Licensed clinical psychologists who possess a PhD and additional required training may prescribe medication for the treatment of mental illness in the states of Louisiana, New Mexico, and the U.S. territory of Guam under what is called RxP legislation. Aside from those areas, only medical psychologists have prescriptive authority.
