I'm not in summer school. My 11th Lit' teacher handed me paper with writing on it for AP Lit next year. So now, I'm working on the 'work'

1. The Iliad / Homer / Penguin Books USA Inc. / 1990


2. Achilles- murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses.

Apollo-Phoebus Apollo. Storming at heart with his bow and hooded quiver slung over his shoulders.

King Agamemnon- Furious, eyes searing like fire.

Athena- Pallas Athena! Terrible blazing of those eyes.

3. At the beginning of the chapter, it talks about Achilles trying to rescue Chrysies
that Agamemnon holds. In order for Achilles to rescue her, he would have to pay a ransom for her. After Agamemnon broke his grip from Achilles, Achilles began to unsheathe his sword. After he drew his sword, Athena, the goddess of wisdom, came down. Athena came down to check on Achilles’ rage and that Hera cared for both Achilles and Agamemnon. After Achilles sheathed his sword, Athena soared home to Olympus. A little while later, Achilles prayed to his mother that he was given a short life and that Zeus should honor him. His mother came and asked why he was in tears. Achilles then explained everything that happened, beginning with the rescuing of Chrysies to him unsheathing his sword at Agamemnon.

Thetis, Achilles’ mother, asked why did she ever bear him. She then told him that she’d go to Olympus to pray to Zeus about honoring him. Thetis went up to Olympus to pray to Zeus for Achilles. At first, Zeus didn’t say anything but when Thetis prayed again, he said that Hera would disapprove of what he will say. Despite this, he bowed his head to say that he decreed with her. Hera found out about this and asked him why is he talking to other women besides her. He replied that she should obey his orders and do nothing more than that.

4. Why does Agamemnon want to keep the girl? 5. Athena told Achilles not to fight Agamemnon. Why do you think he did what Athena told him?
6. Why does Achilles pray to his mother? 7. Why do you think Thetis wants Achilles to stay where he is?
8. Why does Zeus not respond to Thetis when she prayed to him?
9. Why is Hera mad at Zeus?
10. What happened to Hephaestus when he tried to protect Hera from Zeus?


5. Her gray eyes clear, the goddess Athena answered, “Down from the skies I come to check your rage if only you will yield. The white-armed goddess Hera sped me down: she loves you both, she cares for you both alike. Stop this fighting, now. Don’t lay hand to sword. Lash him with threats of the price that he will face. And I tell you this- and I know it is the truth- one day glittering gifts will lie before you, three timed over to pay for all his outrage. Hold back now. Obey us both.”
6. When I was reading the chapter, it didn’t make sense to me at all. I didn’t know who Agamemnon or Calchas was. But after reading the chapter, I knew who both of them are. Reading part of the Iliad seemed boring because of how Achilles was weeping because Zeus didn’t honor him. Jeez, if I were him, I wouldn’t care if Zeus honored me or not. I would only care about my family and myself.

7. Sacrosanct- most sacred or holy.
