“Not on my watch!” Lutrin replied. Perhaps Engrav would reconsider leaving if she helped him out. She clambered up on top of the shelves to survey the war zone. It took longer than she thought to locate the enemy. It seemed multiple trolls were assaulting others with vegetables. The thought made Lutrin's blood boil. Vegetables were for eating, not hurting people!

Carrot stick in hand, Lutirin launched herself off the shelf with a feral war cry. She would stop every one of them in the name of justice. In the name of vegetables!

[Buzzwulf]

There was a thump and a gasping-wheezing sound as someone tackled the sniper from the far end of their aisle. Engrav wasted no time, ducking from behind cover while screaming into his microphone.

"We're clear! We're clear! The area is secured!"

He scooped up some loot from the fallen offender's sack and tossed it into his, barely pausing to look at what he'd found. The yellowblood dropped back into cover an aisle over, and looked at his spoils.

Three potatoes! YUSSSS.

War is hell.

Lutrin continued her rampage. She had been filled with divine fury and would not be stopped until all crimes against vegetable kind had been brought to an end. She would see each and every criminal brought to their knees and repent. Only when they swore their allegiance to fruits and tubers would she grant them mercy.

Covered in chunks of carrot, Lutrin raised her weapon high in the air and let out another feral scream.

There was a huffing, wheezing sound from behind Engrav, and he turned his head just the slightest bit to look over his shoulder. Ah. The troll who'd tackled the sniper. Well.

He was huge.

Engrav wasted no time sprinting away as quickly as his stick-bird legs could carry him, bowling right into a shelf and ending up in a pile of potatoes.

Well, on the plus side, free potatoes.

He could hear the roaring of that behemoth from a few aisles over, though. Hadn't lost him entirely.

Ten minutes later, Lutrin had instigated a revolution. Blood spilled over the floor. Children raced through the aisles, holding their weapons aloft. The sharpened ends were driven into unyielding adults, who screamed and begged for them to leave. Their words were met with the gnashing teeth of protective lusii. It was madness. The world had dissolved into anarchy.

The warm fire of her battle rage fading, Lutrin observed the war zone from atop a tuber sculpture. All around her, she could see the results of her bid for vegetable freedom. The wounded lay sprawled between the aisles, some howling in pain, and others quietly weeping. It was a sight that brought pain to her pump biscuit. She turned her gaze higher, farther, to where across the store the battle had not yet reached. Those conditions looked far more agreeable for shopping.

Without so much as a flicker of remorse, she hopped down from her perch and skipped over to the calmer side of the store.

Engrav turned the corner and ducked under a low box. He scrambled desperately on the ground, hands trying to find anything he could use to defend himself. What was that? His hands skittered over a small bag of something.

Good enough, he guessed. He reached inside and tossed a handful of brightly-colored, garish miniature veggies in the opposite direction then his hiding space.

A few seconds later he was rewarded with a muttered curse and heavy footsteps heading in the direction he'd thrown the toys. Engrav sighed his relief, then crawled away to safety, tucking the little bag into his loot sack.

"I hope you're having better luck than I am, Agent. I don't know if I'm cut out for this whole shopping thing."

Ignoring the cries of pain from the scene she had just left, Lutrin picked her way through the scattered merchandise. She passed a shelf of potatoes, surveying them with a critical eye before moving on. She had gotten her fill of common place tubers. Now she needed to find something rare... something unusual. As she browsed, she heard a voice through the potato face, most likely from the radio it harboured. Would it not be something though if potatoes could talk. She wiggled a finger inside to press the talk button.

“We won the battle!” she exclaimed breathlessly. “I got a bushel bushel of a bushel!” As though to demonstrate to her absent companion, she raised a hefty sack proudly.

Having lost his pursuer, Engrav wandered aimlessly through the holiday carnage, ducking out of the way whenever someone threw a tuber at his head. He was starting to get worried. According to his calculations, he was almost halfway through the average time, but he still had below the average number of presents. He guessed raw calculations hadn't prepared him for the pure insanity of holiday shopping.

He'd still better get a move on, though.

He ducked out of the way of a thrown spud, then snatched it and another that had been thrown earlier form the ground, and stuffed them in his bag. Waste not and all that. He was sure they were hardly bruised at all.

The quiet section of the store did not remain quiet for long. Lutrin had been hypnotised watching a potatual motion machine for the past several minutes, when a low rumble brought her back to her senses. The earth beneath her seemed to quake. She looked up to see a crowd stampeding towards her, like a herd of angry buffbeasts. She let out a shriek, clutched the machine to her chest, and played standing dead. She would have played fully dead, but getting trampled did not seem like a wise idea.

Engrav wandered aimlessly down the endless aisles of root apocalypse. Here there was a large, animatronic potato on fire. There, there was a collapsed pile of mashed potatoes, carrots, and rutabagas with a foot poking out of it.

Wait, was that the other slipper to the one that had stepped on him earlier?

Without compunction, engrav slipped it from the still-twitching movement phalange, and tossed it into his sack. He pulled out his radio, and said quietly "Good job today, Agent. I think everything is gonna be alright."

Swept up in the shopper tide, Lutrin was buffeted form aisle to aisle. Her loot sack bashed against her side. She dug around for her potadio and once she found it, held on for dear life. “Mayday! Mayday!” she called over the din. An elbow jostled her and her finger slipped off the speaker button. She jerked her thumb back onto it. “Mister Snatch, we have a code Bobbing Chestnut by the Quackbeast! It's a tsunaaaaaami!”

Engrav walked past a display, whistling softly to himself. Then, he turned, just to make sure that what he had seen was actually what was there.

Yup. Tiny figurines of veggies, turning softly under pastel lights to the muffled sounds of slam poetry. What kind of mad, tacky genius had decided to put this together?

His disgust didn't stop him from pocketing a figuring or two. Had to be realistic. Loot was loot, after all.

At last, dizzy and disoriented, she was left on a floor in the corner as the mob continued their mad rush around the perimeter of the store. Shakily, she got to her feet. She had survived the troll tsunami only just. If it came around again, she was not sure she could take it.

First things first: she had to check to make sure she still had everything. Despite the misadventure, she had kept a tight grip on her loot sack. Thankfully it looked like aside from a few minor tears and beatings, it had escaped damage. She would have been devastated if all the vegetables of her labour had spilt out over the floor. She also still had a solid grip on her radio. Several trolls had the nerve to try and pry it from her fingers, but they had been met with shrieks the volume of a jackhammer, and teeth like a saw.

Engrav pulled an offending veggie from the shelf in front of him. This one had a little package filled with fake eyes. Gog, if he never saw another potato again, he'd consider himself lucky after today. The yellowblood shrugged and stuffed it into his sack, which was starting to look pretty full. Maybe he should head to the checkout line soonish?

But there were still so many treasures to plunder! And math!

There was a quiet crackle from overhead at the public broadcast nodes sprung to life, sounding like nothing other than some pimply teen. "A-Attention holiday shoppers. W-We j-j-just wanted to t-tell you that aisle 5Y is now on sale."

Engrav glanced at the aisle he was in. Aisle 5Y. He could hear a low rumble in the distance.

Uh-oh.

As Lutrin looked up to take stock of her surroundings, her eyes widened. Right in front of her, she had discovered something almost as magical as the dancing vegetables. Gingerly, almost fearfully, she reached out to touch the object. When it did not come apart in her hands, she tightened her fingers around it. This was special. This was amazing. No one else could have it. She knew right when she saw it, that it had been made for her.

Rules be damned, she was wearing this out.

Lutrin donned the potato skin costume.
