Hello hello and welcome to my first ever (running all by myself) art contest! I'm Sweet Cadbury, a Gaian of 4+ years... so I decided to put some of my accumulated stuff to good use by holding an OC art contest! Rules and FAQ

Rules

1. Any one entry can only receive one prize, unless otherwise noted within the parameters for a special prize.
2. I reserve the right to extend the deadline if I have not received adequate entries by the end of the contest, determined by my own discretion. If I am forced to cancel the contest due to severe lack of entries, everyone who has entered WILL be compensated generously, but I cannot in good conscience give out such large prizes for a severely underrepresented contest.
3. Please use the form provided and post it in the thread, or your entry might get lost! If several posts from me go by and I don’t acknowledge your entry, send me a PM and gently poke me, in case I somehow overlooked it.
4. There are no limit to the number of entries put into the contest, but be advised- quality will always trump quantity.
5. Black and white, traditional, CGI mediums are all welcomed~ just realize that the black and white works will be judged along side the colored works. That doesn't mean that I necessarily FAVOR color over black and white.. it just means that a picture that looks unfinished is going to pale next to something more polished.
6. Pictures that obviously had no effort behind them will not be considered in the contest. Only Clear efforts on good white paper that are scanned decently-- if the pic is cropped badly, scanned crookedly, on lined paper, whatever- then it will be rejected. (if you have an extenuating circumstance for your WIP, just let me know- WIPS will be accepted no matter what they look like, but art submitted as final versions that are sloppy or have something glaringly wrong with them will be disqualified)
7. No stealing other people's art and saying it's yours! You will be reported and disqualified
8. Follow Gaia Rules, obviously!
9. Be Nice. No griping. No trouble making. We’re here for fun!
10. By entering this contest you allow me, Sweet Cadbury, to use your artwork for any website I choose to build. I will not sell, edit (other than cutting parts off for banners) or claim your artwork as my own.

Story

This contest is centered around a few of the OC's from Four Saga, a story concept I've been developing since my freshman year of college- so, for the last 7-8 years or so. It is a series of four interlocking stories following four different girls from neighboring countries that are brought together at the end of their respective stories by a threat to their entire world.

(You don't HAVE to read all this attached info, but it may help you get a better understanding of the characters and their world)

After a great war between the animal gods, the land was split into four countries: Hope, Honor, Pious, and Verity, lying in the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western corners of the Great Sea, respectively. The animal gods separated themselves into four corners of the sky as well, and watched over their people in the respective counties: The Wind Tortoise in the North, the Firebird in the South, the Water Dragon in the East, and the Sand Cat in the West. There was also a fifth tribe, and a fifth god… those who worshipped Man as their god were banished to Exile, the land that lies off the edge of the earth… Shunned for years by those who lived in the countries on the Great Sea, the land of Exile drew away from the other four countries so much that it became but a legend, as did the true origins of the Great Sea countries. Now, however, the Exilians are beginning to show themselves again, and they wish to release their god who was built them in his own image, the God of Man, sealed away by the followers of the four animal gods.

This contest focuses on the heroines (and their love interests) of the first two Four Saga chapters: Honor Saga and Hope Saga.

Basic Premise of Four Saga Book 1: Honor Saga

During the Festival of the Firebird, a yearly celebration in Honor, the Honor School of Magic, which Cadi lives at and attends, is attacked by a small but elite group, lead by a powerful Dark Knight of Exile named Saber. When Cadi shouts at the soldiers in Exilian tongue, their leader decides to take her back to their land along with the object they came for, the Book of the Firebird. Once in Exile, Cadi learns many secrets about her past and also about the terrible plans the Exilian government has for the future of her country, but also finds friendship and love in her struggles to save Honor and eventually the rest of the world.

More random info:
The Southern land of Honor is a country of craftsmen, artisans, and merchants. Honorians are known for being the most open to the other nations (insofar as they’re interested in making money off of them, anyway). If you find a foreigner in Hope, Pious, or Verity, odds are it’s an Honorian trying to sell something. Because the earlier people of Honor were mainly blacksmiths and other artisans, Fire is the most upheld element in Honor, and it comes to no surprise that the Firebird is the guardian deity of Honor. The borders of Honor are guarded by both the Honor Guard and by graduates of the Honor School of Magic. Honorian mages are well known for their powerful defensive and offensive magics, and most mercenary mages hale from Honor.

God of Honor, the Firebird: To the Honorians, the Firebird represents ingenuity, perseverance and passion. It mostly resembles a peacock, but is known to have very powerful wings and a sharp raptor’s beak and talons.

The lost land of Exile lays off of the edge of the world, literally. It is the land beyond all lands, skies and seas. Exile is considered to be a myth by most people—only the highest levels of scholars and mages know the truth of Exile’s existence. Knowledge of any physical way to reach Exile is long lost, however. Only the Dark Knights of Exile hold the ability to travel between the worlds. Set so apart from the other countries that had once been it’s neighbor, Exile has evolved into a very different place- a place of technology rather than magic. It’s people (the general populace sees the “Outer Lands” as much of a myth as the citizens of the four countries see Exile) are an amalgamation of all varieties of interests and professions, but their lives are tightly managed by their government.

