What is the Avatar Arena?

http://www.gaiaonline.com/avatararena/

This is the Avatar Arena. Every week thousands of Gaians submit their avatars to be voted on by the rest of Gaia. Only ten of these entries can win.
Prizes are as follows:
1st place: 50,000 gold
2nd place: 30,000 gold
3rd place: 20,000 gold

4th to 10th place: 10,000 gold each.

How do I submit my avatar?

http://www.gaiaonline.com/avatararena/?mode=submit&key=56rgz6

It costs 1K (1000g) to enter, just follow the onscreen instructions.

But I want to submit my dream avatar I made on tektek/gavisim, how do I do that?
You can't.

I've just submitted my avatar but it hasn't shown up in the Arena
Your avatar is currently in the submission phase and will be voted on next week. Voting starts every Monday at 12 am (PST) and finishes on Sunday 7pm (PST). For Europeans only - voting starts Monday 8 am GMT and finishes on the following Monday 3 am GMT.

I've entered my current avatar, can I change my outfit now?
Yes. Gaia takes a "snap shot" of your submission and saves it to a different location.

How much can I fit into the description box?
The description can be up to 1000 characters (characters include spaces). A good rule is if someone has to scroll through your description, it's probably too much for them to read.

How many characters can I use in the Title?
Twenty including spaces.

How many characters can I use in the Keywords
One hundred including spaces and commas. The Arena will automatically insert the items you are wearing as keywords. You must edit your submission to take them out if you don't want the items to show up as keywords.

How can I add an image to my keywords?

*** Please note that excessively large images are not allowed in the Arena and they must adhere to the ToS ***

I suggest you open Notepad to copy and paste the various stages:-

1. Have the URL of the image ready, if you are using photobucket, make sure you use the link labelled "Direct Link"
2. Go to a URL shortener site such as xrl.us, tinyurl.com or urlcut.com. Shorten the URL of the image and copy the shortened URL.
3. Type the following into your keywords

<img src="IMAGE URL">

(don't forget to change IMAGE URL to the shortened version of your picture's URL).
Do not type in anything before you insert the code. If you add any text before you put in the code, it won't work. The picture will not appear until your entry is in the voting phase.

You will see
<img src=

in the key words when you save, this is what you should see. The picture will only appear once your avatar is in the voting phase.

If you edit your submission again after inserting the picture and saving, you'll need to re-type in the above.

If you are already being voted on, wait for a bit for the Arena to catch up with your edits.
Can I enter more than one outfit?
You can if you use a mule. You can't enter two or more outfits with the same account for the same week.

I've changed my mind and want to withdraw, How do I do that?

http://www.gaiaonline.com/avatararena/?mode=editEntry&key=56rgz6 and click the withdraw button at the bottom. If your entry is still in the submission phase, i.e. not being voted on, you will get your 1K back. If voting has started your 1K is not refundable.

I want to change my description/title/keywords, help?

http://www.gaiaonline.com/avatararena/?mode=editEntry&key=56rgz6. From there you can edit everything apart from your avatar.

I tried to submit but it said there was an error, what do I do?
First check to make sure that your entry really didn't go through by click the "edit my submission" link. If it did go through but your avatar isn't showing, withdraw and try again. If it didn't go through, just try again a little later on.

Voting has started and my entry shows up as a red X *cries*
Contact one of the Arena mods http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewforum_moderators.php?f=154. They will withdraw your entry and refund your 1K. They cannot fix it for you so you'll have to re-enter the arena again next week.

NOTE: - If you are a red X and it is a site-wide glitch (as in everyone is a red-X), you are just going to have to wait for it to be fixed. It's happened before and will probably happen again. If it goes on too long, there may be an announcement at the top of this forum telling us that we can get a refund - wait for that to happen before withdrawing.

What will get me disqualified?

No avatars with major glitches are allowed. No nudies, no invisibles, baldies. A major glitch is generally something that would significantly affect the base model, or reveal something that was not meant to be seen. So n***s, balds and invisibles are not allowed, but minor glitches like "this shoe cuts off the pants by 2 pixels" are allowed. If we were to fix the glitch, the minor glitch would probably not be affected too much, whereas a major glitch would be affected greatly.
Though the system will not prevent you from submitting a glitched avatar, you will be disqualified if you are reported. Note that the higher your placing gets because of voting, the higher your chances are of getting reported since your visibility increases. So in short, submitting a glitched avatar not only makes you unable to win, you also waste 1000 gold doing it.
All accounts are allowed. I.e. secondary accounts are allowed too.
Avatars imitating copyrighted characters, e.g. an avatar that looks like Edward Elric from Full Metal Alchemist, will not be penalized for entering the competition. The reasoning behind this is that we are not enforcers of copyright. If the company/party holding the copyright actually comes forth to request us to remove the avatar from competing, then we will honor their request.
Offering gold, items or services to gain more votes and comments is not allowed. Asking/suggesting that other members to vote for your avatar in the arena is fine, however paying them to vote for you, or promising to do so, is not. - (written by omgwhat)

There has been recent debate as to exactly what and what is not allowed in relation to giveaways/contests that are linked to or associated with Arena Advertisements in the same post or thread.

