Lamia's spine stiffened as the girl broke eye contact and took another step forward, but relaxed slightly when she caught the demon's attention and he bent down to talk with her, but only slightly. Lamia did not know a single demon that shouldn't be treated with caution, and only one that she would allow a child to talk to; even then, it would be a supervised chat with a firm discussion detailing the evils of contract law beforehand.

Still, she took this opportunity to glance about for the snake she thought she had seen earlier, but was disappointed when she realized it was the man's tail. Her disappointment was short-lived however, as in the lull of conversation, she realized her face was becoming uncomfortably warm.

"No no no no no no no noooooooo....." Lamia thought in a mild panic. Feeling the familiar knot of terror rising unbidden from her core, she only just barely stopped herself from tearing off the mask with her bare hands. She hadn't done as good of a job as Meilin had when she put her mask back on, and she guessed she wouldn't have very long before the burning started. "Don't panic, Lamia. Just calmly take the mask off. Give your face some air. Do not panic." She manually took a deep breath of air and slowly let it out, calming herself before she carefully slid her mask off.

Grinning, Pahkakino lifted his wings slightly higher to hide his actions from those passing by. Lifting his mask off, he looked back at the child, "I have white eyes because I have rebelled against my nature and my race. I am what others of my kind would call a 'good' demon. I have forsaken the ways of blood-shed and conquest, my white mark," he pointed with one clawed finger at his eyes.

When Lamia moved, he looked up, "Tired of such beauty already?" he smiled, lowering his wings, as he put his mask back on. "If your employer will take the coin I have, I would like to buy that one. It reminds me of...my home." Truth be told he wanted to say his family, but to bring up those memories, after being parted from them, would not do well for his composure.

"What is your name?" He watched the little girl, though his eyes did flick to Lamia as she shifted, respectfully keeping out of the thoughts.
'Yes, I think I shall keep my mind to myself for a while. If anything smells or feels weird...' a cautionary voice in the back of his head whispered dangerous...'Then I shall use it.'

Jesus, Amelia, you've freaked her out... The Captain sighed inwardly at herself as the girl panicked. And this is why you'll never make a good mother. Connor had always encouraged her to be more open and soft, but years of her life-risking made her deal with things efficiently. If she ever got home, she swore she'd change her ways.

But there was something in how the girl covered it up that reminded Amelia of herself.

Nevertheless, she nodded in a solemn response to what the girl had said, stood and held a hand out for her to hold, if she so chose. She carried her belt with her rapier and steamlock in her other arm, feeling it might be inappropriate to strap it on as though she were preparing for combat in such a festive atmosphere.

"Steal? Well, let's hope it won't come to that - I didn't have to pay for mine, and with a cute hat like yours, I'm sure someone's bound to simply buy you a mask." Amelia smiled down at the girl, her murky-teal eyes soft through the mask - the angle of her head and the Bauta's outwardly bent bottom making the hint of a smile visible. "Just smile and admire the pretty ones - maybe someone has an extra for you."

And here you go, teaching the girl tricks you learned as a whore on the streets of England. Amelia smiled through her inner self-chiding. Internally, she kicked herself - outwardly, nothing.

The Captain laughed softly at the little one's hopes of returning home - it was a full-hearted laugh in admiration of the girl's tenacity.
"You're right, of course. I'm sure there's a way home."

I pray there is, little one... Victoria needs... No... I need her. The Captain veiled her concern and her loss behind her easy smile and silver tongue. Her needs to get home could not be solved at the moment, however. But there was something that had her immediate curiosity. What's making this child lie through her teeth as I do? Everything's not fine, anyone can see... But she insists so strongly...

And in this sense, Amelia was a hypocrite - for her, it was well within her rights to veil her troubles beneath a strong exterior, but if she saw one who did that themselves, she became determined to find the answer to the question 'truthfully, what's wrong?'. But now, though it had her attention, was not the time nor place.

Smile, Amelia. Masquerade. She reminded herself and winked at the girl as she waited, hand out-stretched.

"I'm Amelia, by the way. Captain Amelia of the Eboreus. What's your name?"
