[Requirements: ]This event happens entirely while your character is sleeping. This is doable for all factions, and unlike the happy, fun Wonderland of the Wonderland simulation, this version seems a little more sinister and disjointed.

[ Rules ] Open to all characters (not including quest)

gaia_angelright This artifact quest differs somewhat from others, it is staggered in real time, this means each dream IC day in the forest represents roughly an OOC "day" in Inception-land, however your character gauges that. This gives this mission a gated nature, it cannot be completed in one day. When your character wakes up, only a couple of actual IC hours could have passed.

gaia_angelright If one of your party falls behind or misses a few days they are able to complete prompts to catch up with the rest of the group, this is the one exception which can be made to the nature of this quest.

gaia_angelright Seperate RPs are okay! For any other questions, feel free to ask in the qna on discord, or here!

gaia_crown [ Day 1 - The Tulgey Woods: ]

Finding the location of Wonderland is something which happens by accident. On the way to some other location in pursuit of an artifact, some hunters are known to end up somewhere else entirely due to a minor portal malfunction. Your hunter and their companions are some of these people.

The forest itself is seemingly unending, perpetually dark but with the grass and trees lit from within by strange ethereal light. The sky overhead where glimpsed through the branches is an impossible black and there is no moon.

Everything in the forest itself is not quite right and any flora and fauna that they come across is not like anything they might see on Earth. Be as creative as you like with this, all harmless creatures and flowers are free to make up. Everything is like earth seen through a bizarre lens and jumbled up with other creatures and objects, the more absurd the better.

Some examples though are animals who are partially inanimate objects and sentient plants.

gaia_crown [ The Mushroom Patch ]

You come to a grove of strange mushrooms interspersed with signs which state EAT ME. There seems to be no way forward until you do just that.

gaia_angelright These prompts can be done individually or one person can roll and people can collectively respond. This is the first day wandering in the tulgey woods. Minimum of 800 words which can be soloed or back and forth rp. The hallucinations can be individual or shared with characters present able to see it all like ghosts who can watch but cannot interact.

Roll 1d10
Quote:
1. A small green mushroom, it tastes like a favourite food. It makes the eater relive a childhood meal, including the location it happened and the people present.
2. Large red mushroom with white spots, it tastes concerningly poisonous, it makes the eater relive a time when they were very angry.
3. A soggy blue mushroom, it tastes like rainwater, it makes the eater relive a time when they were very sad.
4. Bright orange mushroom that tastes spicy, it makes the eater relive a time when they were jealous.
5. A small fuzzy pink mushroom that tastes like soft vanilla, it makes the eater relive a time when they felt strong love
6. A colourless grey mushroom which tastes like paper, it makes the eater relive a time when they felt alone.
7. A sickly yellow mushroom which tastes sour, it makes the eater relive a time when they felt regret
8. A bright purple mushroom which tastes like chocolate, it makes the eater relive a time when they felt happy
9. A green flat mushroom which tastes like a favourite drink, it makes the eater relive a time when they felt part of something
10. A brilliant white mushroom that glitters like stars, it tastes like nothing ever tasted, it makes the eater relive a time when they felt wonder

On completion of this task, when everyone has partaken of their mushrooms the way opens up, the leaves parting to reveal another twisting path onwards. Somewhere up ahead a purple cat skips off into the shadows.

gaia_crown [ Day 2 – The Winding Forest ]

After a lot more wandering through the forest, following endless winding paths, they end up in a darker, more sinister part of the woods, the path once again blocked by gnarled trees and thorns making progression difficult. In the forest, it is impossible to see the sky and any glimpse of it is pitch black. Already claustrophobic it only becomes more so.

gaia_angelright Once again these prompts can be a shared experience (with the exception of the cat prompt) but everyone needs to roll, you don’t need to do the same prompt twice. You progress regardless. Once again total word count for the day must exceed 500 words per person either in one post or spread out through some rp/discussion.

