Chapter One

It was their very first year of college. Jade Sullivan, Maya Strong, Audrey Gonzales had remained close friends throughout those four hectic years of high school. Maya managed to keep her relationship with her boyfriend, Frank for four whole years But she had become worried when he made the decision to not attend college like she had. She loved him dearly, but his friends were a major league pain in her a**. Especially Gerard and his girlfriend Vivian Edwards. Oh that Vivian. If Maya could kill anyone, it would probably be Vivian. She was that girl who had no real goal. The only reason she ever got up off her lazy a** was to go hang out with her boyfriend and to annoy Maya. Jade refused to hang out with Maya and Frank if she knew Vivian would be there. Even Audrey, who was more often than not a very calm and friendly person. Even Vivian drove Audrey to rage. What does that tell you?

Jade never had the same luck as Maya when it came to relationships. She briefly dated a guy named David who was super sweet and was a musician, which Jade absolutely loved. But things just became complicated. They were both busy and never had enough time for each other. It got to a point where people didn’t even know they were a couple. It wasn’t a very happy relationship anymore so they decided to end it. Jade didn’t hear much from him after that.

Now Audrey was seemingly lucky, never dealing with ex-boyfriends or boyfriends with dumbass friends. She went through high school focusing on her schoolwork. She ended up graduating with straight A’s in all of her classes for all four years. Everyone thought it was an amazing accomplishment and of course it was. But she had to admit she got a little sad when Jade and Maya would go out somewhere with their boyfriends. Even when it was just Jade and Maya, Audrey would just stay home to work. She did regret doing that. But now that she was a college student, she was going to find herself. She wasn’t going to just stay home and study all the time. She was going to go out sometimes. It couldn’t hurt to do that sometimes right?

The three of them decided to meet on the school’s parking lot so they didn’t have to walk onto campus alone. Their morning classes were nowhere near each other but they still didn’t want to go in alone. Audrey, being the only one who decided to live in a dorm, was coming from there and was the first one to meet Maya on the parking lot. Maya just sat in her car and sorted through her bag because she was absolutely convinced she forgot something. Any excuse to just go back home and jump back into bed and never go to college. Audrey tapped on her window and Maya was forced to move and get out of her car. She leaned against it for support just in case her legs weren’t able to carry her.

“Are you nervous?” Audrey asked, tapping on her leg. Maya chewed on the inside of her cheek for a minute before nodding, “A little I guess. We’ve become so accustomed to high school.”

“College shouldn’t be too different,” Audrey replied with a reassuring smile. Audrey would be the one smiling on the first day of college at nine in the morning. None of them were morning people but Audrey hid it well. When Jade pulled up almost violently, they could both tell she would not be in a happy mood. They could hear her grumbling about some idiot on the road as her tired body stumbled out of her car. Jade was used to sleeping until ten. She had gotten up hours earlier just so she could shower. She was definitely the complete opposite of a morning person.

“Who ever said college was going to be a good idea?” Jade said, mostly to herself but Maya and Audrey chuckled anyway. Jade adjusted her bag on her shoulder and headed for the front gate, “Let’s get this over with.”

Jade, Maya, and Audrey had all forgotten just how big the campus actually was. They’d only come once to get their classes. They knew there were all kinds of things to do besides school. There was even a goddamn bowling alley. They looked over their schedules again. Jade’s first class was a creative writing class, something she was excited about. She had taken creative writing in high school and had such an amazing time. Maya wouldn’t have that class until later on today but she did have an English class first which was still a pretty good first class. And Audrey had Art History first. Everyone’s morning was starting off alright.

“You guys are lucky you get all your classes over with right now,” Jade grumbled, “I have to come back tonight.”

“You could’ve done that too,” Audrey said.

“I have to work in the afternoon,” Jade leaned her head and rolled her neck back and forth, groaning, “I can’t afford to not work. Even though parking lots get ten times creepier at night.”

“You’ll be ok,” Maya said. She looked at her phone and sighed nervously, starting to fidget, “If we don’t leave right now we’re probably gonna be late for our first classes.”

They all scattered in the opposite direction like little cockroaches do when you turn a light on. Jade managed to find her class before anyone else did. It was completely empty and the room echoed a bit when the heels of her boots touched the ground. She was way too used to small rooms with little desks and the teacher right there in front of her. Luckily, if she sat in the front, she had a chance of seeing her teacher. No wait. Professor. She sat down in the middle of the first row and looked at her phone while she waited for everyone to come in.

