Train, they'd said. So train she would do. Gretchen was on the training fields with weapon summoned and a sibilant voice crooning in her ear. She was working through drills, or attempting to, following Devika's couching as best as she could. This usually required a fair amount of trial and error, many apologies on behalf of the trainee, and an irritated naga in the poor girl's head.

It didn't help any that the sun had come out to blaze over head, making the Death uncomfortable as well as inadequate. It'd been a little on the cool side when she'd left that morning, so long pants had been paired with a hoodie layered over a thin t-shirt. The chill had lasted maybe an hour.

Devi, come oooooon.

She was hot, she was tired, and she was really thirsty. Surely they could make time for a break.

(You're ssskills are weak. Continue.)

No fair!

For a time, Oliver had been very hesitant to cross the training field. In the state his last mission had left him, and with the poor results he faced while trying to keep his head during matches, he had opted for straight out avoidance rather than take the usual shortcut. It was not a great coping tactic, but it helped him in the short run.

The nerves were slowly starting to wear down though, and the return to his old trails was getting easier and easier. Heading straight through the training field was a good way to become more comfortable without adding extra stress.

Today he made to cut straight through, but that was when he saw a new face making a steadfast attempt at training hard. She was starting to look a little worn down... In the interest of not seeing her again later in the infirmary, he thought perhaps he should check up on her. Just in case.

Oliver gathered up every scrap of courage before finally approaching. "Um... H-hello... I-it is getting pretty warm out, h-have you been drinking enough?"

Gretchen was drawn away from the inner hiss of her weapon by a soft voice off to the side, and she blinked curiously at him as he approached her, straightening up and holding her staff across her shoulders. "Hi, aren't you a sweetheart." She'd meet a few people by now, and some were nice, some where not. This guy, whoever he was, fell easily and neatly into the former category.

"I think I have, and I have a water bottle over there," she nodded towards the bass of a dummy and a half empty plastic bottle sitting at it's base. "Thanks though, for the concern. It really is sweet."

She grinned at him in obvious appreciation before pale features lit up as an idea struck her. "Hey! Would you spar with me?" The staff dropped, held down at her side now as she leaned forward. "It'll be a lot better if I have a real opponent." Her partner, shockingly, said nothing. Her silence a mark of approval. "Pleeeeease?"

Oliver's first reaction was to blush and look away, at his feet, the water bottle by the training dummy, anywhere but at the girl in front of him. With how personalities ran on this island his question could have been purely out of self interest, but his timid nature wouldn't allow him to shrug off a compliment. Nor could he accept it gracefully.

He opened his mouth, closed it, and rubbed at the bridge of his nose as he subsequently tried to regain some composure.

"I-I can, i-if you'd like..." Oliver finally replied, bypassing all of the 'sweet' stuff entirely. It was easier to focus on the offer of a match. Not that he wanted to fight at all, but if she was a trainee, maybe there was some knowledge to be gained from his own dubious time and practice on the island.

The moment he willed it so, Jökul was in his hands and ready for an attack, but Oliver was clearly not up to making the first attack.

Well that was kind of adorable. Gretchen tipped her head as color rushed over his cheeks, making the scar on his nose stand out rather starkly, but that was cute all on it's own. His mouth opened, but nothing came out before it closed again, and the Death had to draw up a hand to press over her lips to keep from chuckling at him.

But he did agree, which she had begun to suspect he wouldn't, and she seemed to brighten immediately, smile as bright as a seventy watt light bulb in a dark room. "Really? Thank you!"

"Wooh-" That was a really wicked looking weapon. Glee turned into surprise, boarding on apprehension, but Devika gave her a mental shove, hissing in her ear.

She didn't quite flinch, but she did bring her staff up, a little less awkwardly this time, but certainly still not comfortable. She waited, expecting the young man to make the first move, but when he didn't she took that as a silent invitation to charge in herself.

It wasn't a very powerful hit. The staff came around in a glancing knock against the other hunter's shoulder, bouncing off his shield almost harmlessly.

"So what's your name?"

Despite the weak hit, it might have been a bit of an ego boost just watching Oliver flinch back, his free arm raised protectively. He immediately felt silly. Intermediates as a whole had probably been a lot cooler before he joined their ranks, this trainee just had the bad luck to run into him instead of someone more impressive or inspiring.

