Friday night. March 2nd of the year 2007. This recorded date will go down as one of the greatest nights of my life.
Anticipation was built enough ever since I heard that the fantastical New York Japanese Action Punk Comic band Peelander-Z came into town. I had heard many tall tales that their shows were a sight to behold, and a memorable experience. That, and the music was pretty good.
So, me and Greg go meet with the other guys, all prepared with helmets of our own, to head out for the show. After about three bands later, Peelander finally shows up on stage. The first time that Peelander Yellow banged on our helmets before they donned their costumes was proof enough that this was not going to be another "show."
This was more. MUCH MUCH more.
The setlist goes off without a hitch, playing their staples like STEAK! and YYY. Then, all of a sudden, he starts looking for people in the audience. We all raised our hands in a valiant effort to see what was coming next. Next thing you know, Peelander Yellow picks ME up on stage and hands me his beaten down, nostalgic yellow guitar.
It was a starstruck moment, but further more. I rocked the ******** house.
I was ripping on that guitar so much that I gashed my finger in the process, bleeding on his guitar. Next thing you know, more people get up on stage and take over the instruments of their beloved heroes. Then, Chris and the others get up on stage and jam with me. Such CRAZY HILARIOUS EXCITEMENT!!
We were surprised that our helmets didn't crack open from the ongoing craziness that followed. Not only that, me and my group of friends were brought up on stage and were presented as the Baltimore Peelander-Z Helmet Boyz. The perfect end to a perfect night.
After the last song was played, the venue people were pretty pissed, seeing that the show went on longer than expected, and barked at us to get out and quick. When we stepped out, we were all so stoked and blown away by what just occured, that words escaped us. Literally.
I'll post pictures of my helmet later on. But let it be known, young ones. Lest you want to experience a band so crazy, so hilarious, I heavily advise you to go to one of their shows. It is everything that a concert should be.
They will not disappoint.
