If you don't know anything about basic car care and maintenance you can end up unnecessarily wasting a lot of money on repair costs. On top of getting familiar with your specific model, you also need to learn other tricks. You could save both money and time moving forward by doing so.

Each time you get your vehicle repaired, no matter what the reason, be sure you have a record of it. If your car has issues in the future, it is useful to be able to give your mechanic all such records. The records can help the mechanic determine the problem.

Before making your payment to the mechanic when picking up your car, take it out for a spin first to check that everything is working. A lot of people forget to test drive their vehicle and pay for repairs that did not really fix their problem.

A burned out headlight or taillight is a common repair. This can usually be done yourself. Doing so is easier in some cars than others, but it is still cheaper than paying a mechanic to make the replacement. Ask whether someone you know can show you how to fix it.

You do not always have to have your dealer repair your car. There are many technicians that may be closer in proximity to your house. Consider using one if they appear to be good.

Don't try and figure out what is wrong with your car by yourself. Cars are complex and it takes expertise to fix them. It may seem like an easy fix, but in modern computerized vehicles, that may not be the case. Let your mechanic do the diagnosing. Tell them everything you can about the issue, but allow them to determine the cause.

There are quite a few body shops that are just out there to take off the tires you have and put older ones on. It is a scam that is used to make more money off of uneducated people. Put chalk marks on the tires prior to bringing the car in. If you don't have the chalk on your tires still when you pick the car up, then you know things aren't right.

Don't buy any parts that come with a promise of lasting a lifetime. A lot of the time they just say this so that they're able to make more off of you. Some cars may come with transmission fluid guaranteed for a "lifetime". It is not something that will be changed often, but the transmission fluid is not guaranteed for a "lifetime." In reality, you should change it around once every 80,000 miles.

As discussed above, learning a few things about auto repair can help you fix small problems yourself and save a lot of money. Not only will you be able to pass along the knowledge that you learned, but you will be able to rely on yourself the next time you have automotive problems. Utilize the knowledge provided here to help you perform your own car repairs.
