Well I probably should have posted this sooner, since swim finals were a LONG time ago, but I only just thought of the idea now. So obviously, if you know anything about me, you know that I'm on my local high school swim team. A few weeks ago we were at the end of the season and that means that it's time for the swim Finals meet. Pretty much a really long version of a normal meet and instead of points on the line, medals are on the line. So this time I only had two events, the 200 yard Individual Medley (50 yards of each stroke, butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle, in that order) and the 100 yard butterfly. The 200 is a more skill oriented event while the butterfly is more raw power, but both require a lot of stamina, so I was feeling pretty proud that the coach saw fit to put me in both of those events. I wasn't too happy with my places in them though. Out of all the preliminaries times, I was fifth place out of twelve in the 200 IM and I needed to drop two seconds to get the guy above me. The butterfly I was seventh, so not even in the official running (The event is split up among the twelve by the fastest six in the Championship and the bottom six in Consolation, though everyone has equal chance based on their final times) but first in my heat. The 200 was first, so I started with that. Now we have a crazy fast person on our team, who totally dominates me usually. The crazy part about this race, is that for the first 50, we were neck and neck tied for first, with one guy right on our tail. I kept up with my guy through the first half of the backstroke, but fell behind by then and more so at the breaststroke when the other guy passed me, but I was able to stave off the guy in fourth by pulling out a hard 27 seconds for my 50 free, which was faster than my last rested 50 free. So I got third in that. After another hour of waiting, the butterfly came up and I hopped up first for my consolations, not feeling too concerned about it since it was consolations. So they started the race and right away, I take first and only widen the gap, forcing myself through the fatigue I normally get on the last 25 and getting my best time of 1:03.56. Then I get out of the pool, go back to our little camp that was set up for the long day, and no more than two minutes later, my mom ambushes me and starts yelling excitedly at me so that I can't understand her and then she finally manages to get out that I beat the guy in sixth place for the Championship and got bumped up in his place. The only problem was that he was one of our guys, so in the final standing, it didn't help to win finals at all. But hey, I get a medal. I'll be sure to have a picture up when I get it at the banquet. I'm sure mom will take loads of pictures.
