"Wait, what? I thought you were the guard!" she spoke to the supposed guard-woman with a confused look on her face, the turned to scrutinize the man.

"Unless creepy old guys get to make all the rules in this place, anyway."

She crouched over to talk to the crying girl.

"Don't worry" she spoke to her, placing a hand on her shoulder and smiling.

"i'm sure we'll figure something out. Whoever's at fault here, some old guy antagonizing kids isn't cool in my book."

She turned about sharply and stared the man with a stern scowl on her face, then to the noble looking lady...

"Even if it means going into some stupid arena or whatever-" her words stopped short as she remembered.

"Uhm... except that I lost my sword... i'm sure it's around here someplace."

Danique felt herself torn between wanting to join in with the dark haired girl, and by urging her to listen to her. But it would be suicide to go... Danique placed her hand on the girl's arm and drew her back with a look of urgent caution.

"Your sword won't help you against the Contraption. It is not a normal beast of flesh and blood. Clockwork and large as a Dragon, I've not been here long but I've seen it slay full units of armored men with ease. It does not stop... and it cannot be killed."
"The law, hmm," Rebecca said quietly, almost under her breath, then looked more closely at Danique. "From what platform does this...Justice set the laws? What kind of basis does the power derive from? Democracy, historic or power...or something else?"

The strange woman with the bob spoke then and she looked at her instead.

"I was a guard, on my own world," she explained with a scowl. "One of the best." There was no ego in her tone; she stated it as fact, as certainty.

User Image"A - a dragon?" Zoe paused, her cool exterior obviously disturbed. "Seriously?"

"Wait, do you mean 'like a dragon' or just 'a Dragon'?"

Zoe was no stranger when it came to dragons. She actually knew many of them very well. She knew them well enough to know she was no match for one, no matter how bad-a** she thought she was. If this thing was anything like a dragon...

Her thought process was halted again by another sob from the little girl. She imagined briefly of what she must be going through. She'd been in that place before, and if Zoe could ease her pain in any way, that's what she was going to do. She wouldn't let her down.

Her luck rarely failed her in the past... or at least that's what she convinced herself to believe.

"They probably have extra swords hanging out at the arena, right? I need a pretty big one." She smiled.
"Yes, the law..." Blakely spoke solemnly, but not bothering to lower his voice. "Basically, the Justice recieves petitions from accusers of a crime from the mightly and powerful. With his wisdom, and the guidance of the Tribune - thats a constellation by the way, which he is said to speak with," Blakely intoned flatly with a raised eyebrow to show what he thought of that nonsense, "He decides a man's guilt. Its not often that the Contraption is brought in to decide the matter, but I guess with the right argument in a petition... well, anything can be bought for a price. Politics".

Blakely had to fight hard not to smirk at Danique's suspicious glare, "My my, looks like the little dragonette's not so fearsome with her claws clipped. And here I thought you'd be leading the charge. Guess whatever you have got going on is more important than helping anyone in need, eh? Hell, I might even like the new you."

Danique's temper flared at Blakely's words but she refused to let the man bait her. Turning back to the girl with the bob cut... a large sword? The girl was serious. "Wait... did you not hear me? The Contraption cannot be killed or stopped... Don't throw your life away recklessly."

"Oh for shame, now we have you trying to turn the girl's only friend away from helping her! Although I couldn't agree more with you, the boy definitely has one dead and messy end in sight," Blakely interjected with a laugh. The young girl began to shake and sob again at Blakely's remarks.

"I did not say we were not going to help... but fighting the Contraption is not the way." But what could they do... an audience with Lord Corvoran would be impossible, the man was an infernal fiend with little interest in the commons, and the Justice... it would take forever to gain an audience. Danique began to think, while at the same time trying not to let Blakely's remarks get to her. She did not have time for this.... if she stopped to help every single person... Dezrek was waiting, there were people waiting for her, who needed her just as much.

User Image"Dude!" Zoe exclaimed, incredulous at the man's words directed at the poor girl"what the hell is your problem? Don't you know how to act like a normal person?"

She then turned to the noblewoman, "Ok, so it's undefeatable... is that a fact, or has just no one defeated it before?"

Zoe was worried. Her mind was racing a mile a second, thinking of what to do. Being a hero is all good and true and everything, but was she really throwing herself to her death here? Her eyes passed over the guardswoman again.

"Well..." she spoke, clearing her throat briefly, "since you're one of the best... what chance do you think you have against this contraptio-majiggy-"

"Wait, did you say 'best from your own world'? What the heck does that mean?"
Rebecca gave an audiable sigh. This was not her forte at all. She was beginning to regret becoming involved in the first place, now she had to decide were to lay her loyalty - at least for the time being - and none of these people here seemed at all a worthy candidate. Fighting the law? The dark haired woman was utterly insane, the noble lady...seemed uncertain, unsure, and so Rebecca was unsure as well as to her potential to lead, and as for the man who had spoke about the laws well, he looked like a criminal if ever she had seen one. His knowledge of the law was very likely first hand.

