As days phased to nights followed by months the little mare's belly began to fully show its beauty. She began feeling the weight shift as her abdomen would gurgle and roll on its own. Occasionally her muzzle would touch upon her sides lightly reassuring the active life she was always with them. This very day she was quite uncomfortable grunting heavily in protest as her children announced they'd be soon ready to leave the safety of their mother's womb. She knew not the genders only that there were three distinct moments within.

"You lil ones calm down now. I need to check on the herbs. Please" she asked with another groan. Their little legs thrashed about as space became limited in their lives. One even rolled protruding practically out of her belly if the skin wasn't so thick that wrapped around her with thick fur. It was much like an impenetrable fortress that nothing could impenetrate or destroy at least, not on her mate's watch. For days had followed the same routine sending Artaius out after a food craving then she'd rest under that familiar rose bush that protected her in sleep. She knew Art wasn't too keen on being around humans so when she slept the indian girl whom lived with the herd would visit her under the rosebush. She looked forward to this daily since the attention was a real treat. The girl would brush her down still her golden fur shined then rubbed a salve upon her belly so it didn't feel so taut as it used to. A special treat was offered in fruit and sugar whilst the girl would always inspect the condition of the mare's belly.

As she prepared to send Art out to find her treats she grunted with a high pitched whinny then fell down to her knees near the entrance to the herb garden..They were pushing on her insides and finally she knew it was time. Grunting again she hoped Art was coming soon but more so she wanted the girl to be with her. Celendria's words always soothed her when she spoke of how trained the girl was. Lying her head down on the ground she gave a pathetic cry that wasn't loud but it protested against her current situation.

"Please.... let this be over soon" she sighed feeling her little bundles push even harder to finally come out.

While Rue knew she wouldn't see them till they were strong enough she'd have her baskets to watch over in the herb garden. This contented her for a moment till she heard footsteps coming toward her causing the mare to become alarmed since she was too tired to get up. Making a whinny that was more of a warning she hoped the intruder would leave her be for being a first time mother was anxiety within itself. She tried standing quickly as her legs felt weak to meet this intruder if she had to fight for her children's' lives.

"Saa.... Saa Golden one" came the voice of the girl the mare loved hearing when she was distressed.

Quick hands touched lightly upon Rue's belly with that salve she always used daily. She kept talking to the mare brushing her coat as she checked for how close her time was. Usually, she'd get the birthing mares to the teepee but she decided here was the best place.

Rue looked over noticing that there was three baskets lying on the ground which made her weak at the knees. Three?! Seriously she thought she was miscounting for months now. Her head looked around for Art hoping the girl wouldn't cause him to get defensive. She was always there when the herd welcomed new foals as their own. It was a joyous occasion which she was excited to meet her little ones.

It was time.

He'd been returning from gathering a bit of sweet grass to share with he as a meal. It was as he drew nearer he could hear the familiar whinny. This time however, the whinny wasn't the sweet joyous welcoming he often heard. Something wasn't right. In fact, all was amiss.

Dropping the bundle he was carrying, he rushed forward to see what was the cause of such a distressed call. His beloved could be hurt or worse. His mind's eye could see any number of things that could befall a pregnant mare. Not knowing was likely worst of it. Skin walkers, kalona, anything, even as close to the teepee she stayed near. Oh, why hadn't she just come with him? Why hadn't he made her leave so he could protect her? Was he to loose her after she'd saved his soul? Was he to loose everything with her?

He had to push the thoughts from his mind before he sent himself in a spiral. It took only minutes to draw close enough to see but the minutes seemed more to be like hours as he ran, muscles flexing charged with adrenalin. Nostrils flaring, he came to a halt just short of the golden coated mare. At first glance, there was no threat that he could see. Scanning the area once more he saw the native woman over the mare and he whinnied a warning, pawing at the ground.