“You’re a bit early aren’t you?” Jade jumped and her phone fell out of her hands and onto her lap. She grabbed the phone before it could slide off and hit the ground, tossing it into her bag. Her clumsiness made this guy who she could only assume was her professor laugh, “Did I scare you?”

“No!” Jade replied defensively, “I just so happened to drop my phone when you spoke. No big deal. I’m just clumsy.”

He laughed again and Jade looked down into her bag, pretending to look for something when in reality, she just didn’t want to look at him. Being surprised and dropping her phone wouldn’t bother her so much if he hadn’t laughed and asked her if he scared her like he was proud of it. She took a quick look at him and frowned. It did not help that he was just slightly good looking. He looked like maybe he was in his early forties. He was already off limits because he was her teacher but he would still be unattainable even if he was just some regular guy because of the twenty something year age difference between them.

“So, you’re-” Jade paused to look at her schedule, “Professor Winters.”

“That’s me,” he said, leaning against his desk, “And what’s your name?”

“Jade. Jade Sullivan,” she said as other students began entering the classroom. He smiled a little and nodded, “Pretty name.”

Maya walked in and thought she was horribly late for her English class because of all the people that were already there. It was mostly girls, giggling amongst themselves. She heard her professor’s name being thrown around a few times as she walked past them to end up sitting next to a guy who was sitting by himself.

“Is there something special about this guy or something?” Maya asked him.

“He’s got this accent you ladies seem to gravitate to,” he replied, “I’ve never seen him but according to every single woman in this room, he’s hot.”

“He can’t be that hot,” Maya scoffed as she smoothed out the paper in her binder and clicked her pen a few times anxiously. Finally the professor walked in and the room went silent. He had this way of getting your attention just by walking in the room. He didn’t have to say a word. All his talking came from his movements. He somehow looked scruffy but clean at the same time.

“That’s Professor Gray?!” Maya whispered, dropping her jaw. The guy next to her chuckled and shook his head, “Looks like he got to you.”

Once he got everyone’s attention, he began speaking, talking about how difficult this was going to be and he wouldn’t be holding their hands like their high school English teachers did and what he expected. Maya had to stop herself a few times because she hated to admit she was getting lost in that accent of his. He went over the syllabus for awhile and then class was over, just like that.

“You’re all dismissed,” he said and he sat at the edge of his desk while those stupid girls waved their stupid little fingers at him and said good-bye like stupid little teenage girls. Wait, why did Maya care how some girls waved to their teacher? Good question. She didn’t. She was happy in her relationship and was definitely not crushing on her freaking professor. Besides, he had to be at least early forties. That wasn’t right. Maya gave a quick wave to him as she headed out the door.

“It was nice to see you so focused today,” he said.

“How’d you notice me out of all those girls right in front of you drooling?” Maya asked, unintentionally sounding harsh.

“Oh no they weren’t listening to a thing I said,” Professor Gray flicked his wrist and shook his head. The exasperation was written all over his face no matter how much he tried to hide it, “You actually looked like you were listening to me. I like that.”

Audrey walked into the classroom just as her professor did. He smiled at her as sat down in the front row. He was very warm, very energetic. He seemed like he was doing his dream job, teaching art history. He even seemed excited passing out the syllabus.

“I should start by introducing myself,” he said, “I’m Professor Brooks.”

As soon as he opened his mouth and revealed his accent, he had every girl’s attention suddenly and it seemed to shock him. Audrey wondered if this was his first year teaching or if he genuinely had no idea that girls love men with accents, no matter what accent it is, they love it. After his pause, he continued on about his expectations and things of that nature.

“And I look forward to working with you guys,” he ended with that and everyone started to get up to leave, “Oh wait! I almost forgot. I’ll be looking over your work very closely during this semester. I’ll be doing a project of my own and I’ll be picking one of you to work with me.”

Audrey grinned and kept all the excitement on the inside. It would be amazing to work with her professor on some project. Who knew what this project even was. It could open some doors for all anyone knew. She tried not to get too excited because they was a chance he wouldn’t pick her. He had hundreds of other students who wanted this opportunity just as much as she did. She just hoped those annoying giggly girls didn’t get chosen. That would be a major bummer.

So there you go. Part one. Since I have no real knowledge of how college works, I will sometimes require help from my good friend Tiffany. She is a college student, I unfortunately am not sweatdrop awkward. I should be doing something productive with my life. OH WELL. Haha anyways, part two coming soon to a Gaia journal near you! rofl 4laugh
