toto: hmmmm well generally I try to imagin the picture as a 3D object in my head and see where the body shape dips and rises to mark out shadow and highlight
then for colouring pick 3 tones (google for skin colour tutorials for great selections of skin tones and their shades/highlights) I block the whole thing in roughly with only the highlights and shades and then smooth it out with the mid tone after.
if your using photoshop then I would also create a new layer for each area of colour (skin, clothes, hair etc...) and then drag your line art above all of the layers and set its mode to 'multiply' this means you can colour the layers under it and you will be able to see the colour through your line art but your not drawing over the line art (which means neat outlines for everybody!)
If you are having a less general problem do you want to pm the image to me and I'll pm a reply with C+C?