He didn't recognize the woman at first, then slowly he began to make sense of things. She was just as Rue had described. Pinning his ears back, he still didn't like it. He didn't trust the woman however, Rue vouched for her kindness before. As he kept his distance, he began to pace back and forth as though he were walking an invisible fence. If this woman's presence made Rue all the more calm, he'd have to trust that she wouldn't pose a threat. As he paced, he eyed the baskets. Three? He blinked his eyes a few times before looking back to the baskets that were awaiting their little arrivals. Sure enough, there were three setting to the side. He felt as though the world was moving under his feet. Never had he dreamed they'd actually be greeting three little ones.

Being the most intense thing in your life leads to belief things last forever. This particular moment was the most agonizing fate that was ever experienced and shouldn't be the last. The pain by far was excruciating but it was well known in advance from the moment in time it began. In a blink of an eye though with several grunts each searing pain that swallowed her whole dissipated leaving a nod to the next occurrence. Sense of time was washed away in this moment of amazement alerting life that she welcomed three new souls into her care.

Then in a whisper it was brought to a finale.

Her breathing was much better as the golden mare looked around her to capture a glance of the foals being placed in the baskets. Unknown to anyone she had no clue what gender nor personality they'd have. Each basket was painted carefully in distinct colors by the talented maiden that had selflessly weaved each with knowledge months on end before. The palomino mare with blue orbs of wonder seriously contemplated how those two-leggers even attempted to keep up with such tasks in a daily situation.

Rue's attention turned to her mate that wasn't too keen on the two-legger's presence. She was grateful he hadn't ran the poor maiden out or otherwise he would of been placing foals in baskets himself. The thought was amusing even when her body ached with such tiredness all she desired was sleep in her mindset. Closing her eyes she breathed in deeply the scent of new life and that familiar salve that she received daily from the maiden known as Tiranna. Like clockwork her lithe fingers slowly worked in the calming creation letting her teats feel less taunt along with a content belly. Soon as the maiden's work was done she stroked the mane of Rue lovingly then offered her a treat. The mare took note the maiden was being discreet and overly careful with the stallion's presence. Accepting the honey treat in appreciation she made a small whinny as the girl hurried out of the herb garden.

When she was gone Rue smiled, "Artaius? You can come out of hiding now she's gone". She never understood why some distrusted the two-leggers but they had their reasons. "Three my love.... three healthy foals for us to watch over and teach. I sensed there was more than two but my mind never pondered three was the actual number". She was exhausted as her head lied upon the ground with a grunt. The experience of motherhood had come to a close and yet it was merely a new beginning.
"How proud you must be... a father of three that will greet us with affection and wonderment". Being weak from her previous task she still laughed a little in spite of her body feeling like it had been torn in four quarters. Lifting her head back up she looked at her mate with much affection. Never in a million years had she dreamed of this moment that seemed to envelope them in a soft atmospheric glow that surrounded them both.

Artaius waited till the woman had left before finally making his was cautiously towards his beloved mate. Lowering his head, he first inspected her, nuzzling and lipping at her mane affectionately before moving to inspect the baskets. "Three.." His voice was full of wonder. Both of his previous sons had been singlet's and now here he was welcoming three healthy foals into the world to protect and care for. As he inspected each one, he nudged the baskets closer to their mother before finally settling himself on the other side of her.

Nudging and nuzzling her, he coaxed her to rest herself against his solid form. "You've done well my Little Rue." He cooed into her ear tenderly. "Rest now, Sleep and I shall look over you and our little ones. You've been through enough, my love now rest." He lipped at her cheek once more trying to reassure her. He knew she had to be worn out from bringing their foals into the world.

The least he could do now, was to let her rest and protect the four of them while Rue slept. He looked over the baskets that held their young ones, admiring each in their own right. It was remarkable. He's awaited this day to come eagerly, and here they were. Three healthy foals, all in their colorful wicker cells till they could come out and see them face to face. He wondered, How his older sons might take their existence. Shilo and he still had tensions and issues to resolve. Hopefully he wouldn't take their personal issues out on his younger brothers when he finally learned of them.

