One of the biggest projects in their school year; the science fair. It was on every school-aged phony's mind for months after it's announcement. Deciding on a topic, carrying out experiments, tracking results...
Baking was sure he was going to win it.
He sat at his booth, entitled "How Much Sugar is Too Much?" written in bold letters that were only slightly wobbly on the sides. On his counter, he had piles of candies in dishes with little name placards, and notes about how much sugar was in them. To his left, a chart. He was particularly proud of his chart. Most phonies would take the sugar content and figure out the lasting effects to the body. But not Baking. He measured the amount of sugar, and after ingesting a set portion, tracked how long until he felt the sugar high, and the sugar crash. It was all there int eh chart, with a little brown phony picture as the measuring stick of the times. He sat, running his hoof over his sparse mane, and waited for people and phonies to approach.
He was determined to win the Best Science Project Award.
"Come over and see my results on sugar intake! The answers will shock you!" He called, waving his hooves around and smiling.

Science fairs were not really Regality's thing. She had spent a better portion of her allotted project time protesting until one of her sisters gave her an eye opening idea. And so here Regality found herself standing proudly in front of a perfectly decorated table and framed information boards, all the colors of pure femininity. A banner was stuck neatly onto the main board with sparkling, curling, cursive letters that read "Designer Shampoos: Are they worth it?". A smug look was plastered upon the filly's face as she seemed to have drawn quite the crowed, or at least quite the female crowed. Some of her aspiring classmates crowded around to hang on every word she said, eyes hopeful that maybe they'd have a luxurious mane like her's some day. Everything was going perfect, she'd win for sure! "That's right fillies and gentlecolts, you too could have hair as perfect as mine. How?" she beamed, leaving them hanging on her words. Or.... so she thought. Her eyes narrowed as a couple disinterested colts and fillies meandered away from her booth and over towards a spotted brown colt with hardly any hair to show for. Stomping her hoof, Regality bit back frustration and continued trying to lure in the crowds even louder. "Designer shampoos! Worth it? For you, they could be!!"

He was pleased with the crowd that was gathering. Even more so when he saw a couple of phonies leave another booth for his own. He smiled a big, cheesy grin, and began to gesture to the candies before him.
"Now, how many of you like gum drops?" he said, waiting for the audience to raise their hooves. "Well, it's probably no surprise that they are mostly sugar; over half in fact! And these marshmallows? Over 80 percent!" He waited for the crowd to gasp, or maybe a delicate filly to faint, but nothing happened. A couple of foals looked at each other, and rolled their eyes.
That was when a filly's voice rang out over his own. "Designer shampoos!" Baking paused, looking out to find the filly. Her booth was glittery and girly. There was no way he was going to lose colts to that!
But as he went back to his presentation, he found the crowd thinning. They were actually interested in what she had to say!
Baking grumbled, then got an idea.
"WELL, it's more than just numbers isn't it, to be a scientist. That's why I put my body on the line for this experiment!" he boasted, puffing out his chest.
"Yes, I took one for science, and tested what the sugar did to me, so that I could give you the best results!" Phonies were coming back; and Baking was pleased. He would win!

Narrowing her eyes, Regality huffed and stepped up onto her stand. One she had brought for emergencies just such as this! Grinning, the filly flicked her hair, taking special interest in emphasizing each strand as she ran her hoof through her mane. Her golden gaze noted several fillies trotting over to her booth excitedly and she beamed down at them. "Oh what a lovely mane! But you know what?" she blinked, leaning in closer. "It could be even lovelier!" she grinned, almost laughing at the fillies gasp. "Oh no no, hear me out!" she waved her hooves at her gathering crowed, some of which that had left the silly sugar stand. Grabbing two bottles of shampoo, she used her magic to levitate each one in turn. "Why go for cheap, ineffective, boring? When you could have lustrous locks just like mine and no real hard work to get it?" she smiled. Or she had been, at least when she saw a couple colts trot back off towards the baking foal. She wouldn't lose, she absolutely wouldn't! That was it. Time to deliver facts and stop trying to sell it. "I tested several different types on several types of manes and you wont believe the results I got!" she shouted, now holding up a chart with bits of different colored locks of hair tapped down ever so precisely, some looking far greater than others.

It. Was. ON.
This little filly was going down. Now that they were both shouting, a few other booths had gone quiet, their owners taring at the two shouting like they were crazy. Baking ignored them; they weren't taking his audience. No, just the idea of a fantastic mane. But where was the fun in that?
He also ignored the fact that his mane was sorely lacking. This had nothing to do with that. Nope, not at all.
He jumped from behind his table, slapping his hoof against the giant chart. "Here you see that for the most part, the more sugar, the longer the sugar high lasted. BUT!" he said, leaping to the side so he could show another part of the chart. "You'll see HERE that even though lollipops had more sugar, I didn't stay as sugar-high as the marshmallows. The anomaly shows that sugar that has been liquefied actually enters your system sooner and lasts longer!" There were murmurings among the crowd of phonies; Baking flashed a smile toward the filly and her mane care booth.
Some of the phonies were looking back and forth between the two booths, confused. More than one teacher tiled their head in concern over the competition brewing. Two fillies finally decided that they wanted no part of the insanity and wandered away from both booths. Soon, other folks were doing the same, though Baking hardly noticed, He was too busy touting his project, determined to stare down Regality.
It wasn't long before there was hardly a phony around to listen.

Wrinkling her nose, Regality flipped her mane again and grinned at a pair of fillies who seemed enraptured with her. "That's right. Why go for cheap? I'm here to prove to you that expensive is better! Cheap shampoo's are made with more water than the actual products to cleanse and rejuvenate your mane!" she said loudly and smugly, her eyes glancing at the colt across the way. As he droned on she droned on even more, louder and louder, clearly wanting to be better than his silly sugar filled brain! But the more she started talking the more she started to realize that more and more foals grew bored with both of them and had moved on. Glancing down she noticed that even the enraptured fillies had started to file away. "No wait come back there's more! I promise!" she begged, looking distressed that all her attention had left. Really, she didn't care if they took her advice on hair products, she just wanted to be the best! To have all eyes on her! But now....there was none. Blinking, Regality simply stared at her foal competition and daintily rubbed a hoof against the side of her head. "Aha...ah...um..."

When he finally realized that there was no one around, Baking was practically shouting. His voice died in his throat as he locked eyes with the foal he was trying to upstage as the situation dawned on the both of them. His cheeks reddened, and he carefully got down off of his perch, hoof clicking on the floor of the gym.
Suddenly, a laugh bubbled up from Baking's stomach. After all that work, he had failed.
But at least he hadn't failed alone.
The laughter increased in volume, until his legs couldn't hold his weight anymore and he collapsed on the floor.
