biggrin Cool - we had Japanese exchange students come visit us earlier this year, so we spent a lesson just talking to them - it was really fun. n_n

As for the Jaa mata thing, do you mean is it supposed to be spelt Jaa or Jya ? In kana, it's written Ji with a little ya, but it's generally written and pronouned as Jaa.

Sou desu ne? Zannen deshita. Watashi wa nihongo o hanasu ga maa maa desu.

Just correcting your sentance a little -

Watashi wa jouzu-ni nihongo o hanashi masen. The particle 'o' is more appropriate, as you're talking about a verb. Ga is more of a descriptive particle.

@Thomas: biggrin Signed up.

Konnichiwa - [literally translated - this day (is) (kon=this, nichi=day, wa= signpost particle]

Good evening (5pm until 10pm)
Konbanwa - [literally translated - this night (is)]

Good night
Oyasumi nasai - [literally "Take a break/rest"]

Counting

One Ichi
Two Ni
Three San
Four Shi/Yon*
Five Go
Six Roku
Seven Schichi/Nana*
Eight Hachi
Nine Kyuu/Ku*
Ten Jyuu

* "Shi" means death. Therefore, people use the word yon instead of four in some cases, and some hospitals don't have a fourth floor, counting the floors 1,2,3,5.

Nana is interchangeable with schichi, and is most often used when saying "schichi" couldbe confusing - like when giving phone numbers.

Ku is used instead of Kyuu for the same reason as Nana is used.

To count above ten, we essentially say 'Ten and ~" eg. 11 is jyuu ichi, and 15 is jyuu go. To count above twenty, we essentially say '~ tens and ~' eg. 23 is ni jyuu san, and 36 is san jyuu roku.

Your Homework

Learn the 8 Kana given - making flashcards helps a lot - and learn the counting numbers. Practise writing the Kana - if you have an old maths book, practise in the squares in that. You need to be able to both read the kana fluently, and be able to write them clearly.

This is almost entirely non-sequiter, but seeing the counting part reminded me of an Aikido class I was in a few years ago. We had to count every hand-stretch when we were warming up 10 times in Japanese. 3nodding
