These kin - a kiokote buck and a zikwa - are based on iconic characters from platformer video games, where you must traverse fantasy lands to complete quests and win glory. So it's only fitting that these kin can only be won after you undergo a quest of your own...

---

This is a choose your own adventure event, where your kin will be presented with branching decisions and attempt to reach a goal. Each day you must write a short roleplay post where you make a decision, accompanied by a dice roll that will help determine how well you perform on your branch. You may opt to post more often than this if you'd like. Posting a total of 500 words in the choose your own adventure thread will qualify you for a roleplay credit for legendary ascension; having significant back and forth interaction with another kin will allow the thread to be counted as a PRP rather than a solo. Choices must be made daily, and the CYOA will conclude on March 1st, 2017.

Unlike some other CYOAs, this is not a contest purely for the last people standing. Your kin will have 10 HP to lose over the course of the event, which means that picking a "bad" decision won't mean the end of the game for you. As your kin adventures, fireflies will flock towards them. At the end of the CYOA, whichever survivors have accumulated the most fireflies will attract the attention of one of the two kin.

If you miss a day, you will lose 5 HP and gain 0 firefly followers. This means that you can join in even if you miss the first day, but you will be at a slight disadvantage. However, we encourage you to participate just for the roleplay experience!

This event is a shared dream, although your kin may or may not be conscious of that fact (since they are clearly not in the swamp, it's much more obvious for kin who are swamp-dwellers, but sometimes it's hard to think straight in a dream...). Kin who die in the dream/CYOA will wake up.

DAY ONE
The world is twilight-colored, warm, and musty. You look up and see a thick canopy of leaves and vines, but no water at your feet. You must be somewhere far from home. But what are you doing here? Ah, yes - the sacs - or eggs - or even tiny, blind lambs. Something dangerous has stolen a clutch you've been looking after, whether it's because they're yours or your tribe's or because you just found them and decided they needed protection, for one reason or another.

Of course, you want them back.

It's hard to know where to begin, though. First, there are a large number of kin here. Are they fellow protectors or are they predators? Who can you trust? Second, well, second, this clearing is well-trod, and you weren't able to witness the kidnapping in person. There are, after a while spent inspecting, a number of signs you could follow.

A) There are hoofprints and heavy drag marks in the dirt leading away from the clearing. It could be the kidnapper - or it could just be the tracks of some kin who's wandered here today.
B) Something has gone crashing through the trees - there's a number of fallen branches, too large and strong-looking to have fallen on their own. Then again, you're not familiar with the climate - it could have been the wind, or a strong storm.
C) The clearing is loud from the murmur of kin-speech, but over it you can hear a cacophony. There are canines and birds making a ruckus off that way, somewhere. Of course, they're just animals - it could mean anything.
D) You've never followed any lead except your own instinct - it's led you well, after all. You strike out in the direction where you think a kidnapper may have taken the kids. (On the other hand, you could just be wrong.)

Please roll 1d20 along with your decision. Day 1 decisions should be posted by 11:59 PM PT (UTC-8 ) on February 25, 2017.

Howlback knew she wasn't home, her kin was not near by and the land was odd, warm and must and dark. The Huntress stood slowly, ears prickling, taking in the hum of kin and the background sounds around her. Why was she here.

There had been young, a clutch and she couldn't remember what they had been but they are gone and she had been watching them. For some reason, there had been those among her kin hoping for young, so perhaps they had been Glacial's, or Conquest's or any of the bucks.

Missing children though...She gave a hum, leveling up on her feet and moved towards the area. Hoof prints and drag marks, yes a possibility but they were so easy to make. The trees looked like a possibility, one that she would follow.

It could be wind, but it could be any other thing. Howlback had her starting point and she would look into it.

Storm was at a loss, who would take helpless children? Examination of all the signs had her torn but she finally decided she'd follow the direction of the animals. It had to be something causing then done sort of distress in order for them to sound like that. At least that was her logic behind it. Setting her mind on that decision the young totoma set forth on her quest.

Honeydew found herself thrust in a new environment with no leads; just a singular goal in her mind. It was a bizarre scenario but she didn't have much choice in the matter, so she decided not to dwell on it. There were young to be found and retrieved.

She ignored the other kin for now and looked for signs. Anything that indicated that something was amiss. She spotted a few things that were out of place but the trees caught her interest. The fallen branches seemed unusual to her, so she made her way into the scene.

Swallows the Silence, tilting his head up and inhaling deeply the unfamiliar scents around him; the warmth of twilight was one he'd felt many times, but the dryness at his feet and the must around was not. Sensitive ears swiveled, catching flashes of conversation and the sounds of home, yet his other senses insisted it was not. They flattened as a memory came creeping back, a memory of - sacs? His own? He wasn't sure, but a sense of panic slowly hooked itself into his brain as he turned this way and that, huffing as he struggled to remember what had happened and, just as importantly, where he was.

Without even his feline companions to guide him, the buck was forced to older habits; he lowered his head to the ground, scenting until he caught the smell of another kin, strong enough at least to follow that specifically until he felt the dip of hoofprints along the ground with his sensitive nose. With little else to go on, he elected to follow the marks, walking along them and occasionally dipping his head back down to make sure they were still there. If nothing else, perhaps if he could find the one they belonged to, he could ask them some questions about where he was.

