"Think you're good at fishing?" she says. "Why not give it a go?" She gestures to a small pond. It looks as though it's been recently enlarged. The water is extremely murky and there's a thick coating of frogbit on top. "All you have to do is close your eyes and reach in and see what you pull out. If you get a fish- and it has to be a fish- I'll give you a token. Catch it gently- this is a catch and release pond! I don't want to have to restock it for a while," she admonishes, then steps aside so you can plunge your face into the pond. "You get one chance- once you come back up, you're done. Good luck!"

Without further ado, you step up to the pond and stare into the muddy water. Its surface ripples with the flash of an occasional fin. How hard can this be?

OOC INSTRUCTIONS

To go fishing, roll a twenty-sided die. Check the number you rolled against the list below, then edit in a short response with whatever kin you're using. There doesn't have to be a word count, but there does have to be a picture of your kin. Or a link to your kin. Or your kin's full name- something so that if you don't get a token I have an idea of what they look like. If you don't have a kin, you can make one up. I would be happy to draw a terrible picture of a quest kin! Or I can draw you an aggressively terrible picture of something else.

If you won a token, take it to the Token Claim and Exchange Thread. If you didn't win a token, you can try again tomorrow... but nobody goes home empty-handed. Sort of. If you don't get a token, you do get something that can dubiously be called “art.” It will be of the kin you used, unless you tell me otherwise, and will be dropped off once per day!

Examples of the high caliber of art you'll be getting:

User ImageUser Image

Results List

1. You stick your face into the pond and pull out a minnow. It’s huge… for a minnow! You exchange it for a token.
2. You reach into the pond and pull out a small grayling. Good job! You exchange it for a token.
3. You dip into the pond and pull out a rock. Wow. No token.
4. You reach into the pond and pull out a rock… a brightly colored rock. It’s a token! Someone must have dropped it. You keep it.
5. You nose around the bottom of the pond, but you don’t manage to find anything. Fair Hunter shakes her head and lets back in the pond to clean your muddy snout. No token for you, though- she doesn’t have that much pity.
6. You eagerly splash into the pond, knowing you’ll pull out the biggest and best fish. You swish your muzzle through the swirling mud and pull out something slimy. A catfish, you think- but when you get it above the water it’s a frog. It glares at you, then hops back to the booth next door. Fair Hunter shakes her head. No token.
7. That water looks pretty gross, but you do want the token, so you slowly dip your head in, squeezing your eyes shut and gritting your teeth. Something bumps against you and you snap at it- it’s a bluegill! You exchange it for a token.
8. You dip your face in the pond but get a mouth full of frogbit for your troubles. Fair Hunter gives a “hmph” that might be a chuckle in the right light. As you spit out the frogbit, a tiny fish falls out with it! You eagerly look at Fair Hunter. She shrugs and tosses you a token.
9. You stick your muzzle into the pond. Almost immediately a small bass smacks into your lips. This was super easy! You trade the bass for a token.
10. It takes you a while to find anything in the pond, but just as you’re about ready to give up and go up for air, you find an emerald shiner! It’s little, but it still counts! You get a token.
11. You eagerly reach into the pond and fish out a lovely little sunfish. You toss him back and take a token.
12. You dunk your head into the water and immediately feel the urge to cough. Without thinking you open up and the water rushes in. Whoops. Spluttering, you back out of the pond. All you managed to achieve was stirring up the mud. No token!
13. You take a deep breath and thrust your head into the water, giving it your all. You aim for the deepest part of the pond and find the biggest fish in there- a sleepy, grumpy pike that didn’t really want to be here today. Despite his massive size, you still only get one token.
14. You watch the water- you’re going to be smart about this, all strategic and clever. Sure enough, you see the tip of a dorsal fin break the surface. You snap after it, successfully snagging a small shad. Good job! You get a token.
15. You shut your eyes and feel around in the water. You feel an eel! Pulling it up, Fair Hunter nods approvingly. You get a token.
16. Fishing was never your favorite, but you give it a go- and you get yourself a goby! What a nice little fish. You get a token.
17. You fish around in the pond, trying to find something to pull. You n** at something… and it nips back, hard! That’s one angry walleye! You yelp and rear backwards, knocking into a spectator. No token for you!
18. As you nose around the pond, something brushes against your face. It has long fins, and that’s good enough for you. You snap at it and catch it- and while it puts up a heck of a fight, the smallish carp is yours. You pull it up and get a token for your troubles.
19. You plunge your snout into the pond and pull out the ugliest fish you’ve ever seen. It has an oily sheen to it and razor-sharp barbels. You spit it out almost immediately- was that taste really worth a token?
20. You somehow manage to fall into the pond. Fair Hunter huffs at you and suggests you visit a booth that’s a little less dangerous- perhaps pinecone decorating or storytelling? Clearly this shallow pond is too much for you. No token.

