Welcome Newcomers and BOWBS Fans to BOWBS Manga 5th Anniversary Celebration and Contest.

This contest was made to not only celebrate the 5th Birthday of BOWBS but also to thank the artist Belladona Nightshade for bringing a worderful thing onto Gaiaonline as well as our lives and to thank the fans for their support in helping making BOWBS Manga be as big as it is today.

I joined BOWBS and Met Belladona Nightshade 2 years ago on its 3th Birthday Celebration and has stuck with her and the manga thus far. What at that time was simply helping her out getting people to stick around in her thread by offering Gold or Items for reaching certain pages has evolved now into the behavior and duties I have entrusted myself today as being BOWBS sponsor and head of "BOWBS Treasury Fund" to have prizes to give out for all the contest BOWBS has.

Since two years ago when I first saw BOWBS I've definately seen it evolved into much more than just a manga now having it's own stickers, fan groups, and dedicated readers and perhaps much more in the future. It was something I foresaw back when I first decided to help out, all it needed was a little push and the help of all it's fans to make it happen.

Surely we'll see much more amazing things from this Manga and I certainly can't wait to see what those things are. All I can say now is enjoy the contest and do your best to keep helping BOWBS Manga be as great as it is now in the future if not more.

  For this catagory, I'd like for you to draw our beloved BOWBS characters celebrating their 5th Year Anniversary. In other words, draw them partying and having fun. (After all it is a celebration that they should be well proud of.) Must contain all of the BOWBS characters. Clay & Ink + Cameo Characters are not a requirement, by BOWBS characters I meant just the primary crew.

Category 1: BOWBS 5th Anniversary

When ever I'm asked to judge an art contest, my first and most important criteria is always THEME. Because there are different levels of artists that try their luck against others, I try to center it more on how well the theme is being carried out & executed then look at the level of detail & effort is being put into the work to last come to style & artistic talent.

Here are the top winners starting from 5th to 1st:

5th Place: ixithedustkeeperixi:
I liked the idea of using the chibis for the 5th year anniversary because they look like they're 5 years old. lol They are all cute and happy and reflect their personalities well!

4th Place: Kiskis:
Similar to Dustkeeper's theme, Kiskis shows an adorable cast jumping happily for the anniversary. I like that in this, only the girls and chibi-fied and the boys are regularly drawn. Bella and Bubbleh are so cute!

3rd Place: ParasiticPrinciples:
I really like the classy look this brings along with seeing the BOWBS crew dressed their best for the party! The layout is really unique and the photos of everyone look great! Awesome style and a very relaxed BOWBS crew.

2nd Place: Thaliat Everwood:
I liked this entry from the moment I saw it. Thaliat does seem to enjoy making entries that put you in the mix of things and this scene with the characters casually dancing, eating & being in the moment really does make it feel like a party!

1st Place: Lenahi:
New-comer Lenahi really impressed me with this fully rendered & well executed image of our crew being taken a secret snap-shot by someone Sera? Joshe's fans? Heck, maybe it's YOU. Yes, you the readers that are taking a picture of our crew in the mix of things. I do love the obvious effect, the original style & the fully rendered image!

Category 2: BOWBS Future

Judging this one was quite tricky. I didn't know if I should go by the likelihood if these events happening or if I should simply go by the creativity of the events that were submitted. I had to first eliminate things that I said quite often would not happen. This category is for: "future events" so things that had the highest likelihood of never happening were the first to to taken out of the picture. Other things that were established in the cannon of the series were preferred and scenarios where the potential was higher where finally judged on interpretation & effort put into the piece. Now remember that just because I have chosen certain images does not necessarily mean that they will happen. Just that the chance is there.


In this case, I will start from 1st to 5th place to explain my logic on the choices. Also, I will give my reasons for not selecting the remaining images as part of the top 5.


1st place:Yukidream13:
Yukidream's portrait of Alba and Bella going on a date is probably one of the most awaited moments in the series and certainly a scenario that many are wishing to happen. Of course the idea of this category is to put yourself in the writer's shoes and she chose a romantic date (probably on Isle de Gambino) for this eagerly awaited couple. The execution is great and the detail is quite stunning! Wonderful sense of lighting as well! Congratulations Yuki!