God of Exile, the God of Man: Exilians worship a nameless deity who is human in form. Their god encourages loyalty and obedience to the government and faith in human ingenuity and technology.


Basic Premise of Four Saga Book 2: Hope Saga

When a tragic incident leaves a Seneca, bright and promising student of the Hope School of Magic traumatized, she is sent home for some R&R accompanied by her lady in waiting and a pair of gallant knights. On their journey they are harrassed much more than they had expected by monsters and undead creatures, some of which were thought to be mere creatures of legend. Eventually they are forced to detour off the main road and are sidetracked from reaching Seneca's home. Unbeknownst to Seneca, the creatures plaguing her on the road work for a powerful man who wishes to have her and her ability to accurately predict the future under his control. With Oran, an elvish knight, and a handful of stalwart friends, Seneca first tries to escape the clutches of her enemy, and then finds herself caught in a web of intrigue that spans beyond Hope's borders into the other lands of the continenta and even into Exile.

The Northern land of Hope is the nation of scholars. The Hopish have a great library in almost every city, containing careful records and volumes of history. How much knowledge is truly contained in the Archives of Hope is not known by outsiders or even most of the populace of Hope. They have only a small army, but their even smaller group of knights, the Knights of Hope, are known throughout the four kingdoms for their strength and purity of will. They have almost a legendary status. The Hopish look to the Wind Tortoise as their protector and provider of knowledge, and look upon Air as the most important of the four basic elements. Students of the Hope School of Magic study Clairvoyance and other Air-based magic, and are famous for turning out sorcerers who can scry into the future and read minds.

God of Hope, the Wind Tortoise: While it may seem odd that a kingdom of air-affinities would honor a Tortoise, the Wind Tortoise is regarded as a keeper of knowledge- it is said that he studied the laws of the universe and natural science until he found a way to control the winds and grant himself the ability to fly. For birds and other creatures of the sky, flight is a natural gift, but the Wind Tortoise earned flight through his own efforts and it is in that vein that the Hopish wish to model themselves—though earthbound, they wish to set at least their spirits aloft through knowledge. The Wind Tortoise resembles an ordinary tortoise, but is always seen in a wreath of cloud-like energy that resembles a large pair of wings.

Cadi’s Grandfather was Headmaster of the Honor School of Magic. Raised as an orphan by him, she has been taught the arts of the Honor School of Magic from a very young age, as well as been trained in her natural ability of Firestarting (a common Honorian ability). All her life, one great secret of her past has been kept from her: That her father was an Exilian, and she was in fact born in Exile. When a band of soldiers in black armor, lead by a masked Dark Knight bearing the Crest of Exile approaches her school one day, demanding that they turn over the Book of the Firebird, her life was forever changed.

Saber/Gabriel Desmoan
Sex: Male
Age: 19
The Dark Knight of Exile. Saber is not his real name; only the master he serves knows what that is, for to know the name of a Dark Knight is to have power over him. As a Dark Knight, he has the power to travel between Exile and the “Outer” world. It is he who leads the attack squad on the Honor School of Magic, and brings Cadi kicking and screaming back to his master in Exile. Later, Cadi inadvertantly frees him from the spell of service that binds him to his master, and he sheds his mask and escapes Exile with her. He is extremely adept in the use of swords. As Saber, he is a silent and efficient servant of his master- as Gabriel, he is Cadi's fierce protector.

Seneca’s days at the Hope School of Magic were more serious than most of her classmates, for she was the next in line to be the Seer of Hope… the one in charge of the Crystal Mirror, and its ability to tell the future. After a disastrous attempt to use the mirror during the Aurorian, her mentor is killed and Seneca is so badly shaken she is sent home to recover. A week later, the Hope School was up in flames, and the mirror had disappeared…

Sir Oran’Ethilath (Oran)
Sex: Male
Age: Unknown, appears in mid 20's (he's an elf, after all!)
Oran is a wood elf, who for reasons of his own decided to leave his Elven village and live among Men in Prospectus, the capital of Hope. There he became one of the revered Knights of Hope. It is his job to escort Seneca home when she is sent away from school for a rest, but they never make it that far. When unexpected problems on the journey force them to take refuge in an elven village, Oran must confront his past, while becoming deeply entangled in Seneca's present problems and the threats to the future.

Couple Dynamics

Cadi & Saber/Gabriel

Even though Saber begins as Cadi's captor in the story (and therefore, she is NOT his biggest fan), he never harms her and protects her, even to the point of killing one of his own men who tries to assault her against his orders. Despite the fact that Cadi is extremely and understandably put out (to say the least) about the circumstances surrounding their meeting, once they reach Exile and Cadi spends long days locked up in a room alone, she finds the Dark Knight on her mind a lot for some reason. When the President of Exile, Saber's master, tries to murder Cadi, the act of her blood spilling causes an unexplained reaction. Through a vision of the Firebird Cadi gains the secret to Saber's Gaes and speaks Gabriel's true name, freeing him. He kills his former master and they escape together, though their story is far from over. As they try to make their way through unhospitable lands to try to get back to Honor, Gabriel struggles with experiences for the first time as a young adult, and he and Cadi find themselves deeply bound together. It is not a relationship Cadi is 100% easy with- they bounce instantly from enemies to lovers, but they cannot seem to fathom leaving one another, even while they struggle to somehow learn to be friends with each other as well.

