Some banana facts:

1. You can lengthen the lifespan of your bananas by wrapping the stems with plastic wrap until you're ready to use them. It slows the ripening process. (Fact 1.5: This is also the very reason why, if you've noticed, the organic banana bunches sold at most stores come with their stems pre-wrapped. Organic doesn't sell as fast, so it keeps the fruit sellable for longer.)

2. The original strain of bananas eaten in the US until the 1950s was called the Gros Michel variety, and apparently they tasted exactly what those Runts banana candies taste like. The Gros Michel strain went extinct in the 1950s due to the Panama disease, and the current strain, known as the Cavendish banana, was genetically modified to withstand the disease.

3. The potassium in bananas acts as a natural painkiller when you're having muscle cramps.

4. In my experience, Dole brand bananas ripen really stupidly. They never become fully yellow. They go from green, to sickly green, to brownish sickly green, to brown. I don't actually know why. I miss my amazing Chiquita bananas... emo