2nd place:ParasiticPrinciples:
I had trouble not giggling at seeing Parasitic Principle's scenario with Bella painting Alba. It leads to question exactly WHAT she is painting of Alba? Portrait or Nude? xd *moves perverted ideas a side* It is a really original concept and it is always nice for me to see someone draw Bella in the middle of doing something artsy. This is a very probably moment actually. wink

3rd place:KageAkagawa:
Kage went in a very original angle choosing to portray the aftermath of a fight with Bonclay and Ravager coming to the rescue. It's been shown before that Ravager has very tormented feelings towards Alba. This is another very probably scenario (maybe not the premise Kage created but the fighting part at least.) considering we have yet to continue the fight between the rival shops. This also goes to show how the idea can overcome last minute entries right Kage? wink

4th place:Thaliat Everwood:
Now before you all start to jump to conclusions just hear me out: Josh obviously places a lot of importance on Bella and is protective and caring towards her. So this as a potential future event is entirely possible. The two are quite close and Thaliat's theory is not one that is impossible. I like the fact that we can't see Bella's face as well since we don't know how she'd react to that kind of confession. This might be the kind of scenario to look forward to... if it ever happens. wink

5th place::
Now although I do totally love this image by Dustkeeper, the reason why it is placed lower in list is simply because a proposal by an admirer isn't an impossible feat. xd but any sort of marriage to the 16 year old is not something I plan to do in the series. However, that doesn't mean people can't propose. lol I really do love her cute expression but with so many admirers... who knows if she'll say yes. lol

6th place:Jewel89: :
Although the description told me what was going on, I had some trouble deciphering it from the image itself and this is one of the reasons why it didn't make it in the top 5. It is still nice to see the fanclub though and I want to remind the viewers that they will be coming back later on in the comic.


7th place:ParasiticPrinciples:
I have told people that potential pair for JB might not really happen but that doesn't stop people from hoping right? xd Either way, this to me is a bit of a crack pairing that even I had imagined at some point but really decided against it in the end. Though for JB+Bubbleh fans it is a treat to see. xd

8th place:ParasiticPrinciples:
Although this is a beautifully made image of Bubbleh as a bride it's pretty doubtful that I'll ever really get to that point in the comic save for an epilogue of some sort. Also, this image is still pretty similar to my Bella bride image as well.


5th place::
Here is a cute baby that Dusty made to be Bella & Alba's daughter. Although this is quite adorable it is also quite far off in the future and would only ever happen in an epilogue or future side story (if they get married) so for those reason only it had to be excluded from the top 5.

5th place::
Thaliat herself knew this was a stretch for this image (since she is not a cannon character) but I still really appreciate a full comic being done and i think this deserves an honorable mention so thank you so much for this I really enjoyed it a lot!! heart

Category 3: Favorite Scene

In this particular case, my criteria for evaluation was who could interpret the most accurately the scene in their own way. So what was important for me was things like getting the right dialog if it was present, making sure that the details of the character matched what was in the original and so on. re-interpretation was the key as well have detail & effort in the piece.

Here are the top winners starting from 5th to 1st:

5th place::
Parasitic takes the 5th spot with Bubbleh's thoughts on JB. The only reason this scored lower was because Bubbleh's reaction to JB's state is a bit downplayed compared to the comic where Bubbleh was really discouraged in her misinterpretation. This is still a nice piece and I always really enjoy Parasitic's style. biggrin

4th place::
Here we have some classic BOWBS with JB being tormented by the clowns. Those poor people never knew what hit them... and never will any of you. lol

3rd place::
Dusty scored another top spot with this cute animated gif of Serayoth's vision of Bubbleh. I have to admit that that's exactly what I imagined Serayoth seeing just as Bubbleh walked away. xd

2nd place::
Darn Dustkeeper and her adorable chibis! xd I really enjoy how she drew Bella, especially with such an incredulous face simply denying Carcer's Sanity. I always enjoy seeing guest characters pop up and you gotta love those ducks! xd

1st place::
This should not come as a surprise. Euclids remade probably one of my persona favorite scenes that really shows off Josh's flirting powers. Beautifully rendered, Euclids simply took the first panel and made it more grandiose adding life and color into the scene! Amazing work and indeed worthy of the number 1 spot in this category.

