The stones clacked gently together as Arcadia carefully placed one next to another. She had searched for the perfect stones in a riverbed all morning, and carried back the ones she'd found with no insignificant amount of jaw and neck strain. As she was only able to carry them in her mouth, the flights had been many, but her wings were strong; long flights were the norm for her, and she had built muscle carrying things one at a time across distances.

Finally, after hours of searching and piling her chosen stones next to each other beneath a bush by the riverbank, Arcadia had begun her flights, starting with medium ones and working to larger ones before giving herself an easy finish with the little ones. All were as round and flat as she could find, worn smooth from the water that rushed over them every day. If creatures had lived under them, they had been too small for Arcadia to see, and that was where she drew the line for what she consciously disturbed; if it was too small to see, she tried not to feel guilty. She had too much guilt already.

Now, her stones were all laid out in a row near the middle of a small clearing, and her project was ready to be built. It would be a tower of black and grey-white rocks, alternating color and concentric. Carefully nudging the biggest rock, the white-grey base, to the center, Arcadia eyed it. She looked back at the rest of her rocks. One down, seven to go.

"Blue. Definitely needs blue. Or purple. But not this purple. Darker purple. Deeper purple. Maybe bluish purple? But not this purple. Needs blue or purple. Light purple?"

The words tumbled out of Morrigan with an almost rapid-fire precision as she walked around the base of a large birch tree. The words were mumbled more than spoken, mere mental notes accidentally spoken aloud out of habit. But that had always been Morrigan's way, when a 'creative mood' was upon her like it was now. The tree was her latest project, and one which she about which felt inordinately proud. Finding the perfect tree had taken time; she needed something large and commanding, something that could be seen from a distance and didn't necessarily 'blend in' to the surrounding trees. At the same time, it couldn't be too old or established a tree, because she needed something supple and flexible, something she could manipulate and break. Finding the perfect tree had nearly driven her into a frenzy, but this one had proved to be worth the wait. Tall and slim like the rest of its kind, the birch stood atop a small hillock, separated just enough from its fellows to serve Morrigan's purpose.

And more to the point, it was bendy.

Surveying the tree, Morrigan herself felt twin sentiments of pride and dissatisfaction; pride, because it was looking so perfect thus far, so in line with her creative vision. Dissatisfaction, because it was still incomplete, and because she was not sure just how she wanted to finish it. The majority of the tree's branches were either bent, cut, or broken; some of the thinner, softer branches had even been twisted or knotted together. And many of the breaks and cuts sported 'decoration'; colorful flowers or twists of leaves, feathers and skeins of hair hung alongside bones, bits of animal hide, and other pieces of ornamentation. To the casual onlooker, the sight could be anything from confusing to horrific, but in Morrigan's eyes, it was beautiful.

But it would be better when she was finished. Snorting, she took a step back and eyed the twisted upper branch she'd just severed. It hung limply, the tip twisting slightly in the light afternoon breeze. She liked how it looked so far, but it definitely needed some blue/purple.

Well, there was no blue/purple to be found here, so she needed to find some. With one last thoughtful glance at the tree, she took to the air in a whirl of color.

~~~
The problem with an aerial search in a mostly wooded area was that it could be hard to see things from so high up. However, Morrigan wasn't daunted; she was looking for a specific color family, and she needed enough of it to be visible from the ground. Whatever she ended up with, if she could see it from the air it would be be sufficient for her purposes. So she flew along brimming with confidence, scanning the ground below her for...Purple!
There, down below her, she spied a lovely bit of purple. Light purple, yes, but perhaps it would work all the same; she would just have to shuffle a couple other decorative elements around a bit...
Already contemplating the best way to rearrange her project, Morrigan began coasting down to the ground, It was a testament to her focus that it was only in the last few feet of her descent that it registered just what the purple thing was: her sister's hat!