Nitpicky details: After leaving Exile, Cadi discovers that her eyes have turned blue- so any pics of Cadi and Gabriel together, Cadi's eyes should be blue. I won't disqualify you or anything if her eyes are still brown, but attention to detail is nice. wink

Brief Story excerpt:

Her rational thoughts were cast away as Gabriel closed the distance between their faces, covering her lips in a soft kiss. That feeling of being the only two people in the world intensified, and though she’d never had any truly romantic feelings towards him before now, Cadi somehow felt she would never, could never, kiss anyone else again after this. Something about the events in Exile had bonded them together in such a way that it didn’t seem she would ever be rid of him, whether they were equals or not. Right now, needing him was all she could think about, and the physical comfort the mostly silent man could offer, social sensibilities be damned.

She leaned into the kiss, steadying herself by placing her hands on his lean face. His lips were amazingly warm, and he wasn’t a bad kisser, either, which surprised her more. A strong hand cradled the back of her head as the pressure on her mouth increased. She parted her lips and allowed his tongue to slip in and massage hers gently. A warm glow seemed to travel downwards through her body, and she was glad to be seated, because she had a feeling her knees were on their way to becoming jelly.

“Hold on now,” She gasped as he pulled back. “Where the hell did you learn to kiss like that?!”

“I… thought you wanted me to kiss you,” He answered, his tone a little confused. “I can sense what you want from me, especially now, when we’re so close like this.”

She gritted her teeth and glared at him, feeling on the verge of tears. "Yes, I want you, but I want you to act like a human and not a damn Simulacrum…"

Seneca and Oran
When they first meet, Seneca and Oran have little to say to each other- but Seneca soon finds the taciturn elf to be a good listener, and in turn he begins to open up to her in turn, little by little. Though he treats Seneca with respect it becomes clear early on that she is a burden on him, though he insists that she is SUPPOSED to rely on him for protection- he is a knight, after all. But Seneca pesters him mercilessly for weapon's training, which leads to a deeper friendship as their trials continue. Before long, Seneca finds herself pining for the elf, but he resists her feelings, citing the differences in their stations, though he has secretly harbored an attraction for her from the beginning, though as time goes by and circumstances continue to change, he finds himself unable to leave her side and finds it more and more difficult to say he does not love her.

Brief story excerpt:

“Sir Oran’Ethilath of the Holy Order of the Knights of Hope, 4th Division Centurion, stop right there!” Seneca’s strident tone struck him in the back like a well placed arrow. Oran squared his shoulders and resolutely reminded himself that it was not chivalrous to thump a lady across the brow.

“Do not turn your back on me! I’m trying to be serious with you!” She panted as she ran to catch up with him.

“I must beg your pardon, lady, but you are not being serious at all,” He replied.

“I just told you that I care for you… that I… that I think I love you… and you accuse me of jest?” She sounded more hurt than angry now and Oran winced at the thickness in her voice. Making a lady cry was not only less than chivalrous… It was…

It was…

He wasn’t sure what it was, but he didn’t like it. The girl had enough reasons to cry without him giving her more.

“I do not think you jest, lady-”

“Seneca. I had you finally calling me Seneca, I don’t want to go back to ‘lady’ now.” She crossed her arms. “If I don’t jest, and I’m not serious, then what am I? And you seem awfully certain about the contents of my heart, when you’d be much better off looking to your own.” Her face was set into a mask of stubbornness, and a stray lock of golden hair hung directly down the middle of her forehead, which was smudged with dirt from the rough trail they walked.

If they were anyone else, he could tell her that she looked quite cute in this state. But he could not say that, he did not dare. There were many, many things he dared not say, including the things he knew she desperately wanted to hear.

“I think you are… mistaken,” He finally answered, choosing his words carefully, forcing himself to look her in the eye and not get lost in the leafy green depths of her gaze. “You are… young. And until now, you have not had the extended company of a man. It is only natural that you would find yourself infatuated-”

“Don’t take that patronizing tone with me!” She seethed. “So you’re older than me, presumably anyway, since you won’t tell me your actual age… so you’re an elf… you’re living the life of a human and I’ll speak to you just as I would to a human man!”

“You screech at human men in this way?” He responded mildly.

“You’re impossible!” He could tell she was quivering with the effort to not stomp her foot. “Go on and tell me you don’t have feelings for me, but we will both know you lie! I have seen the way you look at me, when you think I do not see… I hear your voice in my dreams, and vague impressions of the future crowd around me when I close my eyes. You are always there, that much I know, though without the Mirror I cannot know for sure what will actually happen to us, I know you’re going to be with me. And I… I just… wanted to be honest with you. I didn’t see the point of pretended there was nothing going on here when I know in my heart that there is.”