This post is to clarify the rules and leave no room for debate or 'skirting' the rules by clever wording.

ANY contest that offers a prize, or ANY thread that offers possible financial gain to participants cannot operate in conjunction with an arena advertisement.

This means you cannot host any contest or offer prizes/gold and link to an Arena Advertisement within the same thread or ask for votes or comments on your entry. Any kind of financial gain, promised or actual, made in conjunction with requests for votes or comments is strictly forbidden in the Arena as it is usually a form of bribery, whether the prize is guaranteed or not.

Any users violating this rule will have their entry disqualified.

How does the spotlight work
We don't know and omgwhat (the developer in charge) won't tell us. It's basically random and is no indication of how well an avatar is doing.

Someone has copied my winning outfit, get them scream
Sorry but the mods can't do anything about it and neither can we. You can't "copyright" a winning avatar. Try to think of it a flattery and that you were the first to win with that particular combination. Making a topic about it won't help much and remember that linking is a no-no. It's a b***h though.

Having said that, if they copy your winning outfit AND description, you can report that.

`Link

Copying avatars is not against the rules but complete plagiarism of the description is.

All Bug reports go here.

The AvA forum is the place for discussing happenings in the Arena, last week’s winners, trends etc. It is not the place to show off your avatars, ask for votes, get rated or ask for outfit suggestions.

YAY I'm in the Arena, vote for me
This is not the place to ask others to vote for you. Make a thread in Chatterbox if you want more votes, add a banner/link to your signature just don't make a thread in this forum. Your topic will be moved if you make one and there is a chance that your entry will get low rates because of it - it's not worth it.

Don't go around asking for votes in the Avatar Arena forum - just don't do it.

Is my avatar Arena worthy?
These types of threads belong in Avatar Talk. STOP, we know you want to know if it's good enough for the Arena but all topics that ask for help with outfits or your entry in general belong in Avatar Talk not here. Your thread will be moved if you make one.

Can I ask for suggestions on my avatar?
No, not even a tektek or gavisim. See above.

Help! I need a description
Sorry but we cannot help you with that either - it's your avatar and only you know what inspired you.

OMG have you seen *insert name*’s avatar? *insert link* it’s awesome/horrible
Linking to submissions, whether to praise it or show how ugly it is, is not allowed in this forum.

Misplaced Threads
If you see a misplaced thread, just report it and don't reply to it, or you can PM a Moderator Assistant and ask them to move it.

If you've accidently posted a thread here, just report your own thread and ask for it to be moved to the appropriate forum.

How and where to advertise
You can make a thread in the Chatterbox asking people to rate your submission. Chatterbox is the only forum you are allowed make a thread to advertise in. Also, unless you are in the Chatterbox, you cannot add a link in your posts - this includes posting styles that link to your entry.

Check your guilds to see if you are allowed to make a thread advertising your submission. If you are unsure, PM the owner of the guild and check.

Don’t spam your friends via PM for votes, they can report you for it.

Signature adverts are the only form of advertising allowed in the forums, outside of the Chatterbox.

You can add a link to your entry in your profile.

Sig banners and how to make it clickable
Sig banners are allowed, it’s the best way to let people know you are in the Arena.

To make a clickable Banner use the following code:

[url=link to your entry][img]image url[/img][/url]

If you're unable to make your own banner, GAIA Gaming -> Mini Shops -> Personalized Graphics and someone there can make you a banner for a fee.

You can pay someone to place your clickable banner in their signature BUT
Don't offer gold, items or services for rates (see What will get me disqualified)

Don't forget that signatures must be no more than 500 pixels in both width and height. Total byte size of your image must be less that 100,000 bytes. Last thing you want is to have your signature disabled while you're in the Arena.

I Can't link my entry, the url keeps redirecting to other entries
The new profile system seems to have messed with direct linking. Instead of using the link provided by the Arena, use:

http://www.gaiaonline.com/gaiaarena/?postid=####

Replace the #### with your entry/post ID number.

