent debate as to exactly what and what is not allowed in relation to giveaways/contests that are linked to or associated with Arena Advertisements in the same post or thread.
This post is to clarify the rules and leave no room for debate or 'skirting' the rules by clever wording.
ANY contest that offers a prize, or ANY thread that offers possible financial gain to participants cannot operate in conjunction with an arena advertisement.
This means you cannot host any contest or offer prizes/gold and link to an Arena Advertisement within the same thread or ask for votes or comments on your entry. Any kind of financial gain, promised or actual, made in conjunction with requests for votes or comments is strictly forbidden in the Arena as it is usually a form of bribery, whether the prize is guaranteed or not.
Any users violating this rule will have their entry disqualified.
How does the spotlight work
We don't know and omgwhat (the developer in charge) won't tell us. It's basically random and is no indication of how well an avatar is doing.
Someone has copied my winning outfit, get them scream
Sorry but the mods can't do anything about it and neither can we. You can't "copyright" a winning avatar. Try to think of it a flattery and that you were the first to win with that particular combination. Making a topic about it won't help much and remember that linking is a no-no. It's a b***h though.
Having said that, if they copy your winning outfit AND description, you can report that.

Copying avatars is not against the rules but complete plagiarism of the description is.