Choose a path to proceed ahead
Roll 1d4 -

Quote:
1. Caterpillar - Finding yourself herded by the brambles and thorns down a tightly winding path, you find yourself at the many feet of an enormous caterpillar smoking a hookah. It looks mostly uninterested at your arrival, but does turn its attention on you, taking a long puff of its pipe and exhaling strange undulating smoke rings. It sighs. “Who are you?” it asks.
Only if you answer the question of who you really are in 100 words or more will he let you proceed, and for your trouble you gain a piece of mushroom which lets you either shrink or grow within reason in the strange world you find yourself in, but you cannot choose which (roll 1d6, odd is large, even is small)

2. Cat - You end up on a wildly twisting path through the forest, seeing the same sights over and over. You are certain you are lost and that no matter what direction you turn you always find yourself back at the same place. Before you appears a large smile, followed in turn by a striped and sinister looking cat. No one else in your group can see him but you and he speaks to you about one of your deepest secrets. You find yourself temporarily driven a little mad by the aura of the creature and you turn upon your teammates or self. This is mercifully temporary and after several minutes sanity returns once again.

3. Tea Party - Through a broad and leafy path you come across an enormous table laid for a tea party with three figures at at it, the march hare, the hatter and the dormouse. They welcome everyone to join them but no one is permitted to leave until they furnish the others with either a riddle or a story.

4. Oysters - The path opens up to a hazy sea shore and as they go they (either one individual or any number of people present) begin to lose sense of where they are and who they are. Soon enough they have to stop exhausted, overcome with the realisation that they are and were always oysters. They stop, only to be found by a large walrus in a suit and a carpenter. What began as a pleasant walk quickly degenerates into them being eaten in a graphic and unpleasant way.

Mercifully afterwards, the entire party snaps back to reality shaken but unharmed.

gaia_crown [ Day 3 – The Red Queen’s Castle ]
Routes are player choice - Anyone wanting to reach the final throne room must pass at least one of these prompts

Route 1 - Painting the roses red
You come across a group of people sized playing cards frantically trying to paint white roses red. They enlist you to help.

Roll 1d20, if you roll above 7 then you are successful in helping them and they approvingly let you pass into the castle out of gratitude, if you roll below this then you must choose one of the below two tasks to complete to proceed.

Route 2 - The castle maze -
Another way into the castle is via the castle’s enormous hedge maze, this way is perilous and difficult but can have hidden rewards. You need to roll twice successfully to pass.

Roll 1d6
1 - Success - You mentally map out the maze as you go, successfully remembering the path you need to take.
2 - Success - Ahead of you the strange cat appears and points you down the right path.
3 - Success - Runic household item - Small runiced appliance
4 - Fail - You encounter nothing but dead ends and lose your sense of direction.
5 - Fail - A dangerous pit opens up at your feet, so close you almost fall in, realising your way is now blocked.
6 - Success - You hear arguing around a corner which leads you in the right direction.

gaia_angelright If you fail you find yourself back at the beginning of the maze, either start over the maze or choose one of the other two prompts you haven’t done to proceed.

Route 3 - Prompts
You find yourself at a strange tunnel lined all the way through with mirrors. It is dark and as you go you grow more and more disorientated. After a time you realise your own reflection is watching you. It speaks to you and states. “You will only make it if you face yourself.”

Choose one of the below prompts and write 500 words on it.

