the hyperinflation (it's a >lot< faster than the normal inflation we had to deal with before) started about a year ago, with the introduction of the first gold generating cash shop items
got only worse over time as gaia started to introduce more of those GGs with higher payouts over time
the update to the DC was one of the attempts of gaia to repair what they have broken, as they have given non-cash, gold-poor users a bit of a better chance at earning MP-useful amounts of gold
same as the repeated kickstarter events (those things where they let you throw away gold for small personal compensations (little items, achievements, raffle-slots, ...) and more global rewards (more items for GoFusion, more stuff for events, ...)
and the incresed gold-sink character of the normal events (dunno how much you played the games/battled/healed in the matsuri)
they even took out the GGs for a week or so (don't remember exactly), which in cooperation with the then current goldsink took quite a chunk out of the overall gold flow
but they re-released GGs after that week...but apparently scaled down somewhat in their average payout (at least I think that...)
but at the very least the max payout got reduced (before the GG-break it got as worse as 1 trillion gold max)
