General Information
The large stone cavern with the tiled floor and large yellow smiley face is likely familiar to at least several trainees, and may even feature in a few nightmares from time to time. Welcome to Deathsweeper, the training course that may only be attempted via c-type golem, and often acts as a testing ground for the Life Division's more painful creations. Stealth and detecting imminent danger are vital for Death Hunters and anyone who has to spend extended amounts of time near Caelius. The Deathsweeper chamber is full of hidden traps that only the finest of survival instincts can survive unscathed.

If you fail: you get to once again relive the sensation of dying. Painfully and sometimes quite strangely.

If you win: you have survived stepping 5 tiles into the room. Anything further is purely for peen and bragging rights.

    Mechanics
  • roll 1 d10
  • check for hp loss and death
  • decide whether or not to use your bonuses
  • if you survive, repeat.
  • roll list: the traps are ICly constantly changing, so feel free to get creative as to what exactly those traps are!
  • -50% HP is off your full HP, so if you hit -50% twice, then you are 100% KO'd

    01. horrible death
    02. - 50% HP
    03. live
    04. live
    05. - 50% HP
    06. - 50% HP
    07. horrible death
    08. - 50% HP
    09. live
    10. horrible death

    Bonus Mechanics
  • This bonus is consumable.
  • All participants get a flag, this flag will allow your character to notice something about the area they're stepping into. OOCly this means you can adjust your rolled number, up or down, by one point. Instinctive moves are used in the same manner as flags. These are stackable, so if you have 1 flag + 1 instinctive move, you can use them up in order to adjust your roll by two.

(If you roll a 1, you may not move your number down to 0, -1, or 10. And 10 cannot be adjusted to 1 or 11.)

  • Trainees: 1 flag
  • Death Trainees: 1 flag + 1 instinctive move
  • Hunters: 1 flag + 1 instinctive move
  • Death Hunters: 1 flag + 2 instinctive moves

Of all the available training courses, Terry opted to go solo on the Death course. Not because he was worried about making a fool of himself in front of other people, although that was always a very good go to excuse, but because he felt he should embody the core idea of the division even if he himself wasn't a member of it.

And besides, Agata crooned, You're never truly alone. Not while you're mine.

There was a sensation of being enveloped, of a long slender form wrapping around him in a cold but not entirely unpleasant embrace. He lightly touched the bracelet of coral on his wrist in response, despite knowing that Agata really couldn't feel anything when he brushed fingers along the carved teeth.

Breathing in deep, Terry got himself into a Type C golem. It was an unusual feeling, but it was fascinating and it made him consider focusing more on these constructs when the opportunity was available.

Distracted, his first step cut his golem's HP in half.

Terry wasn't sure what had happened. He was sure that he'd only taken one step but now for some reason he was on his back, smoke in his eyes, and a ringing in his ears. He also got the distinct impression that had this course been done with just his FEAR shield, he would have still lost at least a leg.

Are you alright? Agata's voice cut through the intense static, but Terry could barely make out the rest of her words. It was more than concerning especially when he considered the fact that she was in his head. But that might just be a side effect of sorts from being in a golem?

"I think I am?" he answered, though the groggy tone was not very reassuring to his weapon bond.

Carefully, he got up and tried to reorient himself and remember what spot it was that he had already stepped on before taking his second step.

Instinct had Terry bracing himself for more pain and squeezing his eyes shut in anticipation. Even though he knew that the waiting was what truly made things worse, he couldn't help himself. Several seconds passed but it felt like eons to the life trainee. Until finally he dared to risk a peek and found nothing was coming for him, nothing was swinging or penduluming its way towards him, hell, there weren't any wall-mounted weapons springing out of hidden panels warming up to riddle him with bullets or laser fire.

Cautiously, Terry opened both his eyes but remained motionless. Maybe whatever fate the tile he stepped on was waiting for, it might have been motion sensitive? He could stand not moving for a bit longer just to be sure.

It was only when Agata suggested he tilt his head slightly and when Terry did so that the life trainee concluded that he had stepped on a safe tile.

Not wanting to lower his guard, because books, anime, and television shows always insist that it's when the protag lowers their guard does the worst possible thing to happen can and will happen. Of course, Terry still somewhat viewed himself as the supporting character to the main protag even if it was his own life story, which meant he was never allowed to lower his guard.

Seriously, what is it with all those stories where the supporting character always got killed off in messy gruesome ways?

You will have to review those moments, Agata suggested because she was curious to see them for herself.

If my wallet allows for me to runic my laptop, we'll binge marathon some, he promised her.

As he was about to put his foot down, he hesitated and thought about his luck. Something didn't feel right about the next tile, which was why he placed a flag on it. And nothing bad happened.

This was it. The last step he needed to make in order to pass this training course. While Terry knew, objectively, that should he fail, he could easily just retake the course for as many times as necessary. It wasn't as if there was a golem count limit or anything of the sort.

Objectively speaking, passing was simply inevitable on Deus. It was for something that was needed, something that one did over and over again until they got it. Failure should not have any sort of social stigma attached to it.

That was all good and well but despite all of Terry's to indicate a rather stoic, bland, beta-male image, he was still human and still just wanted to do well. He was just talking himself up and assuring himself that there would be no pointed laughter or blatant displays of disappointment. Of course that also mean success and triumph are no big deals and that it shouldn't be lauded.

With that in mind, he took the fifth step and was informed that he passed the course. Oh good. Now he had to fill in a form to be granted runic access.