"Hmm," she said again, turning back to the girl who had started the subject of this situation. "The truth is who are any of us to challenge law and order of this place? The best thing you can do, young lady, is to pick yourself up and carry on. What happens to your brother is...out of your hands." Unless these foolish people present here decided to try something, but she personally couldn't help but consider it would be the most ridiculous action.

"I really have no idea," she added to the insane woman. "Since I have no idea what the 'contraption' is, except that it may not be of flesh but everything has a weakness; everything can be destroyed if you try hard enough." She declined to answer her second point; it was really irrelevent and she didn't care for idle conversation with mad people.

"I'm not the one with the problem here... and oh, it cannot be killed so far as anyone knows -at least not by a normal man," Blakely emphasized the word while openly staring Zoe up and down with a quizzical expression, "but what the little dragonette here has not bothered to mention is this: Its not expected that you will kill it if you end up in the arena. Just surviving is enough. See, the Contraption was fitted with a windup device, thats how it was tamed. Before the fight, they wind it up to a set time, depending on how heinous the accusations are. The defender just needs to live until times up, so to speak."

"He was given the lowest setting - three minutes... oh please help me! I know if even one person defends him, it will give him a chance to live!" The young girl looks to Zoe with her eyes shining with hope and tears.

Danique finally allowed herself to be drawn in by Blakely's machinations. "So this is what you do for fun? Rile people up enough to get them killed?" She was glaring, but his bland look of disinterest was all she received in reply, and then amazingly, he nodded.

"She's right.... it might be better to try another tactic. Perhaps I can offer a solution... it just so happens my ... lady friend... is an acquaintance of Lord Corvoran".

The sudden cry to attack startled a few people before they realized it was just some children playing nearby, oblivious and carefree.
User Image"Carry on?!? Oh, come on! And you call yourself a guard? Ex-guard? Whatever!" Zoe exclaimed, exasperated.

She took a deep breath and cleared her thoughts, her expression becoming more serious. She wished her dragon was here. His absence truly worried her. She couldn't feel his presence at all. She could still feel her link with him, but it seemed to be disconnected, desperately searching for him. She would have to do this alone, but if she failed... then he would be all alone. Everyone knows what happens to a dragon when their rider dies...

"it's fine, whatever" she finally sighed out. "We don't even know if more than one person can fight this stupid thing anyway, so I guess I'll fight it alone."

She paused again, seemingly caught up in thought, then continued, "There has to be a reason that the arena is there, right? Why would you even be able to fight the thing if it was pointless? Besides, I'm in the right here. I don't know for sure, but... I can feel that it's the right thing to do."

She turned back to glance at the young girl, smiling widely.

"...and that contraption's never faced the wrath of Zoe Katernon before. He's got a big surprise coming."
Narrowing her eyes ever so slightly, Rebecca glanced away from the girl who now seemed utterly hell bent on finding someone stupid enough to help her unfortunate criminal brother, to the man. She knew manipulation and power-play when she saw it, she was around it often enough if not a participant, and felt her eyes roll of their own accord; she thought that he reminded her of someone she knew, although she couldn't think who it was right now.

She managed to refrain from remarking upon their collective insanity and stayed silent for the moment, waiting to see what would happen next.

Shaking her head with a grimace, Danique turned away from Blakely. "I should have known the instance you appeared that you would have some solution. Of course. What kind of fool do you take me for? I have said it enough times, we will never fight on the same side. And any help you have to offer, the prices are too high, not to mention that I'd have to live with the knowledge that I accepted it!" Spots of color appeared in her cheeks, giving away that she was losing to her fury.

Blakely kept smiling with his bland look of disinterest. Of course she refused... but she would have no choice once all her attempts to save not one, but now two people from their dooms failed. So he said nothing for now, silently thanking the Gods for stupid people like this Zoe Katernon.

Danique knew that the woman named Rebecca Portan was right.... Zoe was going to get herself killed. She had to try to stop this. She opened her mouth to say something, but couldn't think of anything. It was true, there were those who survived the Contraption... but she would not say that now. It would serve no purpose. She had time yet, the Zenith was days off still.

"Oh thank you!! Thank you!!!" The young girl babbled. "My brother.... he's all I have left! I knew you would help me."

"Well, the trial is some days off... perhaps we should get you cleaned up and back to your family. And maybe we could... share dinner perhaps." It would be good to get as many details as possible about the trial, in a less confrontational settings. She tried to include everyone... especially Zoe. There was time to think of a new plan. No matter how hard she tried it seemed that there was always some problem to attend to, someone to help... would she ever get home? She felt selfish and ashamed for thinking it, for feeling so childish. But there was no denying it to herself.

Coughing laughter could be heard coming from the old man as he shuffled away. And Blakely was gone when she turned to look for him. Just as well.