"O-Oliver, um… Oliver Keeley," he stammered, feeling the embarrassed heat in his cheeks. "Y-you?"

Almost as an afterthought the axe was lifted, and then Oliver pulled it into a heavy horizontal slash. Gaining momentum was the hardest part of his battle. After that, all he had to do was keep it moving.

When the first attack actually collided, he was taken aback by the force involved. "S-sorry!"

How was she supposed to try to hit him when he was being stuttery and adorable? Surely there were rules about this sort of thing! "Gretchen Howard," she offered with a grin and a wink, swinging the so staff above her head to bring it down into what she hoped was a better grip. Devika wasn't hissing corrections at her, so she was hopeful.

Compared to the wicked looking axe the young man was wielding, her staff looked down right harmless, but that wouldn't stop her from trying!

Though it probably wasn't going to be a long spar if he kept hitting like that, wow. Gretchen yelped, hopping back and away, but she seemed more startled than hurt. "Heavy hitter," she'd chirp, chuckling softly as she darted in to give him a jab to the belly with the end of her staff.

Oliver squeaked and flinched away, the blade of his axe burying itself in a cloud of dust at his feet. He was the worst at sparring. The worst ever.

"P-pleased to meet you," he finally stammered out. When he stepped backwards, he eyed the staff warily. Even though his axe was much the same way, it could be hard to judge the range of longer weapons. Sometimes he wished Jökul were a bow of some sort. Then he could stand back and keep his distance instead of charging head-long into the fight.

The kid began to wonder if his embarrassment would ever go away. "Um… H-how long have you been awake for? I haven't seen you around before…" Polite conversation, maybe that would take the edge off.

Wow, timid was sort of an understatement for this guy. Gretchen was almost sorry for having challenged him. Almost. Certainly he had to be used to this by now, if the trim on his coat was anything to go on. Sparring seemed to the thing to do between other duties, the best way to prepare one's self for the eventuality of missions.

In his hands, the axe wasn't quite so scary, but she kept that opinion to herself. He was cute, she didn't want to make him feel bad. "I've been up for about month now. Yourself?"

She wondered idly if carrying on a casual conversation while trying to beat the snot out of each other was something you just got used to with time. For Gretchen it was just a little odd still. Lips twisting in concentration, she darted forward again to take a swing at him, low this time, going for the back of his legs with the heavier end of her staff.

"Almost a y-EEEP!" Oliver yelped as the staff caught him right behind the knees, the efficient blow sending him toppling backwards. He landed hard on his back, banging his head against the hard packed ground.

His reaction was quick, before any time could pass he had rolled back to his feet with the axe held out unsteadily in front of him. He staggered a bit in an almost comical manner, and then steadied himself.

"That was... ow... really good," Oliver muttered, letting go of the axe with one hand to rub the sore spot on the back of his head.

She hadn't honestly expected that to work. Oliver went down, and Gretchen couldn't help but blink down at him, startled and wide eyed. "Wow, um. Sorry?" A sharp hiss from Devika made her wince, cringing, and she tightened her hold on her staff. "I mean. um." Nothing, there was nothing to say here. Well, except. "Thank you." He had complimented her, after all.

He was on his feet now, and the serpent in her mind was egging her onward. Lips pressing into a thin line she made her move, swinging the staff like a club and only barely clipping his shoulder.

Oliver was mostly able to shrug away from her next attack, and retaliated with his own. It was a bit shaky, but that was not necessarily due to the bonk on the head he had just taken. His track record so far was pretty poor.

His swing felt more like a warmup, getting the axe moving rather than aiming for some serious damage.

That ax was heavy. He didn't have to do much more than swing the same thing, and she felt it crashing into her shield hard enough to stagger. An almost casual blow, she wondered what it'd feel like if he actually got a a piece of her.

Probably better not to find out.

(Precisssssely.)

So she'd stay light on her feet, try to keep out of reach.

Oliver wouldn’t let her back away. A look of concentration crossed his face, hours of practice had helped make him nimble when his jumpy nerves were not triggered. Her avoidance was met with a lunge and quicker slash than the last, the momentum built upon his previous swing.

Although he winced, and it looked like he wanted to apologize again, Oliver remained silent and on guard against her next attack.