You can find it in the url of your entry or by searching your name in the area.

(Thanks to Lady Rat for that information).

1 = So ugly it makes my eyes bleed
5 = Average
10 = Excellent, top ten worthy.

Feel free to use the numbers in between too.

Down voting, what is it?
Down voting is when someone purposely gives you a very low rate in order for you to lose your rank. Just because someone gives you a bad rate does not mean it's a down vote, it's just a bad rate.
There is a code in place that will mitigate down voting/low rates but that only kicks in after the contest has ended.

Do not downvote - it's very rude and certainly don't ask your friends to down vote potential winners. It is frowned upon and may warrant investigation by a moderator should you be found instigating mass down voting.

I can give myself a 10 and so can my mule!
You are allowed 4 rates per IP address but they must be from different accounts. It's drop in the ocean compared to the thousand odd rates that you get through the course of the week.

Please explain what Rank means?
Only avatars in the top 500 are ranked, 1 is the top rank and 500 the lowest. Zero means that your average score isn’t high enough to be ranked.

Average score?
Average score is calculated thus:
Total score / number of rates = average score.

Say you have 4 rates, 2 10s and 2 ones, your total score would be 22 so the sum would be:

22 / 4 = 5.5

5.5 would be your average rate.

It’s a little more complicated than that but that is the basic sum.

As stated in that little box that tells you what your rank is… don’t tell anyone until the contest is over. It is exciting to have a rank and even more so to be in the top ten but telling people will lead you to be down voted. Shhhh, keep quiet.

How can I add an image to one of my comments?
1. Have the URL of the image ready
2. Go to a URL shortener site such as xrl.us, tinyurl.com or urlcut.com. Shorten the URL of the image.
3. After that, go to the comment box and type in
<img src="IMAGE URL">
(don't forget to change IMAGE URL to the shortened version of your picture's URL).
Do not type in anything before you insert the code. If you add any text before you put in the code, it won't work.
(thanks to (D~K~D) for that) - not currently working

Woah, slow down! No one can type that fast! Please wait a bit and try again

The time limit is in place to reduce bot commenting. It similar to the voting time limit, although that was put into place to stop people who weren't looking at the Avatar but just click random number to gain gold more quickly.

Other important information
Comments are subject to the ToS just like everything else on Gaia. So if you get flamed in your comments you can report them to a moderator.

When submitting your avatar to the Arena you have the option of turning off your comments and you can also turn them off during the contest by editing your submission.

You can also delete individual comments if you want to.

Remember to be respectful when commenting on other people’s entries. Everyone is entitled to enter the Arena as long as they follow the rules and have the 1k entry fee. Flaming will get you reported, earn you a warning or a ban.

Bots and their comments/rates
Be warned, as bot comments are now more and more frequent, using a generic comment on all the submissions you rate, will probably result in your account being reported as a spam bot. Try and keep comments relevant to the avatar you are commenting on.

If you are getting bot comments, please note down the name of the bot and user number before deleting then send a list of these names to one of the Arena Mods so they can ban them.

Known Arena Problems

Taken from this thread

Quote:
This is a warning and awareness thread, since a good number of you never go anywhere else around Gaia to see what's going on.
Hackers have been getting into accounts using a link to a password stealing website.
Lately, to try to get us in here, the link has been spread through PMs, disguised as a request for an AvA vote.
When you click the link, you're brought to Gaia's "homepage", as if you were signed out.
If you see this happen, don't try to sign back in. It's fake.
Typing your username and password into the log-in is what gives them your info.

To prevent getting even that far, just take these precautionary steps:
• DO NOT CLICK ANY LINK without hovering over it first to check its origin.
• Report the PM or post you see containing the link if you find "ripway.com" anywhere in the link.
• Try to warn your other friends once you receive the link, just in case they might be fooled.

If you click a link that takes you to a login page - Do Not Sign in. Even if that link has come from a friend, they may have been pished already

Also, if you do click the link - make sure that you run a virus scan to ensure that you haven't inadvertently caught a virus or key logger.

10/26/07 - Gaia has started to block some of these phishing sites. Still be careful what link you click, hover over the link and make sure it goes where it says it does.

****

Currently direct linking isn't working correctly, please see the section on Advertising on how to workaround this problem.

****

The Arena is taking a while to catch up with any edits you make to your entry. Keep hard refreshing (ctrl + F5) every so often.

The Arena is also lagging slightly, it might take a while for new comments and rates to show up.