Landsmet was devastated. The sight of torn, diaphanous shreds and scrapes where the sacs and eggs had previously lain was a shock to behold, and the Acha couldn't bear to imagine where they'd been taken, or why. They'd been safe and fine here, or so the young buck had thought, figuring that many eyes and a place that was well-trodden would make sure the clutch didn't suffer at the hands of a wild animal, or worse.

But what had happened here clearly wasn't the work of any animals. Animals left obvious marks, and the lack of blood, dried albumen or egg shards seemed to indicate that it at least hadn't been one of the wild creatures in the Swamp. Of course, that led him to more dire, serious conclusions. This clutch, whose mother had entrusted him to watch, was simply gone, and he would not rest until he had found them.

Think. Think, thinkthinkthink. The buck paced, nose raised to the air as he tried to see around taller kin, ears perked and eyes out for some sort of sign. When he saw the first felled branches, he thought nothing of it– simply that someone had gotten rowdy. But as he paced past it, it was a clear someone had crashed a path through the trees.

He hoped that whoever– or whatever– had taken the eggs hadn't been that careless, but time was of the essence, and his heart was thudding hard enough that he could taste his pulse.

Now wasn't the time for doubts, or second-guessing. He started off along the broken tree's path, intent on tracking down whatever it was had done it.

Heart's Yearning looked around the clearing, a bit of panic fluttering through her. She needed to get the sacs back. It wasn't safe. Those hoof prints couldn't be trusted, anyone could trot through here at any time. It was probably just from someone meandering through. She could check the noisome racket that some animals were causing, but her gut was informing her that it was not where the sacs had been taken.

Yearning looked around the clearing again, then decided to follow the path created by the broken branches. Obviously something had forced it's way through here, and anything desperate enough to make a new trail would be of interest to her in her quest to find those sacs.

Jester wandered into the clearing to a complete hustle and bustle today. What the heck was going on? He noted then that the eggs were missing and he could feel a sudden grip of dread. He inspected the small divot where the eggs had been stashed, and concluded that someone had slipped through here. And by the looks of all the kin gathered, they'd noticed them here too. What if... one of them took it? He flicked his ears, paranoid, and noted a set of tracks a few feet away, that appeared to look like something had been dragged away. "I hope that's a clue," he said to the small jackalope, Joke, at his feet. He twitched his nose, and Jester concluded he would attempt to follow them. Maybe it would lead to the culprit. He set out with a shaky hoof...

Born Again had been looking after one of his clanmates clutches, when they'd gone missing. Clues had led him to this place. A strange place, far from home, and others seemed to be here, too. Had something precious been taken from them as well? Rise didn't know, but he also didn't know if he could trust them -- what if one of them was the kinnapper?

Conflicted, he wandered around a little, looking for clues, but it was hard to know where to go. Finally, he figured even a criminal needed water - and set off to the south, hoping to find some nearby. Perhaps he'd find a clue there.

Bird Chaser had heard the news, and the heroic side of her wanted nothing more than to help. Of course, she was also impulsive, and she had to stop herself from just running straight towards the marks in the ground. She needed to think first. Her eyes traveled to those checking the broken branches, tail wiggling. Something caused that, and she wanted to know what that something was.

Guardian had been watching the eggs, and was beside herself that something should happen to them on her watch. All because she'd stepped away after several hours to get herself a drink of water and a few berries. She thought she had been close enough that they'd be safe, but it seemed like in the few moments her back was turned, something had managed to take them.

Searching, she found several ways to turn, and studied each a moment. The hoof prints and drag marks...that was hard to tell. The noise of animals almost had her go that way but she thought that maybe it was just some birds being attacked. So, Guardian began to look through the underbrush and trees. A stealth stealing seemed the most likely possibility, so she started to look there.

Storm looked around, confused. Where... was he? What had happened? He glanced down to make sure the little ones were safe and realized... they were gone. Panicking a little, he looked around wildly - just seeing more kin standing around. Some were also looking around in concern, others were heading off in various directions. Everything was so confusing it was hard for him to decide what to do.

Eventually, though, the noise of canines and birds caught his attention. Turning that direction, he decided to see what all the fuss was about.

What little light there was strained to reach them beneath the canopy. It would be difficult to see, much less navigate the number of bodies here. Keeper pressed on regardless: he could not waste another moment. He didn't know why he felt so strongly about rescuing his tribe's eggs—he couldn't even remember how they came to be, how long they had them, or who the parents were—he only knew that he must.

A quick talk with the others here revealed that his eggs were not alone. Others had been taken, and the number hinted at a larger level of planning that filled him with dread. Acha eggs were more difficult to carry than other young, he figured, as a result of their rounded shell. The task of transporting them would be made even more challenging if other sacs were involved, too. If it were up to him, he thought he would wrap them in a pelt and pull them if they could not be held.

He followed the drag marks.

Frogs Rule the River hadn't really adopted the sacs some kimeti had lay near her home, she'd only decided to keep an eye on them. Make sure the crocs didn't eat them. Until someone had made off with them. Surely it was a kin, or group of kin, no predator could have devoured them all that fast.

She stops to wonder if all the kin here had missing eggs or sacs. Maybe hatched younglings too? Not her problem. True, finding a kin or two to team up with might be beneficial, but also, how could she trust any of them? For all she knew, one or more of the kin here were the culprits.

Choosing a path, hoofmarks and something being dragged, she sets off.
