Feminine hygiene products: harmful or helpful? - National health
Many women worry about their feminine hygiene: Will these sanitary pads absorb my menstrual blood effectively? Can someone tell if I'm menstruating? Am I fresh enough? Many women have these worries, and a plethora of products are available to comfort us, to keep us smelling clean and fragrant all year round, and to ensure that our period is no more than a minor nuisance.

But do they work? And are they safe? There are concerns that some feminine hygiene products are harmful for our intimate health. Let's investigate.

Sanitary Pads and Tampons

Harmful: Many sanitary pads and tampons worn by women today promise to be cotton-soft. But that doesn't mean they are actually made with cotton. Most commonly, they are made with the synthetic material, rayon, bleached with chlorine. Chlorine can create a toxin called dioxin, which is not safe in the human body at any level.

Manufacturers are not required to reveal what they use in women's sanitary pads and tampons, because they're not considered medical devices? So you have no way of knowing what you're putting on the sensitive and highly-permeable skin of your v****a.

Be particularly aware of any sanitary product with a fragrance, as these are chockfull of chemicals including, but not limited to, polyethylene (PET), polypropylene, and propylene glycol (PEG). These are risky contaminants, linked to cancer, infertility, hormone disruption and birth defects.

Reduce your risk: If you're menstruating, you have to use sanitary napkins or tampons. It's estimated that the average woman uses more than 16,000 in her lifetime. So, how can you reduce your risk?

Try using an all-natural product, such as Natracare. Natracare sanitary products are available online, or at a health-store or pharmacy near you. They are made with 100% natural materials, are chlorine-free, dye-free, and fragrance-free, and will leave you feeling fresh all day long, without harming your delicate skin. Don't worry, they look and feel just like the pads you're used to. Tampons are also available.

Be healthy: Your v****a is a wonderful part of your body that has developed a method of self-cleansing. As long as you shower daily and wear fresh cotton underwear every day, you have no need for special vaginal cleansing products.

As we've discovered, many products that are sold to women as methods of improving feminine hygiene can actually be harmful, damaging our natural flora and causing potentially damaging side-effects. Remember that the v****a is a very sensitive area of the body, and that it's best to trust nature to deal with it.
