XBefore I go any further I want to state that no this isn't a hate-on journal tailored to rip the Twilight series a new one. I might do that later, but not right now. No, this is a thought that crossed my mind after an experience.
The Experience
When I start obsessing over a new series or show I usually look into all aspects of its fandom. From the casual watchers to the people who will mark they skin with the shows symbols. I also look into how people showcase their adoration like threads, fanfiction, fanart, icons, and such. I look up slang and hell if they have a wiki I go over that with a fine-tooth comb too. So, due to Supernatural being my fandom of choice. I looked at it's fanfiction.
Not to read, at least not unless I felt like it, but just to see who was the most popular character to write about [Dean], what was the most popular pairings [Sam/Dean, Dean/Castiel, and Dean/OC], and if I favorite characters ever get love [Yes, they do]. But I noticed something Fanfiction.net has now, it has a page where all the crossover stories go, and Supernatural had an actual decent amount of crossovers. I was curious to see what the show was crossed with the most.
And lucky me there was a popular toggle in which it lined up all the shows Supernatural is crossed with from most stories to least. What I was expected was Buffy: The Vampire Slayer [which was second best] and other shows like that. Maybe even shows that either Jensen or Jared had down previously so that there could be some mistaken identity hijinks. But, I was wrong, but you all expected that. The show that shared most of the crossovers with Supernatural.... was Twilight.
My first thought was that it must be hate fics where Sam or Dean destroy the Cullens or something like that. I was naive because I assumed from the way Supernatural treats teenage girls making out with vampires its more of a squicky idea, and Twilight is the most well known show for that very act. Instead of finding those fanfictions I found multiple Dean/Bella stories in which Bella is not who we think she is that she's actually a hunter or some other way to shove her into the Winchester's lives and hearts.
Which baffled me to say the least because if it is human Bella then she's proven time and time again she needs serious help to even survive in Forks and if it's Vamp!Bella well we already know the boys position on monsters. There is no way for it to work, at least that's when I looked at the overview of it all.
What Came Next
It took a little while, but what makes Bella the best from jumping shows is the fact that she doesn't have a personality really. In a sense she is a blank slate. She's like a mannequin or an original character who isn't really an original character. In a sense due to her lack of personality a fanfiction writer is given free reign on what her personality is then. It's like having an OC without having the readers feel like it's an automatic Mary-Sue. Sure you can't change her name, unless you give her a new cool nickname, or looks, unless you have her dye her hair, but you can give her an internal makeover.
She's so easy to use as a ragdoll because that's basically what she is. Stephanie Meyer never gave her too many defining attributes. All Bella seems to do is love Edward and do anything for him.
But Bella's Not the Only One!
As I was thinking this out, I did come to terms that Bella isn't the only one used as a way for the writer to get a romance with her favorite character. No, but in a sense she's the easiest. Though there is another character that is often given the short end of the stick.
Kagome from Inuyasha. This girl is like the fandom's bicycle. There is no problem that she hates Naraku, is probably slightly afraid of Sesshoumaru, or even that she seems to only like Koga as a friend. If the fan likes those males Kagome is either turned into a whore or used as a means to have a Not!OC OC.
So sure there are other ones, but one has to realize that when you take away Inuyasha out of the equation Kagome would still have those feelings for most of the other males. Bella on the other hand if you take Edward out of the equation it get blankness as Stephanie Meyer has so kindly proven for me.

That's how I see it at least, and I am willing to add more to this speculation/rant. X
