Every time he thought he left the raven in the dust, the ghostly thing would just be there, sitting on a branch ahead of him. Every. Single. Time. If Zei hadn't been subjected to the annoyances of trying to get away from his parents (he was SO old enough to explore a little one his own, Aveshar or no), he'd say that his familiar was the most frustrating thing in the universe. Second, maybe, by a hair's breadth.

Honestly, he wasn't sure how they had fallen into this... companionship of sorts. Adamant, his raven was from the scary Solace who belonged to the strange triwing mare and the equally scary Moonshadow, who belonged to his niece. Who was Aveshar's daughter. Who was going to try and kill them all one day. Why? Because he was crazy, and obviously the bird was just as crazy.

Fixing one violet eye on the pale bird, he snorted, shaking his head hard to either side. The bird made no sense to him. Adamant kept trying to get him to meet Kalona's, or even skinwalkers, when he ventured out on his own. And he knew better, okay? Aveshar was bad enough, why did he have to meet more evil ponies? Just to prove that they were evil as they tried to eat him? Was that the bird's game, to get Zei killed?

To say they had trust issues was an understatement. Despite that, the raven was loyal. Zei hadn't seen him flying off to report to Keshani what they were up too. Not that were really up to anything, but it was a nice thing. That despite where he came from, Adamant seemed like he might grow into being a good familiar. Maybe. One day. If he stopped trying to lead Zei to his death.

Rather than pass under Adamant and risk getting droppings... well, dropped on him, Zei swerved down a side path he hadn't really been interested in before. The path was well lit and wide enough for two grown stallions to walk side by side. Zei didn't know where it led, but it was bright ahead, and it was warm, the sun just cresting the trees in it's daily climb.

And he wasn't going to let his weird familiar ruin a perfectly good day.

Adamant flicked his wings in a slight huff, glowing orbs following the young stallion. If he had a face like Zei's, he was sure he would be smiling. Earlier, while he was supposed to be acting as a lookout as Zei planned his escape, he had spied a lone Kalona male not too far out of the herd territory. It didn't take much to lead him toward the large purple stallion with just his presence, which seemed to annoy the colt beyond reason.

Of course, even with his eyes, he could not tell if the Kalona he was leading his bonded towards was friendly or dangerous. He would find out within moments of their meeting, he assumed. Ada kept a sharp eye on both his bonded and all the possible escape routes that he would pick if it turned out that this stallion was evil and tried to eat them. Of course, it would only enforce Zei's false assumption that all Kalona were evil, all Unicorns were good, all Skinwalkers were evil, all Angeni were good. It was a naive way of looking at the world, and frankly, it was a dangerous notion to hold. Ada wanted his colt to see that, one way or another.

Zeibekiko wondered, for a fleeting moment, why Adamant was so determined to be in front of him today. Normally, he would fly along side, making snide comments until Zei tried to rush off. Or bite him. It never worked, either way. Though from the amount of squawking, you'd have thought he had actually bitten him. Like he wanted ghost pale feathers in his mouth.

Shaking the thought out of his head, he continued forward, hearing the near silent beat of Adamant's wings as he rounded a curve in the path, spilling him into a beautiful glade. A stream ran through it, bright and clear, a bubble of music that made him want to dance along. He was entranced by the stream that he didn't pay attention to anything else, or the possibility that there could be anyone else there.

Adamant settled himself on a branch nearby, watching the colt be distracted by the song of the stream, and waited.

The snow was finally gone, thank Kalona. The sight of a raven and the warm sun rising gave him hope, even if the raven was starkly white against the muted buds of the reviving trees. He wasn't sure if that was some sort of good or bad omen. Svadilfari stretched as he headed towards the sound of the stream, feeling the dappled sun warm his coat. Winter had locked him up, blinded him and left him feeling rather antsy. He was very tired of winter, of snow, of white lightness. Spring was on the horizon and he could taste it in the air. Or was that pollen?

Seeing only in muted tones was quiet a bore. It made it hard to find fresh foods that wouldn't run right through him, as most of the berries and fruits were no where near ripe. But his ears and nose worked perfect, and the smell of another soquili was light in the air.