- Your reflection criticises your weakest points, tearing you down, what does it say and how do you find the strength to outpace it? Can the others hear it?
- Your reflection praises you, focusing on the good things you've done, does it help you escape the tunnel? Can the others hear it?
-There is something wrong with your reflection, it seems to talk little sense and speaks about things you only vaguely remember in dreams. This makes for a surreal experience and can be quite frightening, do the others see it too?
- Your reflection is still and silent, it follows you but says nothing at all, merely watches you, what do you do? Does it unsettle you? Do you feel like it is supporting you?

gaia_crown [ Final Day - The Queen’s Throne Room. ]
gaia_angelright If you fail at any point here you must wait another day before you can roll again (unless specifically stated otherwise)

The red queen’s throne room is enormous and is linked to a vast network of guarded rooms and corridors, at the end of these rooms is the treasure room where the valuable and often stolen treasures are stowed away by the selfish queen.

gaia_angelright Success means you can move onto rolling an artifact, Safe means if you fill in an rp post you can roll again, a free re-roll can simply be immediately re-rolled if you wish. Fail means you must wait 24 hours to roll again.

1d10
Quote:
1 - You are almost caught by the guards on the way to the treasure room, however they get sidetracked by a voice from down the hallway. It sounds familiar somehow. - Re-roll without cooldown
2 - You all successfully make it to the treasure room through a combination of stealth and sheer dumb luck - Success
3 - You find a place to hide until nightfall in a quiet and rarely visited room on the upper floors - Safe
4 - Success
5 - You find a banquet hall where you have some food to eat, no one else is here and it's a safe place to hide for the day - Safe
6 - You stumble upon an attic filled with strange toys, magical objects and concerningly, guillotines. You opt to hide there for the night - Safe
7 - OFF WITH THEIR HEADS, the group find themselves caught by the red queen and only narrowly escape with their heads intact, they need to wait before they can even think of trying again -Fail
8 - Success
9 - You find yourself cornered by a group of playing card guards, they turn you in and you are sent away from the castle. Unless you successfully helped them paint the roses red, in which case, they turn a blind eye- Fail or (if you did the roses red quest) a free no-cooldown reroll.
10 - You get lost on the way to the treasure room and need to come back the next day with a better idea about where the hell you are going - Fail

"Well. I did not expect to end back here quite so soon."

Toki, slightly more confident, walks down the same path as before. She says "same", but it seems just a bit different from the last time. The same plants, but in different shapes and colors. The same animals, but with different eyes (but that seem to watch you with the same vaguely threatening intensity). The same towering trees (are they just the tiniest bit darker? Are they leaning in just a little bit closer to you?).

"This is starting to feel ridiculous. I need to start bringing protective charms. Or a knife. Or a gun."

Beka was nothing if not a loyal horseman. He had spent years in the Sahara itself and the cities and towns on its outskirts, gathering and spreading fear without killing, despite the fact that he had really really wanted to sometimes. Now he was back at the tower, trying on human children's costumes just to 'see how they felt' and dreaming of cabins that wanted to lobotomize him instead. It certainly wasn't ideal, but he had been ordered to stay, and now... Well, knowing that his family was gone had kind of made living the life of an adventurer seem a lot less fun.

He awoke in a dim forest this time, curled in a little ball at the base of a tree, and he knew it was another dream almost immediately, not because of the weird animals and plants, but because he heard a voice a short distance away. He had never dreamed of actual people until the dream that had called him home, and all the ones since where he hadn't been alone had been the same.

"I have none of those things, but I do have this," Beka said, stepping out of the trees. A long chain materialized around his neck, a spike as long as one of his hands hanging from one end, and an iron ball from the other. He yawned.

"Oh my. That certainly is impressive."

Toki has long ago stopped questioning where she is and who she meets. It seems futile, and anyway, exploring unknown places is exciting in and of itself. ...Also, this person is small and cute and not attacking, so it is fine. This is fine. She walks a little bit closer, peering at the weapon. It is fantastic. She should really get her own.

"We should travel together! Come, come. The last time I was here, this place had treasure. I wonder if it is still there. We should find out."

She takes some time to look around. Just like last time, there's only one well-trodden path ahead. And just like last time, it leads directly into a mushroom patch. She tries to walk past the patch, and is greeted by a gigantic wall of thorns and bramble. It's a little ridiculous. She's reminded of video games where a player only gets the illusion of choice...but anyway.

