So there he was, meandering through the town and taking in the sights. It fely like he was walking through the set of some old-style Halloween flick, complete with perfectly done costumes and a perfect cast of characters that would spook the living daylights out of children for years to come. Halloween wasn't exactly his cup of tea, but he was at least intrigued by it all. He walked for a good long while, until finally he came upon a corn field. A huge one, or at least it looked huge from his standpoint, with signs and arrows and whatnot to indicate that it was a maze and that there was a prize waiting for whoever could make it to the center.

A "golden ear" didn't sound too appealing, but Rhys figured it was worth a shot, and he made his way to the entrance.

Right

He took the path on the right, and soon enough he started smelling...smoke. It started out real subtle, but the longer he walked the thicker it got and the harder it was to see where he was going. He outstretched his arms and was surprised to find that he couldn't reach very far. It took him a second to remember that he was a petit undead girl for the time being. 'Great...' he thought; he was careful about not talking at all...

Rhys wandered gradually away from the smoke, as breathing and seeing were kind of important to him and his instincts were for survival, not for suicide or unnecessary heroism. It was a maze that likely didn't have a hut that was set on fire smack dab in the middle just for shits and giggles. Or at least he hoped it didn't. Still, he moved away and tried to focus on the maze as opposed to the smoke.

Head Away from the Smoke

To his surprise, as the smoke was thinning and with his eyes trained forward he totally missed the wide open pit just a few steps ahead of him on the path he was on. By the time he noticed he was already mid-fall, and he cried out in his normal voice. He landed with an unceremonious thud and, after getting up and dusting himself off he noted that he only had one direction to choose from, so he walked on.

The path seemed to stretch for forever, and his mind started wandering. He knew this golem could only last so long, and if this path led to some chamber with no way out then he was rightly screwed. A sigh escaped him but he walked on, at least until he saw a strange looking sort of flower that looked like it was growing out of the corner of the path. He looked on a bit curiously and, when he came up to it, knelt and watched it for a moment. It didn't look particularly harmful...

He wasn't much for flowers, but he was a tad curious. It was the only flower there, so there was probably some reason, right? Rhys reached down to pick it up.

Pick the Flower

It promptly screamed, and he screamed right back in his surprise and dropped it, watching it with wide eyes as it vanished into thing air.

"Figures..." he muttered, then got up and continued walking. The path still felt endless, but once again he came upon an oddity--a fox-like thing (he made a mental note to study up on minipets so he could identify them on his next trip)--in the middle of the path. It looked out of place but he didn't want another incident so he walked past it.

It followed, and he tried his best to ignore it, but eventually he slowed down and the fluffy little thing padded right up to him and looked up curiously. He'd always been a fan of animals, or at least he was a fan of other people's animals (because ******** if he'd be solely responsible for another living being), so he knelt down and reached out to pet it between its tiny little ears.

Pet It

It started yapping in all its excitement, and he snorted but smiled. "Happy little b*****d, ain'tcha," he started to say. It got even more excited and he pet it some more; its tail was wagging and it was yapping and practically vibrating and then KABOOM!

He was on his back, covered in fur and completely confused. "Mental note," he groaned as he got up again. "Stop ********' touching things."

Further down the path he eventually encountered a spear, but per his new list of "Rhys's Halloween Rules" he left it behind and went on until he came across some singing robots. The screaming flower and exploding fluffball have done nothing for his mood however, and he barked at it to shut the ******** up.

Tell Them to Shut Up

The robot threw a small hissy fit and shuffled along. Rhys was oddly proud of himself for hurting the thing's feelings, and proceeded onward until a castle came into view. It felt oddly reminiscent of the city in the mountains from that one fantasy movie with a hobbit. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but he walked forward and was eventually faced with the entrance. It was closed, obviously. Hidden cities and such weren't so welcoming, at least according to that movie. It had a dragon that tried to kill the main characters and stuff, and for all he knew whoever thought up this maize maze thought of including something like that.

So he knocked, instead. If he heard a rumble, he decided he could probably run. Probably...

Ask to Enter

Rather than a rumble, he heard some grumbling, and from closer to the ground rather than past the door. When he looked down he finally spotted the gnome-guards, but before he could make any sort of assessment everything went black.

Ending I

He felt a bit woozy when he finally started stirring, but at least no more woozier than he felt after a good spar that resulted in a stint in the infirmary for a few hours. The face that was standing over him was shooting a glare his way, and without warning dropped a sack of something--he would later realize that it was candy--on his stomach.

"Watch it!" he grumbled, ignoring the look on the gnomes face at the inappropriate voice that was coming out of his petit undead girl golem. He didn't care at this point, and sat up, glaring right back at the little creature.

The gnome seemed to think better of commenting and went on with some sad excuse for an explanation, then promptly told him to scram before puttering away back to guarding the gates of whatever it was he'd stumbled across while on that path. Great. Now all he had to do was find his way back out of this damned maize maze...