Normally, he would make an effort to steer clear of others as his mood varied with each encounter but his thirst was great and the stream was singing. His few encounters weren't so terrible, he thought. Svadilfari met a beautiful mare and a stupid goat, and those meetings were rather interesting, if not enjoyable. It was better than venturing the mountain tops he had once called home, cold and blindingly white.

The thought white raven hadn't bothered him till now, as it fluttered back into the clearing, looking to him and then away. Svadilfari had seen creatures and birds of many colors, most left the area when he arrived, but this bird seemed to be watching him. It was unsettling. He had met his fair share of skin-walkers, most being canines and felines, but he had heard of bird skin-walkers so he wasn't taking his chances.

Never letting the bird out of his sight, he entered the glade, heading for the stream. And there was the soquili he smelled, with its dark mane and small, light colored body. Usdia, perhaps, he had met a few but it wasn't stout and fat and hadn't immediately starting asking him a hundred questions.

It was a foal, someone's pride and joy. A bad situation.

Svadilfari had no desire to fight his parents, or an entire herd for that matter. So, he set his mind to scaring the foal off. Hopefully, a few growls would send the little one running and he could quench his thirst. Of course, he would have to run off himself because he wasn't interested in a mob of soquili on his tail.

Spreading his wings, he approached the stream. Svadilfari stomped and huffed, baring his fangs. His tail flicked with impatience and he said, "Go home little one."

Zeibekiko pranced to the stream, looking down at the clear water, wondering if it was as cold and clear as it looked, or it it had hidden flavor, something dark tainting the water upstream and out of sight. Zei didn't think there would be, the water was visibly perfect.

He was a little wary, though, because Adamant hadn't followed him into the clearing, and the raven could at least be counted on to pester him to death at all times, unless he was playing some sort of game. Probably taught to him the moment he hatched, given where he came from. So, Zei did not drink, wondering if it was a plot to kill him, and his eyes flicked around, narrowing when they fell on his raven. He was always suspicious of Adamant's motives. Zei knew he couldn't trust him. Sometimes, though, it was a nice thought to think that Adamant was his, on his side, his friend. But such thoughts were fleeting.

Like now. Now, it was very very fleeting.

At the first growl, Zei jumped and spun around. A Kalona! He was coming for him, wings spread, teeth bared. For a moment, Zei was nothing except afraid, wanting to run for his life, and curse his Raven for putting him in this situation. But there was no time to do much of anything other than squeak when the Kalona spoke to him, and to back away, the cold bite of water swirling around his legs.

It made him focus, violet eyes taking in the larger stallion's appearance. A true Kalona, down to the horns, wings and tail, and a horrible expression. Why was it that they never smiled? Still, though there were similarities between this Kalona and his brother, after that first surge of fear, the dread he felt at the sight of Aveshar did not come.

This was not Aveshar, this was not his enemy. Well, he did consider all evil things his enemy, but while he knew what it was to fear, he knew what it was to be brave too.

So when the Kalona spoke, the picture of anger and impatience, like he would just swat Zei out of his way. Well, maybe Zei had a different idea.

It would be good practice. And there was no one who would get hurt if he failed. Except maybe himself, but he could live with that. Probably.

Shifting his hooves so that he was stable, dug in so that even a strong shove would only move him a little, Zeibekiko lowered his head and glared up at the Kalona, feeling the song of his herd swell in his heart. Maybe protecting a river was a simple, somewhat silly thing, but it was a start. This would be his start.

"You go home. I was here first." Zei couldn't make himself sound scary, so he didn't try, letting his voice drift lightly across the space between them.

Adamant sat silent on his perch, head tilted to the side, watching his young bonded take a defensive stance against the Kalona. Well, this was better than him bolting for the woods at the first sign of the big, bad Kalona. He shifted a few inches on the branch, flaring his wings for balance, and warning. He didn't know if the Kalona would see it as such, but he would enter the fray on the side of his bonded, if the stallion pursued a violent course.
