The nature of pride and the necessity of forgiveness
A necessary quality;mankind's greatest flaw, depending on who you ask this question to. But what is it, really? As with many things, more often than not there is a lot of confusion in a person's inner realm - feelings, thoughts, rationalizations - so many things are gravely mislabeled or blown out of proportion and that action can only beget more of said confusion.
Pride is commonly associated with one's sense of self, the measure of one's degree of personal achievement in any given area, the whole of one's ideas, acquired habits, reflexes and so on. In one word, one's ego is highly linked to the usual meaning of pride.
Once one's ego stretches too far and starts closing its grip around the lives of others, then it becomes a disease and not an identifying trait; it is commonplace to see the strong further crushing the weak, not necessarily physically, but on an ego level and that leads to frustration and even tragedy when certain limits are surpassed.
Is pride a bad thing then? the scourge of humanity? as I see it, yes and no - the dose is what makes it medicine or poison. To keep pride from being dark and destructive, it requires and equal, if not greater measure of compassion and there is no finer manifestation of said compassion than sincere, heartfelt forgiveness.
It is something any human needs, both forgive and be forgiven. When one stops realizing the need of the delicate balance between pride and compassion then much time will be lost in learning this harsh lesson.
