Keionx pondered over the tracks in the forest loam. Having grown up in Busthind, Keionx was not very familiar with the forest hunts.

She looked up at the sound of a hunting horn, feeling her blood burn in response. In another life, maybe she would have been a hunter. After all, the prey were lawbreakers. Criminals. Her heroic duty would have been to stop them from roaming free and causing harm to others.

However, her life had taken a different path, and on this path, her heroic duty meant something different. She was a lawbreaker herself, now, and with the Initiative she had learned just how cruel and unfair the hunts truly were. She was a hero. She was here to help those who fled from the horns. She had become a protector of the prey. A harrier of the hunter. Hunted, perhaps, herself.

She stood, adjusting her costume. For this special patrol, she had put on an outfit reminiscent of the nights she would patrol with the Sailor Scouts - an armored suit, built more for speed than protection, a mask to hide her face, a cape for drama, and a lack of symbol to give her an air of mystery. She put a hand to the sword at her waist as she followed the tracks.

They were fresh. The troll that was being hunted was near. She would have to be careful - to watch from a distance before approaching. That was what she had been advised to do... to give them a chance, but to be aware that they might be dangerous, too.

Rastin Morden

Ever since he was a child, Rastin had lived with the sound of that horn. It used to frighten him when he was smaller and gradually became more of a nuisance as he grew. Blaring out at any time with seemingly no reason, it eventually made him curious. Being sheltered growing up had it's pitfalls in terms of knowledge, so when his thoughts got the better of him, he decided it was time to research it.

It's purpose, however, only served to appall him.

A hunter's horn, for criminals. The forest he'd made his home in so many years ago was also a place for bloodshed and murder for sport. It was a thought that made him bite his lips and blood boil. He could understand hunting animals for fun; that was a necessary evil of society for food, clothing, and occasional relaxation, but hunting other trolls? He could think of no good reason for that, even if someone were a criminal. There were far more humane punishments to choose from. Why didn't anyone ever think to use those?

Knowing this now, Rastin soon found it increasingly difficult to ignore the horn when he heard it. Someone was out there, being hunted like dinner meat, and he was standing inside his safe, warm home as though it didn't matter. A life would be stamped out, for reasons unknown to him, and for all he knew they could be hiding right outside his door. The thought of this burned him inside, but out of self-service and preservation, he stayed.

Then, one day, while rinsing one of his dishes, the teenager found himself gripping the counter at the sound of it, his heartbeat ringing in his ears. He had to do something, how could he continue to stay here and let this go on? There could be innocent lives out there, ones caught up in this sinister game with nowhere to hide. He bit at his lip, cursed at himself, and set up a plan.

He'd don a ratty gray cloak, anonymous in hue, and skulk through the woods. If he happened upon one of the hunted, he'd convince them to follow him and harbor them. Any injuries could heal, escape routes could be planned, and innocent lives would be saved. He'd use his lantern to guide them, be a beacon of safety, and satisfy his conscience once and for all.

The first night he'd decided to start was a calm one, but judging by fresh tracks and the closeness of the horn alone, he knew he had to remain alert. His heart pounded against his chest as he crouched, scythe drawn and lantern dimmed, and waited for any sign of someone in need of help.

Keionx followed the tracks until she caught a glimpse of their maker - a yellowblood, maybe a sweep younger than her. Their clothes were torn, small scratches with bright blood leaking through them, and they huddled fearfully against a tree. She ducked behind a bush before they could see her, there to observe. They were breathing heavily, desperate for air. She knew that one could only run so far for so long before ones breath gave way and ones muscles began to burn. She had trained long and hard in the arduous slopes of busthind, under a lusus who made it his never-ending duty to ensure that she became strong. This troll, this... barely not-a-child... clearly hadn't had that, but then, she didn't know how far they had run. Or for how long.

A horn sounded again, closer.

It was doubtful that this troll was a serious, terrifying, horrible criminal. Thus, they needed her help. And fast.

She emerged from her hiding place and approached them. "Tis all right, I'm here to..." The yellowbloods's eyes grew wide.

And they screamed and ran.

Rastin's eyes flicked upwards. A scream that close by, followed by the horn, that could only mean one thing. He had to act fast.

The purpleblood scurried from his hiding place, keeping himself in line with the trees as much as possible, and rushed about like a worried father. Where were they? They couldn't be too far. He could hear rustling growing closer and the sound of hurried footsteps.

Then, the face of a terrified child appeared before him, catching him off guard. He swallowed and stepped forward.

"H-hello, listen to me, I live close by." He began, approaching them slowly. "I can hide you, help you heal-"

Unfortunately, the horn's deafening sound cut through his words, and the yellowblood quickly took off running again. Frazzled, Rastin flailed and reached out for them, only to miss them by the edge of their collar.

"Wait! You have no idea where you're going!" He called, before looking down and muttering. "This is going to be harder than I thought..."