"Unfortunately, I think we will not be able to pass until we eat a mushroom. Well, perhaps it will not be so bad! I think some of them are quite benign. I shall just...pick one at random..."

She looks closely at the mushrooms, trying to decide which one looks particularly not-terrible.

He could already tell she wasn't human, and anyway, attacking people in dreams seemed like a distinct waste of time. It was why he hadn't bothered with the hunters and why he wasn't aiming for threatening now. He could do Traveling Companion, even if it was marred by downturned brows and tiny, clenched fists. Thankfully, it seemed she had been here before and he wanted out as quickly as possible. It made being pleasant that much easier.

Beka nodded an acknowledgment of his weapon's impressiveness as it popped back to wherever it went when he wasn't using it. "Is this a regular occurrence for you? Eating random... forest fungus?" He was not looking forward to it at all. "Are you certain it's the only way forward?"

"I, ah...I would not say common, but it certainly is more times than I would have expected in my lifetime. Fortunately, these seem to be edible!"

Toki crouches down, squinting at the mushrooms. Why are they all so different?

"I did try to get past that wall of thorns, but...well, I am still here. Perhaps you could cut it! Or...bludgeon it. You may have better luck than I did--but be careful, hmm? These forest plants look a little...unnerving. I feel like they're watching us. I mean, they are probably not, but...uh..."

She still doesn't want to wander too close to them.

Beka shrugged. He supposed he could give violence a shot. Once again his weapon appeared, in his hands this time, and he paced calmly over to a patch of thorns blocking their path before he abruptly began hacking at them. It didn't go well. The horseman returned to Toki's side, his forearms coated in a thin layer of purple goo.

"They grew back as fast as I could get rid of them. Someone is definitely watching and probably laughing." He eyed one of the
EAT ME signs, pointing at it with a slimy finger. "No. You eat me."

Toki watches the small(ish) creature whale away at the tall shrubbery blocking their path. It is impressive! ...And a little horrifying. She watches the plants bleed purple slime with no small level of discomfort, and a growing sense of irritating with this ridiculous forest and it's unnecessary hurdles.

All this time and all these strange events, and she still hadn't enough foresight to bring a pack of matches or something. Well! You learn something new every day. She rushes over to her companion, digging up a small face towel from somewhere inside her voluminous sleeves and handing it over.

"Here, here, perhaps this will help. Your effort was truly commendable! If someone is watching, I certainly hope they end up STRANGLING THEMSELVES WITH THEIR ACCURSED PLANTS. Yes, I do wish they would STOP MAKING LIFE SO HARD FOR UNSUSPECTING VISITORS and just CHOKE AND DIE ON THEIR PRECIOUS PURPLE SLIME."

She waits. There is no response. It is hardly gratifying. Giving up, she sighs and walks back to the mushrooms, which look just as unappetizing as they did a moment ago So much for small miracles.

"Perhaps I will just eat one. Here. This one looks a little like a vegetable. It should be safe, right? No fuzz, no strange spots, no odd colors--well, green is quite odd for a mushroom, but I suppose I have eaten worse things."

She plucks it out of the ground, and it snaps off a little too easily (does it sound...fizzy? It must be her imagination). Eyeing it with growing suspicion, she pops it into her mouth and starts chewing.

"Hmm? Hmmmm? It tastes like fruit juice! Why, this is not so bad! Well, except for the inherent issues in eating a fungi that tastes like fruit juice. But if you overlook that, it is far more palatable than I first imagined--oh."

She breathes out a cloud of white smoke, and she can just make out figures in it. They're moving, and talking, and she squints her eyes, trying to make out just what on earth it is she's looking at--

"Oh my! This is prom! Why, what a recent event. Was it not just some weeks ago? I was still deciding whether to join as a student, you know. Were you there? I must have missed you. It is such a pity. It would have been nice to take your photo. Well, it is not too bad! There will be plenty of opportunities, I am sure."

