Cabot followed along the river, Mathew flying over head. He normally navigated by the skies; he’d gotten very good at it over the years, and hardly ever went in the wrong direction. Today he wanted to get back to the sea however, and the easiest way to do that was to follow a river downhill. Rivers always emptied out into the sea.

The trees dappled the sun, but it was warm on his back nevertheless, and the smell of sweet grass was in his nostrils, the sound of the river splashing in his ears. All in all, it was a lovely day. Days like this were why he did what he did, why he travelled so far and so often. New sights, good weather, adventure! That’s what life was all about.

She had spent a large portion of the day coasting along the tree tops to examine the ground below. Her companion was off elsewhere, doing some scouting of it's own. Flying for long periods like this was long work though, and eventually, she decided she had to land and find some food.

A nearby river seemed like a good place to start. There at least she could wet her lips with a drink and see what sorts of fish might be around. Fish weren't her favorite meal though, so she wouldn't be diving into the water until it became her last resort. The water was sweet and clear, but there didn't seem to be many fish about. A few crayfish skittered about but they looked a bit too much like bugs for her tastes. Fish were bad enough. Nobody of her line should be reduced to eating bugs of all things. She followed the river upwards, looking over both sides of the bank for any sign that any sort of tasty creatures had passed by.

Humming birds were a favorite of hers. Just a little bite of heaven, but never enough to fill a stomach. Not that their prints could be found at the water's edge anyhow. There were other markings though, hooves and paws of all sizes had been pressed into the mud at some point. Very few seemed recent enough to follow up on though. She shrugged to herself then carried on forward. There was plenty of time. She wouldn’t feel desperate enough to go in for a fish until late the following day. Then again, this was fish… She was sure she could wait another two nights before she became quite that desperate.

She lifted her head and sniffed at the wind, then paused to listen. Her familiar had been instructed to find her before nightfall, but she always preferred to get an idea of when he’d be arriving long before he did. Right now though, neither his scent nor sound was carried to her by the wind.

A tail flick, then she folded her wings down over her side. She’d been told it had a cape like effect. A comment which made her laugh inwardly. What self respecting winged creature would burden it’s self with a cape? It was ludicrous to say the least. There were too many ways for a cape to get tangled up in one’s wings. It was too easy for a grounded opponent to grab it’s dangling bits and drag you down to the ground.

A noise up ahead made her pause, then turn to slip into the surrounding forest to wait and watch. She closed her eyes, all except one glowing orb on her shoulder. A stallion flightless and… A crow? This stranger was no prey of hers.

Apocrypha smiled.
