The defense attorney says his client was successful because he treated people decently and that the prosecution’s witnesses included disgruntled employees fired by Pontillo.
Instead, some clients were handcuffed to gym equipment in the back of the business for hours until they called a relative or friend to bring money for the payment. He said the business made its money by detaining and intimidating clients into paying what they owed the business.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Dave Harris said in court that the bail bonds business owner, Aleo John Pontillo, created the work policies that led to employees detaining clients against their will to extort payments from them. Stanislaus Superior Court Judge Scott Steffen informed the jury that the court dropped seven grand theft allegations against Pontillo, but a few grand theft claims remain.
Pontillo is on trial on charges of kidnapping for extortion. That’s against the law, the prosecutor argued.
“He called the shots and knew everything that was going on,” Harris said about Pontillo. Harris claimed that was Pontillo’s plan, which the prosecutor called “dialing for dollars.”