She wasn't really a fisher - she preferred poisons, when it came down to it, and, well, fishing with poison generally meant contaminating the water supply.

She nosed over, pushing her face beneath the water briefly. Then pulling it out. Were there even fish in here? How were you supposed to see? There was a reason she wasn't a hunter, you know.

...ugh. No good. Maybe she had to head a little closer? She tiptoed forward, searching for the telltale tickle of a fin. Or something. Instead she just found that the ground beneath her feet was - ah - it was -

Wet. And she'd just fallen in.

She extracted herself huffily and left without a word, daring that acha manning this booth to say anything. Well, who cared - even if she did, Time to Go could just ignore it. It was always back to the status quo, for her.

It was a GREAT AND TERRIBLE SECRET that Gecko was not... the best at paying attention. But Fair Hunter was running a booth! And that was very much exciting! During setup, her friend had explained the rules of the game. Dunk your head, catch a fish, get a nice rock! Wonderful! Gecko had wanted to keep the fish, but apparently that wasn't a thing??? Okay. Well, anyway! She was going to support her super duper bestest friend in the WHOLE SWAMP at her AMAZING BOOTH THAT EVERYONE SHOULD PLAY!!!

While she had a good head for hunting, the fair was... very distracting. Gecko had lashed at the water to get herself a DELICIOUS FISH, and when she had gone under, she remembered that she herself had a booth to run. She opened her mouth to ask Hunter to keep an eye on it anOH MOTHERFATHER SHE WAS UNDERWATER. THE VERY WORST THING. The kimeti doe reared up with a cough and a hack and absolutely no fish, and whined.

Hopefully, Fair Hunter hadn't seen that little display. Trying to shake herself off, Gecko took her token of shame, and scrambled back to her booth.

Like most of his decisions, this one was unfounded and driven completely on whim. BK decided it was worth a token. After all, tokens were shiny and nice and he liked them a lot. Besides, the mud might be... Pleasant? Had he ever shoved his muzzle into mud? Not that he could recall, really.

Sighing, he plunged in and instantly regretted the decision. Oh. It was in his mouth. It was IN HIS MOUTH. IT WAS IN. HIS. MOUTH. IT WAS IN IT ALL IN IT IT WAS IN IT AND SOMETHING WAS WRIGGLING IN HIS MOUTH.

Rearing back, he spat out the minnow onto the ground and fell over sideways, "That whush howwible!" Spitting dramatically, he wiped at his tongue vigorously, "Eurgh... Okay, it's gone now. Perhaps it wasn't too bad.. Perhaps I could stomach it again. Also I caught a minow and endured muddy hell so I best get something." He grumbled the last part while nudging the fish into the pond again.

She squeezes her eyes shut and lunches at something that happens to brush by her nose, and she jerks snake-light at lightning speed to grab whatever it was between her teeth before it managed to wriggle away.

Lo and behold... a... fish? No! And eel! She opens her eyes, and whips her head out of the water prancing to Fair Hunter. "I 'ought unn! I 'ought unn!" She chirped, and then set it down to flop a while before letting the poor thing back into the water to swim around until some other kin got it.

Birch could detect a fellow huntress and perhaps that while she had felt a pull to see what the intimating doe was running. She ran her eyes over the fin and sharp mouth filled with teeth and flashed her own smile.

"Fishing is it?" She looked over the pond, murky, frogbit, but there was fish and she had seen and smelled worse ponds in her travels. The kio flicked her ears, slowly walking the edge. Decision made, she flatted her ears, closed her eyes, and stuck her head down boldly into the pond and at the wiggle of fish, gently closed her teeth around her prey, lifting up.

Well, a minnow wasn't bad for fishing blind.

Now this booth! This booth Taste of the Sea knows what's it about. He is very good at fishing, he'll let you know.

As he watched the water he forced all the tension out of his body, fish can sense those stuff.

He watched calmly and when, that fin broke the surface of the water, her pulled with all his might and landed the fish!

Fishing! Hush is good at fishing. She does so almost every day at the small stream that floats by her den. Happily, she walks over, though she's careful to avoid bumping into anyone. There seems to be a fair sized crowd here, already, most of them watching the competitors. It makes her a bit nervous, and her tail twitches. After all, she's not normally one for crowds and, well, the pressure is on to catch something good, she thinks. Besides, she really does want a token..

"Umm.... I think I might be able to catch one. I promise not to hurt it," she amends, quickly, and ducks her head as it heats up a little. Ugh, so embarrassing. Why is she always so awkward around other kin? She does her best to block out those watching, and walks up to the small pond, before she sticks her head under the murky water.