Keionx ran after the young yellowblood, stopping when she saw another figure come out and try to catch them. In the dim light of the nighttime woods, she did not recognize them. She walked into their view, drawing her sword, tense and ready to fight if needed.

"You!" she said, with apparent authority, brandishing her sword,Who art thou?"

He wasn't wearing any colors, so he could well be a rebel in disguise. Her current outfit was recognizable by those in the Swamp - not so different from her Xionek outfit, really - and if so, then she had an ally.

But if he was a resident out at night, he should not be in the path of the hunt. She would want to escort him away from that danger for many reasons.

And if he was a hunter...

"Identify thyself! Now!"

Rastin froze. Oh no, just his luck. His grip tightened against his scythe as the figure came into view. A sword wielder, a loud one at that. How the hunters hadn't heard either of them by now was an utter mystery to him.

Instinct told him to step back, make an excuse, convince the other that he meant no harm. However, logic quickly set in. He couldn't just go blathering about how he was trying to help that Yellowblood, what if they were a hunter? He'd get himself slashed to bits! ... It seemed he'd have to lower himself down to a level beneath himself.

"My identity will remain anonymous as long as I'm still standing!" He shouted, last minute hesitation in his eyes.

Then, raising his scythe up over his head, he took a breath and rushed forward, aiming to sweep low and strike Kei's legs.

Keionx hissed a curse under her breath as he attacked. Not friend, then, but foe. Hopes for an alliance dashed, she brought up her shield - too late. His scythe caught her legs, and she was lucky to jump back before she lost them outright. As it was, orange blood leaked steadily out onto the ground from a cut on her leg. So much for hemoanonymous, though that didn't matter in this disguise.

She didn't have time to think on what he'd said - or what she'd said - this was a fight. She needed to stop him from pursuing the yellowblood, and buy the child time to escape. She needed to survive. She lunged, swinging her sword in an arc meant as much to make him move as to slice him...

The moment he'd made the hit, Rastin leaped backward and clutched his scythe as though he'd committed a crime. Oh ********, oh <********>, how could he have done something so low? ... Wait. Why was he doing this again?

Oh, the Yellowblood and his morals, right.

"Holy f-!" He squeaked, hopping out of the way as Kei lunged to slice him. His eyes caught a glimpse of the orangeblood he'd drawn from her and, for a moment, questioned why an orangeblood would become a hunter. However, his protective instincts took over.

He swung his scythe across his chest and down, aiming slightly higher than where he'd hit before. If he could just get her down, he could run after that child and get them to safety.

Keionx saw him strike again and brought her shield down to block, grunting with effort as she felt the strike reverberate with a clang of metal... but that wasn't all she did.

She lifted her shield back to her chest and surged foward from behind it, intending to ram her opponent down. A shield, after all, could be as much a weapon as a tool for defense.

If she knocked him down, she could run after the child, or divert the hunt. Or finish off her foe, of course, though it wasn't that heroic to do so.

The firm clang of his scythe against the shield sent a vibrating twang of pain up Rastin's arm, causing him to flinch. AUGH, that was going to be sore tomorrow.

Then, the shield came slamming down.

The wind was knocked straight out of him and he skidded, semi-crouched, backward. By some miracle he managed to keep his feet planted and dug in, but oh was he going to regret this later. Right now, all he wanted to do was get this over with, and as soon as possible.

He gasped, leered at her, and swung his scythe toward her side. It wasn't with as much force as he would have hoped, but being as winded as he was, at least it was something.

Keionx had forgotten about the reach on a scythe - she should have payed more attention to Vremea's fighting style. Fortunately, the resulting wound wasn't deep, but she knew that, if her father was in the swamp, he would give her hell when she got back.

She dodged away, regrouping. This troll was tricky. Much like her student... she would have to be careful.

Rastin recoiled from his swing and watched, breath panting, as she dodged away. It seemed they both needed a moment to think about what they were doing, but was there really time for that? He bit his lip, awkwardly ambled toward her, and... Rather weakly waved the tip of his scythe at her.

"This... This sucks." He heaved, temporarily forgetting his eloquence. "W-why can't you just... Go back to where you came from...?"

Keionx blocked the hit with a gauntletted arm. Tricky, yes, but they were, perhaps, not very practiced in the art of battle. Or trained as she was.

Still, that shield thrust had been fatiguing - she breathed heavily, watching him. Had she miscalculated? Had she misunderstood something?

"I cannot." she said, steadying her stance, "Mine duty remains - Nothing shall stand in the way of it.

Rastin, trying to keep himself from clutching his stomach, repeated the weak jabbing motion out of pure frustration and exhaustion. He was certain that he looked pathetic there, heaving and sweating, and certainly inexperienced. Surely it wasn't his fault that he was scared to fight for all these years...

Well, actually, it was. He was trying to make excuses where none could be made. He shook his head at himself.

"Your... Duty?" He mustered, cocking a brow toward her and breathing. "Killing defenseless children is your duty?"
