Aleksey, otherwise known as the Head Boy, arrived fashionably late to the table. He was directing the freshmen to their respective locations previously, but now that he’d done his share, he felt it appropriate to return to the table, a handful of students already settled in their seats. He was clad in the school uniform, a rich burgundy blazer with white top and black slacks, something that wasn’t mandatory on the first day, but something to help distinguish himself from the amassing hordes of new students. Aleksey gave no glances to the other students of the house, looking towards his seat and only his seat, the same seat he held for the years prior. It was the farthest seat from Varakov, particularly because he scorned the obnoxious volume, though he had no personal vendetta against him.
After pulling his seat back, he unbuttoned his blazer and rested his rear comfortably on the chair, scooting the seat in to a respectable distance. It was a feast, but he had a diet to maintain, so he wouldn’t consume anything extraneous. He settled for the Bourbon Chicken and Oven-Roasted Greek Potatoes, the fork in his right hand and knife in the left, cutting to appropriate sizes and proceeding to devour them individually. Aleksey ate uniformly, mouth firmly closed and with only subtle movements, careful not to allow any of the food to exit from his mouth. When he was through, he glanced at the glass. He took his glass with his left hand, his palm facing the ceiling, and the slender stem of the glass between his second and third finger, occasionally taking sips. |

“Salutations,” he said to Nikolai in his low yet clear voice, providing a subtle smile. When the new female introduced herself, he briefly scanned her; she had a guileless innocence to her, appearing to be with Cambridge Blue eyes and elegantly swept blonde hair, beauteously naïve, but such was only superficial. “It’s my genuine pleasure to welcome you to our house’s little table à manger.” He’d briefly spoken French to describe their dining table. Since they’d all gathered, he saw an opportunity to raise morale. Aleksey stood up from his seat, the glass in his left hand, a white gold watch and matching ring adorning that hand. “I propose a toast, to the illustrious year ahead of us, and the prosperity of our house.” Aleksey glanced around, intent on raising his glass at a time when the majority did, perhaps clinking the bell of his glass with a fellow student. |

As the Deputy Headmistress walked up to the front of the Grand Hall, Nicolas incinerated the remaining core of his apple with his thumb and index finger. It was practically the same speech every year, yet Vivian sat upright and attentive while Nicolas remained comfortably leaned back in his chair. Once the food appeared, they filled their plates with properly sized proportions of food for each food group.
They ate in silence until Nikolai broke it as he greeted the Head Boy of their dorm in his usual loud tone, causing Nicolas to scrunch his nose in discontent due to the noise. He turned his head, glancing over in Nikolai's direction. He then noticed another seated at their table, a female, one that he did not quite recognize and took a moment to study her before resuming to focus on his meal.
Moments later, Aleksey stood from his seat proposing a toast. In response, Vivian was the first to raise her glass, giving him a brief smile before taking a sip of her drink. Nicolas followed suit in raising his glass as well and even took it upon himself to clink glasses with a nearby student.
