The Myth of Leadership Development
Cultivating leaders is a major tactical action for most large organizations and a multi-million dollar business for universities, consultants and training businesses. But if we have the meaning of leadership badly wrong, much of this investment could be wasted. There http://www.lane4performance.com/ are at least 3 issues with contemporary leadership theory:

1. Leaders are depicted as occupying positions of authority over others which means until in charge of people are you that you can not show leadership.

2. The concept that leadership is a skill set that is learnable cultivates the perception that you can not be a leader without training.

Dispersed Leadership and Employee Involvement

Another vision of leadership shows it as something all workers can do. Certainly, the claim "not everyone can be a leader" is most definitely true when the focus is on what is needed to be a senior executive or even a front line manager. However, when leadership is defined only as encouraging a much better way, then all workers who take a stand on any occupation-related issue, even in a very local, small scale fashion, can reveal leadership to their colleagues' supervisors and upward to they. So called direction that is informal means something different - taking charge of a bunch. Just boosting new paths has absolutely nothing to do with being in charge, formally or otherwise, of an organization of individuals.

Examples of Leadership Re defined

" When Martin Luther King Jr. affected the U.S. Supreme Court to rule segregation on buses unconstitutional, he'd no managerial authority over that organization.

" When the Sony worker who influenced top management to adopt his proposition for PlayStation, they didn't report to him.

" A new customer care employee might set a good example of a better method of serving customers without being in charge of anyone.

" Whenever you determine your boss to think differently you have had a leadership impact on such individual.

None of those examples entails handling the people on whom the direction impact was felt. The leader sells the tickets for the journey and we should update our concept of management to care for driving the bus to the destination. Obviously, further injections of direction might be required enroute to resell the journey's values, but the majority of the task in getting there requires good management skills. Management should be reconfigured as a nurturing, empowering and function that is facilitative, not only a mechanically controlling one.

Executive Development

What really gets developed in so called leadership development programs are rounded executives. The truth is the fact that leadership, imagined as encouraging new directions and challenging the status quo, is founded on youthful rebelliousness, something that's not a learnable skill set. Socalled leadership development programs actually turn employees that are already leaders into supervisors. Good supervisors are needed by organizations.

This view stands the traditional picture on its head: it is the front line knowledge workers who are the actual leaders in organizations, not their managers. Of course, executives can also show leadership they too boost a better method.

Redefining Leadership's Benefits

The main advantage is making it clear that, to do so, you don't need all the abilities connected with being in charge of individuals and that all employees can be leaders. You only need a great idea as well as the courage to defend it. Additional potential advantages include better drive and engagement of all employees, more initiation and front line possession, talent retention that is better and less pressure to show a sophisticated organization needs to each of the leadership.

Why Make the Shift?

Leadership is based on power the power of style to command a group.