“Bellaaaaaaaaaaa! Come on! Please?” moaned Josh, tugging on Bella’s arm, next to the swings. “I cant do this without your help!” Josh said, trying to get her to walk over to a little stand he had set up made from a cardboard box, with some crayons. “I wont do it Josh, I said no! you really think people would pay for kisses from me anyway?” Bella said, a little skeptical of the idea itself, and fully against her involvement in it, yet, despite her absolute refusal, Josh continued to pull. “What if I give you the crayons I used on the sign?” Josh said, reaching into his pocket and pulling them out. The box was beaten up, and the crayons inside doubtless mostly broken. “I don’t want them. You know I don’t like to color!” Bella said, turning her back to josh, tilting her head up away from him. Dismayed, Josh let go of her hand, and started to walk away, sulking, and Bella glanced at him, starting to feel bad. Turning, Bella started after him to tell him she had changed her mind, she would do it for the crayons, but at that moment, the teacher called everyone back into the school.

~afternoon Recess~

Bella had been watching Josh throughout the school day, and he had seemed to be sulking the entire time. Feeling a bit bad, the moment Recess started, Bella sought him out, and found him, starting to fold his stand up. “Josh! Wait!” Bella said, running up to him. Looking up, Josh gave Bella the saddest look she had ever seen. “You were right Bella… it was a stupid idea…” Josh said, but was about to say something more, when Bella cut him off. “No, your wrong, I should have gone with it, for a bit at least, I mean, their just kisses, right?” Bella said, thinking to herself it wouldn’t matter anyway, since she was convinced no one would want to pay for a kiss from her anyway. “Well,” Josh said, there’s still time… if you wanna do this for me I mean.” Josh said, putting the sign back up on the box stand. Getting behind it, Josh handed the crayons to bella. Standing there, the pair waited and waited, for a customer, Bella eventually getting bored, and opening up the crayons, and doodling on the box. Finally, giving up, Josh began to fold the box up. “Well, Bella, I guess you were right… no one came to… Hey, this is really good!” Josh said, looking at the box, which had an extremely detailed portrait view drawing of the student teacher on it, in crayon. “Bella, did you draw this?” Josh asked, an idea forming in his head. This was good enough, maybe he could sell it… nodding, Bella was surprised, and didn’t know what to say. She had always thought herself to be a bad artist, but now Josh was saying it was good? “I bet we could sell this Bella!” Josh said, to which Bella simply responded by walking away. Sighing, Josh knew not to try again today, but he would try again tomorrow, and the day after, and so on. And even as Bella walked away, something had been sparked, a drive to be good, desire to draw well. And a desire to share it with the rest of the world! But it wouldn’t be cheap… maybe she should talk to josh again after all…

Review: I simply adored Pyro's writing style and the characterization of Bella towards Josh was perfectly executed. The only problem with this situation was Josh's characterization. Even if Josh's influence on Bella was right, Josh's attitude reminded me much more of JB. Josh isn't really that interested in selling the way that JB is so other then that hitch, this was very enjoyable to read.

Criticism: Yeah, the only issue really was really the Josh/JB personality switch.



2nd place: Miyu-tan

Recess; the favorite time of children everywhere. Normally it was at least. But something less fun was happening around the swing-set for Mizz Bubbleh.

“I can’t believe you, Bubbleh! You were the last one to play with it! Now give it back!”

Carcer shouted over everything, red-faced with fury as Bubbleh was yelled at. Slowly a crowd began to form at raised voices; full of children of all grades watching.
Pushing through the crowd, another little kindergarten girl.

“Why are you being mean to Bubbleh?!” Bella accused Carcer, throwing herself in front of Bubbleh to shield her friend from her. “It’s not fair to blame her for things!” she warned Carcer, glaring at the girl who was now looking angrier and redder than before.
“It’s her fault!” Carcer blurted out, pointing toward the cowering blonde-Bubbleh behind her. “She stole my rubber-duckies!”
“Did not!” Bubbleh piped up, determination in her little eyes.