"Thank you."

He said it after staring at the towel for a little too long, amusement creeping up on him in the face of the girl's rant. He wiped at his arms, removing most of the slime minus what was under his nails and on his clothing. Trailing after her at a short distance, he watched her choose a mushroom and chew it up before breathing out a smoky diorama. Little foggy figures danced and chatted, and Beka was reminded of the Famine functions he'd attended once upon a time. Less formal, but ultimately the same. Young people doing young people things. By the estimation of many he was still young, but he knew he had already outlived this towel-wielding child by at least six or seven of her lifetimes. Not that it mattered, though it did make his reluctance to suck down a simple mushroom seem rather foolish. Well, that settled it then. Beka barely paid attention as he retrieved one of his own, only noting that it was blue as he stuffed it into his mouth.

If the color hadn't already given it away for him, he could tell immediately that they hadn't chosen the same type by the taste. His evoked memories of standing in a downpour, face turned toward the sky and mouth open to catch the storm. It was chilly, exciting, fun... until he swallowed.

His visions were somehow simultaneously more sharp and more vague than her pleasant recollections of prom, staccato bursts of color and light occasionally interspersed with the dull sounds of fists and plaintive wails. Names as well, perhaps. These cries in particular seemed to affect Beka more than any of the others, two bright, splotchy spots of pink spattering his cheekbones after a few moments of listening to them. All in all, the entire outburst didn't last more than five or six seconds. He kept his fists tightly clenched the entire time.

"I was not at Amityville's prom," he said once the sounds had disappeared. His bright flush began to fade as well, especially when he raised a hand and scrubbed his knuckles across his cheeks. "I am a horseman. It would have been... awkward." He cleared his throat, his voice still low but now less strained. "Beka." He held out his hand.

Oh dear. That appears to be a particularly bad memory. Toki cringes at the wailing sounds, averting her eyes to give her travelling companion some privacy, and studies the mushrooms instead. Perhaps she should bring some back to dissect...she waits until the sounds have stopped and the smoke has cleared to stand back up, and jumps at the chance to move away from the subject of trippy mushrooms and the unwanted memories they bring back.

"Hello, hello! I am Toki! I am a student at Amity, although currently I suppose I am merely lost. And you are a horseman! How fortuitous. I have actually never met a horseman before. You do not generally spend time on school grounds."

She grabs his hand and shakes it. Enthusiastically.

"You should visit the next prom! There is free food. And people. Well, the people are not free. Anyway, we can go together. It will not be awkward if you go with friends, and--well would you look at that."

The giant wall of plants blocking their way has mysteriously, infuriatingly disappeared. Well. How about that. She doesn't know whether to be relieved or furious.

"I suppose we should continue on. There is only one path, after all. It is fairly ridiculous."

She gives the empty space where the blockade used to be a rather bitter glare, and tries very hard to remember that there is treasure at the end of this quest.

"Hm." He looked to where the vines and thorns had been moments before with curiosity, wondering how a bunch of plants had come to care whether or not a pair of fear-based creatures ate a couple of mushrooms. Maybe the Alchemists knew how all of this worked, but he doubted he would ever find a reason to ask them.

"I haven't spoken with any students either," Beka admitted. He had been out in the human world for years, and before that... before that he had been foolish. Sheltered. Unaware of how cruel the world could be. And now he was getting invited to a school dance.

"I suppose I'll consider it," he said, shifting his weight before suddenly darting forward past the spot where the brambles had been. Toki might have wanted treasure, but Beka just wanted to get back home.

"Yes, consider it! I hope you will join me for the next school event. It is free, after all. ...I am not actually sure why it is free. Well! School fees must go somewhere, hmm?"

Toki rushes down the path, eager to get through this uncomfortably odd forest and back to her dorm. The sooner the better. She has the feeling that she might just get eaten if she lingers too long here.

