I mix and match vowel sounds too. biggrin Because I have studied language some as well. 3nodding I think that's cool that you build everything up first before naming a character. I generally do that with places, but I always come up with names for characters first. Because of that I have changed the names of most of my characters many times over the years. xd

@ Thread: What inspires you when trying to come up with names for your characters, your cities, your world regions and nations, and all other unique elements in your stories?
Hmm.....Probably my dreams and all the things I read or come up with.
It's very hard to come up with names. Especially names for characters.

As Lias spoke in that tone of his it started to grate on Astra, something that only showed in how her left eyebrow twitched slightly. Learn to address him in what way? What an a**. What kind of mountain did he think he was siting on? The questions Devaena were asking were interesting and well worded. Astra stayed where she was, closer to the female than the male, as she listened to the conversation quietly. Until he said he was a demon. She couldn't help but a small cough of a laugh. A singular, slightly nasal punctuation to break up what he was saying slightly. Then the way he said 'measly' made her shoulders move a little. She bit her lip and tried to chide herself into taking him seriously. It was hard for her. So hard. She found the dumbest things funny and his pomp was coming off that way to her.

Then she saw an official looking ship... and it wasn't in the water of any kind, it was in the air! She stared at it critically, not sure what it was and therefore not liking it be default. Astra hated not knowing things exactly how they were. Though she was able to quickly discern what its function was she couldn't see how it worked. Astra only wasted one moment sizing it up. In the end the ship didn't matter. it was all the soldiers on it that she had to worry about.

She shook her head when he said they were together. "As she said we three are strangers. He is the one who has been attacking the buildings." For not apparent reason. She was tempted to directly ask him where they were and what was going on, but she felt it was wiser to sit back and let others ask the questions. The woman she was with asked excellent questions, and not too many all at once. Devaena understood the value of information.

Generally speaking, for names, I scour baby name lists and lists of surnames, and then make a compilation of portions of two or three names until it sounds good and seems to fit the character.

As for cities and such, I just put sounds together. Honestly, I struggle with these the most.

Inspiration for the settings and circumstances of my world(s) comes primarily from my favorite aspects of stories I've read, different scientific texts, and my own pool of knowledge from years of public ... >.>

I call it fantasy, but I suppose my ideas are more along science fiction genre. OuO

I don't think about it too much, just use what comes to me. And for the most part characters tell me their names.

Heh, if I changed the names of my characters, I would confuse myself too much! For me names usually stick: once I've named them, they're not gonna change!

Good point! My characters pick their names a lot, too! (Maybe that's why place names are harder for me; I don't have anyone to tell them to me!)

Dedicated Stalker

I usually just make up random words. Just type in letters and see if they look right together. With the exception of Akai whom I named after a plant, every other thing I create has the randomest names.

I think it's easier for a character to tell you their name because you have already developed them and know there personality. I imagine that the same would be true for a place if you also created it's placement, features, and 'personality' as well, if that makes scene.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I think that would make a much more real or life like place to live. To treat it as you do a person and give it personality. The personality would probably still come from whatever it is that lives there, but I've just never thought of it that way before. thanks guys. biggrin