Of course Bubbleh was too shy a child to steal. Bella knew this as well, because she glared fiercer than before at Carcer. Before she could pipe up about the lies Carcer was telling, a hand was placed on her back. A cherry-headed Josh stood behind her; smiling with a worried look in his eyes.

“Why don’t we just go look for Carcer’s… rubber duckies?” looking back toward Carcer with a confused expression.

She was getting mad at Bubbleh for her missing duckies? Getting a sour nod from Carcer as his only reply. At least he was getting it right and Bella was being satisfied. Turning around and folding her arms, Carcer began to pout.

“The only reason you’d be able to find them is because she stole them in the first time.” she said stubbornly; surprised when two other boys made their way through the crowd.
“We’ll do it then!” JB declared him and Alba on the job decidedly, grinning and nodding to the other boy who seemed less than enthusiastic about it.

Carcer looked them over with a curious eye as Bella seemed ready to protest. Only Josh’s hand on her shoulder stopped her.

“If we let them lead Carcer will be happy and Bubbleh will be fine.” he reminded her in hushed tones, Bubbleh nodding behind them.

Carcer nodded as well, shaking hands with JB as the deal was made.

“C’mon! We’re going now!” he called to Alba, already pulling the other boy along with him. “
“What are you waiting for? Go make yourself useful and help him!” Carcer told them, sending them off with Alba and JB.

Bella seemed ready to protest again; coaxing by Bubbleh and Josh getting her to follow quieter. Soon the group confronted another; a familiar trio.

“You guys having fun on your stupid quest?” BonClay asked them, loosely followed by Kiba and Ravager. Upon seeing them, both JB and Alba sprang into action.
“BonClay did it!” the accused in unison, each taking a step forward.

Again, Josh played pacifier and put restraining hands on both of them.

“Calm down, stop being hot-headed.” he scolded them, pulling them back into place. BonClay just laughed, shaking his head.
“Calm down.” he mimicked mockingly in Josh’s voice, causing Alba to pull out of the hold the other male had been using.
“You stole the ducks didn’t you?!?!” he accused, pointing at them for emphasis.

To his surprise, instead of BonClay addressing him it was Ravager.

“You have some nerve; talking to us like that!” he growled, stepping forward to be face to face with Alba.
“You shouldn‘t fight!” Bella scolded them, but was basically ignored.
“You wanna fight then?” Alba used Bella’s words, turning them around as he curled his hand into a fist.
“You’re funeral.” Ravager only replied, curling the opposite hand of his into a fist as well.

Bringing it up at the same time-
Then down with a cry of “Rock! Paper! Scissors!” Both picked Rock, challenge coming out again. “Rock! Paper! Scissors!” Rock again. Repeated for two more times. They were bringing their fists up again when Bella, Bubbleh, and Kiba sprung into action. Kiba held back Ravager by his hand; Bubbleh and Bella doing the same.

“Stop this stupidness!” she told both the boys as they were pulled away from each other.

They still glared, but BonClay stepped between them. He looked between boys, before sighing. “This is dumb, we’re leaving.” he said decidedly, pulling Ravager by the shirt collar as they headed the opposite way from BOWBS. As an afterthought, he pulled something yellow from his pocket and tossed it back toward them. Running forward, Bubbleh caught it in cupped hands. It was a yellow rubber duck; Carcer’s name on the bottom. “Tell her to keep better track of her things.” he advised while leaving; BOWBS crowding Bubbleh with smiles for having her name cleared.

Review: I liked the situation with Carcer's ducks though the end part sort of confused me. I know that Bon Clay didn't want to be accused of something he didn't do but if he had the duck he should have just said where he found it to avoid the fight. Bon Clay is the type to pick his moments to fight so him saying no then giving them the duck seemed a bit strange. Other then that, kid spats are always funny. lol Good characterization on all the characters.

Criticism: For your next entries in the writing category I'd appreciate it if you properly spaced your paragraphs so I don't have to do it to be able to read it comfortably. It also honestly influences my decision when grading written pieces to be able to enjoy it without any added work from my part.