Perhaps it had been a day or even a week Rue was unsure as her eyes reopened. Still sore from the birthing she looked quaintly over toward the baskets lined near her resting place. Somewhere in her slumber Rue had been visited once again the salve placed gently upon her teats filling with milk. Near her there was a bowl of streambed water and a special oat grain mixture left quietly alone. Raising her head up she looked over at their baskets leaving out a big yawn afterwards. Feeling dryness in her parched throat she drank the cool water within the bowl letting it sway downward giving life and strength and life. Afterwards she ate her fill of the mixture noting the honey that was mixed within leaving a savory sweetness along the surface of her tongue. Stretching she finished off the mixture then drank heavily from the bowl the last remaining drops. In her morning ritual she stretched then pulled herself upon all four strong yet shaky legs. With a flick of her long tail she shook herself releasing the life force within her form. Then she walked slowly looking around showed not a hint of negligence within the garden itself Each plant, herb, and other treats had been taken care of in the absence of the vigilant mare. Swiveling her ears she continued her inspection till her head poked out from the garden entrance. Swiveling her ears she listened to the chirping birds and lyrical insects around her.

How long had it been since she set foot out of the garden her mind queried with a small rouse of amusement.

Ever since she had lived here her attention was that of the garden straying only a few minutes a day for water or forage. Now she welcomed the stretch in her legs and body as she stepped out into the encampment. Any moment could signal her foals basket arrivals but her heart and soul intended to breathe fresh air before then. Being a quiet day she chose to venture out for a bit leaving her duties behind. Artaius most likely was gather her fruits and treats as she pondered his whereabouts. The last few moments had certainly been a blur which she apologized softly to herself and her mate. Remembering her cravings she sent her mate on quests of all kinds yet not once did he cause a fuss nor objection retrieving them. Swishing her long ail she walked slowly under the apple tree and relaxed a bit with another yawn. Now was the time to relax because foals had most certainly in her eyes taken the strength from you mentally and physically. There would be moments of grandeur followed by those of embarrassment but it all wove into the qualifications of parenting.

Feeling that tearing sensation within again she buckled her legs slowly then lied upon the cool ground in the apple tree's shade, "I'll wait here for him and maybe take a small nap in between" yawning with flick of her head she closed her eyes once again.

Artaius had gone out to forage food for Rue again. He'd left early in the morning while she slept having nudged the baskets tenderly back against their dreaming mother. He'd tolerated being close by the woman that seemed to care for the new family especially in his absence. He'd even grown adapt to staying within the teepee or at least near by it so that he could keep guard over his foals and their mother.

Still, it was a reprieve for hm to have his daily task of finding and returning with food for the golden mare. He'd even swiped an empty basket from beside the teepee that could carry his finds. He'd gathered plenty of grass and even some apples and other things he liked the taste of himself. Of course he wasn't about to brig her things he had not himself first tried.

Returning to the teepee, he poked his head in through the flap and looked first over the baskets and then to where he'd left their mother. 'Wait a moment,' he thought to himself. Where was she? Counting the numbers of his family over once more still he came up one short. Backing out slowly, he made his way to the herbs to see if maybe just maybe she'd taken to try and tend the garden.

'Not here either.' Returning to the teepee, he dropped the basket of food off and hastened his pace. Just where could she have gone? Surely she wouldn't have abandoned their foals. No, there had to be an answer. He continued his search around the encampment hoping to find her. His mind was starting to whirl. What if while she was out something happened? Perhaps a predator had taken advantage of her state?

He shook his head forcing the fears no matter how rational back down. He needed to be thinking rationally and logically. It wouldn't do himself or Rue any good to be in a panic. As he drew closer to some apple trees, his heart dropped. On the ground was the golden figure he'd been searching for. Galloping over, he came to a halt once he reached her side. Lowering his massive head down, he checked her over, nudging and nosing her as he went. If she were injured, he'd need to know but mostly, he needed to reassure himself that she still drew breath.

"Rue," He hesitated as he spoke. "Rue, Wake up." The silence was thick like it could be sliced through with a blade. He was hoping she'd awaken soon, ease the knot that was forming in the pit of his stomach as she lay there un-moving. She drew breath yet still and as far as he knew, she wasn't injured. Oh why in the world would she go and wander off if she was still feeling weak?