Luckily for her, though, it proves to be pretty easy. No sooner has she ducked her head under than she senses something swim by her nose, and she snaps out - -carefully -- and catches something. It's a fat little bass, and the zikwa doe feels quite pleased as she releases it back into the water. Her sense of embarrassment, and nerves, now soothed, she turns expectantly to the acha.

"Thank you very much!" She takes the token carefully, and smiles. Her tail twitches back and forth, slowly and happily, as she tucks the token away in a small leather pouch.

Then, unable to help her curiosity, she glances at Fair Hunter. "Did you catch all these fish, yourself?"

Click to show.Truth be told, Distant Tidings wasn't particularly looking which body of water he was sticking his muzzle into (or he'd probably have chosen a less murky one, to be honest). He just needed water – any water – to wash that awful taste from the Treasure Flip fruit out of his mouth, and the pond had been right there. He plunged his head in and took a gulp – and a wriggling fish smacked into his mouth.

"Gwah!" he yelped, rising by instinct – the little bass, half caught between his jaws, followed. It didn't stay there for long, soon working itself free and plopping back into the water, but the proof of the fishing is in the, uh, fish, and Tidings' alarm soon turned to satisfaction when he'd realised that had netted a token for his involuntary efforts.

"I quite like this game," he decided, tossing his token up into the air and catching it in his mouth as he sauntered away. He'd caught a fish without even actually trying - surely that made him a consummate fisher. Perhaps he would be back.

User ImageEmerald had snuck out of her father's cave and followed him here, wherever here was. She didn't know or care much, just wanted to be out. And now she stands in front of a fishing booth, both awed by the number of kin around and nervous Seashell will catch her. But maybe if she can give him a prize he won't be mad? She thinks, walking up to try her luck at fishing. Taking a deep breath she dunks her head into the pond, holding still until she feels movement, then grabbing whatever it was, doing her best to be gentle because the slightly scary Acha said so.

Reluctantly, Emerald trades the carp for a token, almost tempted to ask for the fish instead. Carp is her favorite, and she'd never caught one this easy. But catching a flash of pink in the crowd she releases the fish back into the pond, taking the token with a stammered "Th-thank y-you." Before rushing off, heart fluttering and hoping like crazy that wasn't her father who'd just been there.

During a quiet moment, Negative slipped away from his own booth to nose around the market some more. The fishing pond seemed like a pretty easy, peaceful game - it was even catch and release, according to the slightly menacing acha running it! Ears flicking in excitement, he gently nosed around the muddy water... and came up with a giant of a minnow! He held it gently in his mouth, his firm and jagged lips slightly parted effectively containing the wee beastie. After the booth's operator inspected his catch, he gently returned it to the pond and picked up his token in exchange.

And he could fish.

As a matter of fact, he routinely spent time beside ponds when he was off the plains, staring into deep water, waiting for just the right moment to lunge for a fin or step on a tail and drag a wiggling, flopping fish back to shore for supper. Sometimes he even shared with Stonehoof, though he didn't think she needed to get used to the idea. The mare was more than capable of taking care of her own affairs.

But it didn't hurt to show off his prowess once again, so he headed for the booth boasting an opportunity to do just that. It was just like his usual routine: take a comfortable stance, focus on one thing and one thing only -- that being the fish, of course -- and wait. Which proved worthwhile when a fin broke the surface of the water and Stump lunged forward to yank it out. Oh, sure, it flapped and flopped and battered him about the muzzle somewhat, but what was a little bump on the nose when the victory was so sweet?

Dance the Night Away wasn't sure about going to the kissing booth, another female wasn't really her thing. Though, she could always aim for a cheek? Shaking her hair out, the doe stepped towards the pond, watching the others.

Well the acha in charge was a..bit intimidating, Dance was curious to see if she could. After looking in the muddy water, she was wishing to have something to keep her hair out of the water. Sadly she couldn't be so picky this time. Closing her eyes, Dance took a deep breath and went to find a fish. Something moved along side her, with fins it felt like, so she went after it. Some how it was a battle for her to get it out and to her surprise it was a fish of sorts. Smiling she looked at the doe in charge of the game. "Does this count?"

Blue Blood was not a fisher by trade, yet he was not unfamiliar to the process. Setting aside his pelt, he dove into the water, and spend a deal of time trying his hardest. It was by luck alone he got anything at all, and once presented he removed himself from the water, shaking off. It had just been an emerald shiner but- he sighed. Well, so what if he wasn't the BEST at fishing. He could just be the best at other things. Like being handsome.