The room was otherwise silent, save for the fidgeting of a dozen children, all sitting around the circular rug, eagerly awaiting their teacher to allow them to play. She sat down alongside them, blue eyes falling on each and every one of her students, picking out the quietest of them all to start.

“Thaliat? What would you like to do, today?” she asked.

Thaliat’s eyes lit up excitedly, and her little hands clasped together.

“I want to play house, but only if Josh will play!”
“Me too!” chimed in another of the girls.

To prove her point and claim the boy all to herself, the blond pigtailed girl got up and wrapped her arms around him. Two others followed, including Thaliat. Josh grunted with a frown.

“Augh, get off’a me!” he growled.
“Alright, girls, back to your seats. We’ll let Josh decide next. What would you like to do, today, Josh?”

Sky blue orbs glanced about at the various areas of the room he could be at: The bookshelves for some reading, the sandbox for some castles, the easels for some finger painting. When he turned his attention back to the teacher, he saw all the girls staring- practically glaring at him- sealing his decision.

“I’ll play house.” He reluctantly agreed with a sigh, which resulted in a squeal of glee from most of the other girls.
“I’ll play, too!” piped in JB with his hand raised high, grinning at his best buddy Josh. He’d never let him suffer alone.

A silent Dusty lift her hand high in the air, her eyes begging the teacher to join along with Josh and JB. The teacher agreed with a gentle laugh.

“How about you, Bella? What would you like to do, today?” asked the teacher.
“I want to paint a nice picture.”
“I’ll go, too…” mumbled Alba, his hand half-raised, his cheeks in a deep blush which caused Bella to giggle.
“And you, Mizz?”
The horned girl smiled and pointed to the large aquarium filled with buckets and pipes. “I want to play in the water.”

Kiba, who was sitting next to Bubbleh chose the same, while Ravager chose to sit with a good book.

“Bah!” Bon Clay huffed, when he was the last one to be chosen. He crossed his arms. “This is stupid.”

He looked at all the other kids: Josh was being pulled by girls this way and that, JB was bargaining one item for a better one, Bella was painting a rainbow and giggling that Alba’s rainbow’s colors were reversed, Ravager was nestled comfortably on a large sofa, reading a silly book, and Bubbleh and Kiba were splashing away. He realized that everyone was having fun but him. With a frown, the boy remained where he was, pouting away.

But he couldn’t stay like that for long. His eyes rose up to look at Bella’s painting again. She had made little figures beneath the rainbow. From what he could tell, it seemed like her best friends. Slowly Bon Clay stood up and walked towards her.

“Want to join?” asked Bella, as she scooted over.

The boy, however, did not pick his own easel. Instead, he dipped his fingers in the blue paint, and, right on Bella’s paper, began painting. Alba paused in his own art to watch with Bella. Slowly Ravager and Kiba could be made out, smiling alongside Josh, JB, Alba, Bubbleh, and Bella beneath the rainbow. Bon Clay then dipped his fingers in the black paint to paint himself. With two dots for the eyes, and a curve for a smile, he turned to Bella for approval.

She smiled at him, but Alba had an idea. Dipping his own fingers in the black paint, he turned the smile into a rather scary frowning face. Bella’s eyes went wide in fear of what Alba’s brother might do. Surprisingly, the grumpy boy laughed with a nod.

“Perfect.” He said.

Review: Jeebus Seth. Really? Are you doing it on purpose to win me over? (Actually you are since I'm the judge. lol) I have to say I absolutely LOVED this. The pace, the way everyone's more hidden traits seemed to come out and the sort of simple situation had a lot of heart to it. I smiled multiple times upon reading this and I think for a category that is based off child versions of the characters that is very important. Also I like BonClay's final reaction. That was the clincher I think, getting the more complex character of BonClay. Also, the sense of loyalty between JB and Josh made me very happy because they are best friends regardless of their picking on eachother & bickering. Wonderful piece!

Criticism: I honestly don't have any. The pace was smooth and easy to read, the character were well represented and the whole thing was really enjoyable. I think you went up a level with this.
