thank you both for the kind advice~

so... some thoughts on this. i joined this thinking it'd be fun and
i can improve my skills, and it has been fun! ...however, i
feel like i'm not doing much improvement :/ i feel like each day
i'm just struggling to make the deadline. and i haven't had the
time to go back and work on previous sketches. ...mainly
cause if i was to rework on sketches, i'd be redoing them
entirely since i'd have the chance to sit down and think about
composition, etc. that i didn't get to when i first made the
sketch.

tl;dr: i need advice on improvement because i can't seem
to focus on making any finished products at the pace of a
drawing a day D:

we do have days where one of the themes is to go back and finish an older piece or improve it. so you can always go back.

Personally i work a day ahead sometimes so i dont feel rushed by the deadlines >.>

shhh dont tell

as for improving... you just started. its only been 6 days XD
you gotta give it more time. ive done this a few years now and i can tell you day 90-100 art looks waaaaay better than day 1-10 art. its crazy seeing the differences you can get.
my suggestion would be to pick one thing you really want to improve. like your spped, coloring techniques, shading, or how you draw eyes. then focus all your drawing on improving that skill.
if you feel you master it, pick a new spot to work on.
right now my aim is to be faster so i focus on doing the best i can in certain time frames and also picking up new tricks to make things go smoother/quicker.

also, make an effort to pick themes that arent always your favorite. being forced to try something different can really help.
and the first themes especially as they are more technique/style based

my lips are sealed

i suppose my concern is that none of my work feels really finished, and
i guess i worry if any improvement will come out of half finished work ;v;"

that's a good idea, i suppose i'd like to work on anatomy or coloring
techniques, but the latter would be harder/more time consuming for me.
i just simply don't have the time of day to sketch out something, line it,
and color it... :c

i may attempt to pick themes that aren't my favorite... but usually when
i see a bunch of words together, i may start getting an idea of an image
and want to draw that =v=; so it gets hard to detach myself haha...

There are many ways to improve one's skill.
You may think that drawing daily doesn't seem like you're improving, but the fact that you're working on something is heading towards somewhere. It's kinda like losing weight without a scale. YOU don't see the improvements because that's your body and you have a much higher expectation, whereas people around you will see the improvements!

You don't jump from 300 pounds to your desired 100 pounds in a few months.
It takes time, and art is the same way.

The point of this event isn't to finish a piece (ignore those super-people who can finish a piece in a day XD). Every ten days, we will have "improve/finish a previous drawing from the event" -- hopefully that will help you go back to a previous a piece!

Each art you create, you learn something new. You're supposed to take that lesson and apply it to your next one. Maybe you got better with composition, instead of going back and just redraw it, try to improve your future ones~

Of course, there are many, many ways to improve. Some people feel better if they go back to a drawing, some rather push forward and leave the old art as is. It's really up to you how you want to go about it.

I generally just keep pushing forward. I've created what I've created with the maximum ability that I have at the present. I can only keep drawing and keep pushing forward~ and hope that I improve more and more each day~ ;D

When I have the time, I'll show you some of my work from before and then some work later. I went to school and had teachers harp on me, so that's where the majority of my improvements comes from -- someone pointing out my mistakes and then helping me learn how to fix them so that I can identify them myself when I'm creating my art in the future.

If you like help with anatomy or maybe you're having trouble with a pose or ANYTHING, feel free to ask for some mentoring!! We generally do not critique other people's pieces because everyone is at a different level and sometimes, they're not seeking for improvements. And we respect that. So if you ask for help, we will give it to you! heart

            Sorry for the long message xD;

i suppose, i have been expecting more improvement in one go. and i
would love to get critique on anatomy and such, tho i worry when i can
get back to modifying said images xD; like, i'd draw it, and ask for
critique, but worry i may never get around to going back to fixing and
incorporating said critique.

i guess i worry, even on the every ten days re-work on a piece, i won't
have the time to put in a good effort to making something i can be happy
with :<

No, I just haven't been online lately due to being super sedated with antibiotics and painkillers... this always happens during this event... lol 100 Days is jinxed for me.. so maybe if I finish it this year, it will break the curse. Today is the first day in three days I've been awake more than an hour at a time. :[

edit: so... if I submit all 6 days today before the deadline, I can still compete as a challenge artist though? how many "spirit passes" or whatever can I use?
I don't want to give up on this event, I feel like it's something to look forward to after all this hospital stuff is done with
Oh no! I'm sorry you haven't been feeling well. sad And I'm sorry we always jinx you!

Yes, we are still in our grace period until the deadline today (day 6) so if you post all your art by then, you can still be a Challenge artist. Remember, it can be sketches, paragraphs of text, photos, haikus, WIPs, it doesn't have to be finished pieces. You won't need any Spirit Passes for that.

Everyone currently has one Spirit Pass, as you get one a month just for participating. You can also earn them in Spirit Challenges, which we were planning to begin... next weekend. sweatdrop If you don't have the energy to put into a Spirit Challenge just then, you can still do one of the other themes and it counts for that day, although you don't get another Spirit Pass.

