Eliana had scouted out many parts of her forest home. The woods, while a maze to some, were a familiar place to her. Having spent so much of her time wandering through the needle covered paths and walking under the leafy boughs of the trees that covered the expanse of land she called home, Eliana had plenty of time through the years to memorize all the possible paths, find all the possible landmarks, and she was quite positive she had found every squirrel nest in the area to boot. It seemed she was running out of adventures to have in her small, little world.
Eliana sighed softly as her claws bit in to the earth, leaving small grooves in the soft dirt. She had tread her current route through the woods so many times, she didn't need to bother looking where she walked. Muscle memory dictated when to turn, when to lift her claws and hooves a little higher to avoid tripping and embarrassing herself (not that anyone would witness the misstep, the idea was still enough to mortify her). She could walk the path with great ease, left to her own musings and the world around her. Eliana thought such an existence was peaceful, although her heart yearned for something more. Something... a little more grand.
She was never someone meant to go on great adventures. Eliana found thrills t be a little too thrilling. She was to faint of heart for the terrors of predators, and while she had claws to defend herself from such creatures, Eliana had never needed to use them for such purposes and had no intentions of ever doing so. Even though her heart yearned for something bigger, something more, something... different, Eliana knew she wasn't ready for a grand adventure, let alone leaving the edge of the forest. It was safe here, familiar. Even if it was boring and the same thing day in and day out, it was her home.
Screech!
Eliana quickly took several, quick steps backwards. A terrible, shrill sound was hitting her ears. The sound some sort of animal would make if it were in pain. The scream was terrifying and unlike anything she had ever heard before. She had seen rabbits carried off by birds of prey, and even their shrieks of terror were nothing compared to what had just echoed through the forest. What creature could have ever made such an awful sound?
Her gaze flitted from surface to surface, trying to find the source of the noise as her heart pounded loudly in her ears. She had felt something underneath her claws, something with mass, something that was soft. Eliana had stepped on something living. The white and yellow feathered mare looked about in panic, trying to calm her nervous, uneven breathing all the while.
"C-calm down, c-calm down..." She murmured softly, still trying to find the screams source. Eliana didn't see anything in her immediate area, which meant it had to be coming from somewhere deeper in the forest. Her ears turned as the mare listened for another screech, hoping to find the animal that was in distress so she could help it.... if there was any hope in her being able to do so.