"Ugh, what is this path?! Watch out for the thorns. Don't fall behind! Ow, these things certainly sting--hmm?"

CATERPILLAR THING

"Who are you?" Seems like a rather rude and somewhat hypocritical question coming from a giant, sentient, pipe-smoking caterpillar, but she supposes that in this forest, she is the strange one.

"I am Toki! I am a student at Amity. Have you heard of it? No, I suppose not. Well, one can never hope to explore the entire world in one's lifetime. And that is a rather odd question for you to ask. Do you mind if I take a quick photo--no? Well. You would think that someone asking these kind of personal questions would be more amenable to other people's requests, but I suppose we all have our flaws. Anyway. I enjoy photography, and handicrafts, and food. ...Perhaps not mushrooms, anymore. But other food. Has that answered your question? Goodness. The animals here are so nosy."

With that, she marches on past it, stopping only when it offers her a mushroom (what did she just say about mushrooms? Honestly) for her troubles.

"Bekaaaa! Are you still there? Did you perhaps go down a different path?"

He thought he was following Toki fairly diligently, but all it took was one glance away from the ghoul's sunset hair for her voice to fade to nothing and for him to find he was alone. A blurry but soothing beach stretched ahead of him, sandy and sunny just how he liked it, and he was quickly reminded of the time he'd spent in the Sahara, the time...

...when...

...he didn't remember. The sun overhead was oppressive, not soothing at all, and it crushed him to the ground like a vise, the air leaving his lungs as he knelt in the sand. He didn't need air, he was a...

...horse m a n...

...no, he was an oyster...

...and he always had been.

The oyster sank into the sand, his oncoming nap feeling like just about the Best Thing Ever right now, but sleep didn't come, not before he felt the muffled vibrations of a pair of incoming boots. The man who wore them was very large, much larger than the oyster, and when he looked up, all he saw was red plaid and an axe. There was a wet, shuffling sound, and the carpenter turned as though he was listening to someone, but the oyster couldn't understand what was going on, not until the sharp, shiny axe swung toward him and cleaved him in two.

He no longer had a mouth to scream, but he tried anyway.

Half of the oyster's body flopped within visual range of his killer, the other spinning away until his eye could make out another figure, the one the carpenter had been speaking to. It was a walrus in a suit, and for a moment the oyster tried to say what in the hell is this? but he didn't because he was an oyster. And he always had been.

The walrus leaned in, slurped the half-an-oyster into its mouth, and bit down.

Beka sat up with a sharp gasp, his chest heaving as he caught his breath. There was no carpenter, no walrus, and he certainly wasn't a damned oyster. He pushed himself to his feet and followed the sound of the pixiu's voice again, still a little wide eyed when he found her.

"I'm here. I went... that way." He gestured vaguely behind him. "It wasn't pleasant."

"Are you alright? Here, let us continue together! Apparently it's...uh...rather dangerous to split up."

The path changes rather abruptly from "nightmare forest" to "croquette lawn". Toki can see a bunch of somewhat odd-looking people in the distance...

"Are those...card people? Look, they're painting something! Heeey! Hey, do you need any help?"

She walks over, and it turns out she's a fantastic flower-painter. Who knew? Not her, that's for sure.

"Beka! Do you want to try? I am not quite sure why they are painting perfectly acceptable white flowers, but it's fun!"

Very dangerous to split up. Mmhm. Indeed.

Beka kept an even closer eye on his companion as they moved on, only taking his eyes off of her when they reached the card people.

Card people. Okay.

Without a word, he picked up a brush and got to work, wondering how this was going to help him get back to the tower, but assuming Toki had some sort of inside knowledge. He was surprised to find himself enjoying this, and with his first flower painted rather immaculately, he turned to her.

"Fun. Yes." He held it up for her to see. It seemed that if he ever found himself unwilling to murder humans, he had a fallback career.