As for your hospital stuff, I want to work with you on that. Would you be able to do the pieces ahead of time if I PM you the themes? Again, it can be just sketches. That way you wouldn't need to use any Spirit Passes. 3nodding

This is the same kind of advice that professional writers give to aspiring writers. It doesn't matter the quality of the work so much as it does that you're doing the work to begin with. Paraphrasing this, quality isn't something that shows improvement so much as it is the direct result of regularly practicing your skill. The idea is simply to produce, not to focus on the final piece's quality.

I've read time and time again that a good goal to shoot for with writing is 1,000 words per day minimum, however long it takes. For digital writing, that translates to 3-4 pages of writing per day with a standard 12-point font (Times, Arial, Calibri, etc). Time and again, the people giving this advice also say that the content itself also doesn't matter. Not doing what you're really trying to get done? Pfft. As long as you're producing, it doesn't matter- it still helps you improve, and it still helps with creativity.

Unfortunately, I don't always do this; some days I write absolutely nothing. However, on the days that I do write, it's often fairly easy for me to put out 1,500-3,000 words at a time. I don't always work on what I'm really wanting to, either. Some days, I just don't have it in me to work on that one thing, and that's okay. Chances are, I'll be able to get back around to it in a day or two, and once I start, I can usually churn out a considerable amount. (Seriously- I sometimes put out a 3,000+ word short story in two days flat, complete with editing and revising.) The last story I published was done in a week, including taking three days to edit and revise.

tl;dr: Focus on producing, not on quality. Focusing on quality is far more likely to cause disappointment, and will make it more difficult to see when/where you actually improve.

I just want to eat you up and swallow you down

just wondering, for your pieces, do you pick up from the same story
or do you write new stories each time? i guess, the analogy for this
would be, would it be better to start a new art piece each time (as
i have been doing so currently right now), or keep returning to work
on one piece? granted, the latter is hard to do with different themes
each day.

I don't know if I have any place saying anything here, but I feel kinda the same, so I figured I'd give you my thoughts on it...
Improvement for art is a strange thing... I kinda compare it to leveling up in a game (except you can't see your progress bars). The higher your level the harder it is to get to the next level. xD For me personally I have to go back to art which is almost 3 years old to see any noticeable improvement. It can be kinda dis-encouraging when you're not improving. For me I find it is better to try to be happy with the piece I make as it is and don't think about wether I have improved or not. Because as slow as it may be, you can only improve if you keep drawing! And then once in a while you can look back at really old art (like 3 years old, or 10 years old for that matter) and you'll see that there has been improvement! If you really want to focus on improvement in this event though it's probably a good idea to just pick one thing you want to improve on. :3

Personally I am just focusing on creating some more original art that I can truly feel is my own because I almost only draw other people's characters and such. So it's more about the general ideas so I don't care if it looks very polished or finished. But that's just me. :3

However, I do get what you mean by the deadlines if you're trying to be a challenge artist! I guess if you want to improve your speed it's a good way to practice that? If you're not aiming to be a challenge artist there are no rules which state you can't just work on a piece you already started instead of doing the daily piece?

Sorry for all the text, I hope there was something useful for you to know. :3 Your art looks really good btw!

i think, looking back on my art, i've improved every year until recently...
recently, i haven't been taking any sort of art class and have been
unable to find time to draw thanks to work. (i used to doodle in all my
notes at least :/ )

i am hoping to be a challenge artist since... well... maybe i'll improve
more under pressure?? actually, now that i think about it, i'm not sure
why i'm following challenge artist other than to see if i can do it?

not at all~ your advice is very valued, and your art looks gorgeous,
too! i particularly liked the piece you submitted today :3 the color
balance between blue and orange is so good!

I can do that, yes. I'm not always able to actively check Gaia these days, but I will do my best!
Can some of the photos be taken before this event began? My fishy passed away last week and he might not be a koi, but I wanted to use his photo for memories and to memorialize him a bit.

oh! EDIT:
can I possibly have an hour extension on the deadline for submitting today?
my tablet/overnight bag is being brought to me but they're 2 hours away from where I am currently. I only need 1 hour more. >w<

If I am currently signed up as a casual artist, but wish to attempt as a challenge artist do I need to send a PM to someone, or just continue making art?
Sorry I just wanna make sure I understand.

as far as I remember, everyone is a 'challenge artist' when the event starts, whether you wanted to be casual or challenge. Then if you miss a day, you're moved to 'casual'
so you should already be a challenge artist unless you missed a day already, and should stay a challenge artist as long as you keep getting in on time

Most of the time, I work until a story is done. Some of them are part of a larger narrative that I'm working on; in these cases, what I write is essentially different chapters from the same book, but they can still technically be considered different pieces. For what I write day-to-day, though, it's usually going back to the same piece until I get it finished.

However, something like this art challenge is a bit different. Sometimes, you may find a theme that matches something you've already done for it, or gives you an idea for a new way to approach it. Most of the time, though, it'll probably be easier to start a new piece than continue a previous one.
