Amber eyes cast a concerned gaze upon the pale form deep in slumber not too far away. Though Ranulf lived a sheltered, albeit somewhat reclusive, life he wasn't ignorant to the ways of the world. He was quiet, never really one for words, but he was ever watchful and ever listening. To be honest, Ranulf was fairly certain that an extremely large portion of those he had interacted with in the past considered him to somewhat of a simpleton due to his inability to articulate adequately. If it had not been for the troubling thoughts running through his mind Ranulf would have chuckled at the though of others thinking of him as ignorant; oh, so wrong they were. The only being to ever treat him as though they believed him to be intelligent lay before him. But....
The form twitched, kicking out violently. Ranulf often pondered what it was that his brother dreamed of. Despite his prior optimism on the situation Ranulf had given up on denial and had instead resolved to try and help as much as possible. No one else had picked up yet on the tiny tell tale hints and Ranulf wasn't about to blab. His brother had been through so much in life already, he didn't think the loss of his family a second time would leave him left with much to live for. He often wondered whether or not his brother would even be in this predicament if he had never been shunned. But everything happened for a reason, despite whether or not it was apparent or clear at first. Ranulf just hopped that his brother was strong enough to pull through this, and come out on the other side a better stallion because of it.
He rose to his hooves and softly stepped closer to his brother. In the moonlight the pale coat shined like silver, but it was the darker parts that Ranulf wished to inspect. They, like most shadows in the night, were as black as pitch without the suns golden rays to illuminate them. The proofs were there, in plain sight, despite the darkness' attempt to obscure them. Tiny red and brown dried flecks speckled the lips of the male before him; ivory slivers and crimson remained lodged in the cracks and crevasses of the massive hooves. He had done it again, Ranulf thought. A frown spread across his maw as a deep sadness filled him for the needless loss. The incidences had decreased in frequency, but had yet to cease altogether. Ranulf wouldn't give up though. He wouldn't let the darkness win.

Navy nostrils flared as the scented the air. Fear was abundant and a welcoming smell to behold. In a flash Azzan cackled with glee and set off at a full run after his prey. Shouts of terror, of panic, and of despair filled the night air as his target pleaded into the night to be spared. The cries fell on deaf ears though. Adrenaline and joy filled the stallion as he grew ever closer, the thrill simply intoxicating. The smaller being knew well to run, and was quite adequate in his maneuvers to try and throw the perusing stallion. It was futile though. The larger stride of the seasoned hunter quickly caught him up to the fleeing creature. Azzan's heart raced as the being came within his reach. It was odd though - why couldnt he make out what it was that he was chasing? He was but feet from it and all he could see was a brown and white blur. He shook his head; it didnt matter now. He slowed a bit letting the creature gain a bit of distance, a slight glint of hope that they may survive, before increasing once more to snap at them with eager jaws. The terrified shrieks that erupted from the sudden realization of Azzans proximity sent a flutter through Azzan. He continued his chase for a while until his prey began to show signs of fatigue. The pale stallion leaped, landing right in front of the creature he had given chase to. It delighted him to see their panic and confusion as they scrambled to halt and turn direction. It never failed though, they always stumbled and fell before him in perfect striking distance. Azzan didnt have the fangs of most meat eaters, he didnt have claws. He had learned to use what he did have though. Like lightning he lunged, grabbing as much flesh and bone as he could between his blunted teeth, before biting down as forcefully as he could and whipping his head from side to side. Cracks and pops from bones breaking and tendons snapping were drowned out by screams of pure pain. He whipped his head a few more times before flinging the creature to the ground. A pity, none of the shards had broken through the skin. Again he flung and shook the creature like a rag-doll. And again. And again.... And then there was silence as the limp form fell to the ground with a soft thud. It couldnt move, it's eyes were glazed over and tongue lolled without control as blood dripped from it's nose and mouth. Azzan raised his head and laughed. He stepped around it a few times, examining his work, before rearing back and bringing himself down as forcefully as he could. Ebony hooves landed with a sickening crunch on the one set of bones that had yet to be pulverized; the skull. Azzan closed his eyes and bent down to lap at the crimson fluid and soft grey brain tissue. The smell consumed the stallion, and the taste was exquisite. He smacked his lips, pleased with himself despite his stomach churning. He tried to take a step back from his kill but found his hooves tangled. He opened his eyes and looked at them. They were wrapped in what seemed to be a cream colored... Hair? It was hard to tell from all the blood. Azzan blinked a few times, a little confused by his sudden ability to see what it was he had killed. Perhaps it had just been a minor issue, something stuck in his eye that was now gone, that had caused the creature to be blurred up to this point. Azzan shrugged, it didnt matter now. He went to bend down and continue his meal when the color black peeking out from beneath his hooves caught his attention. He leaned in closer, curious as to what it was, and lifted his hoof to reveal what was beneath it.

That moment, though it was only a second or two, seemed to Azzan to last an eternity. Time did not exist. As the blood splattered ebony hoof moved away from its resting spot it revealed a black splash on the tip of the beings nose leading to white. The white transitioned to a brown mask of sorts going from the jaw to where the eye would have been. A halo of cream hair, tipped with black, lay beneath caked in mud and blood and other various bits of tissue. A single streak of brown ran through the mess. A chill struck the stallion. Azzan couldnt breath. He couldnt move. He couldnt think. The only discernible sound to the stallions ears what the pounding and ever increasing rhythm of his own heartbeat. There was no doubt as to not only what, but who, was beneath his hooves.

Ranulf.

The world went black.

If the shear volume of the pale figures bellow hadn't startled Ranulf then the ensuing flail of neck, head, and hooves most certainly would have. It was the first time in his life that Ranulf actually saw pure fear and terror in his brother. He bolted to his brothers side as the large stallion came crashing to the ground, flailing. "Azzan Ok! Azzan Alright!" He shouted, trying to calm the comparatively giant stallion.

He didnt know when he started screaming, and at first he didnt even realize that it was he that the sound was coming from. The world had all of a sudden come to light once again, but all that was in Azzan's mind was his brothers bloody form. He was trying to run, trying to get away but wasnt going anywhere. He could still hear his brother yelling that it was okay.

Wait.

Azzan attempted to calm his mind and body as his brothers face and form loomed into view. His voice was clear and crisp, not an echo from the past but actually coming from him right that very moment. Azzan's eyes went wide as he realized that it was indeed Ranulf standing before him. Tears began to well in the colorless eyes as they blinked rapidly, unbelieving.

Ranulf shifted his hooves anxiously as Azzan slowly settled. He was still laying on the ground, but he was looking right at Ranulf. The way that he was staring, looking in disbelief, sent a chill down Ranulf's spine for a brief moment. He knew he wouldnt ask Azzan about the dream; he knew that if it was horrific enough to make the unstable stallion attempt to flee in fear that he wanted no part of it. But he knew from that gaze that, whatever it was, it featured him. Cautiously he moved forward and touched his nose to Azzans cheek. "It alright, Azzan. Only a dream. " He moved behind the fallen form, draping his blanket of a mane over his brothers neck as he lowered himself to the ground. Though he was smaller he could at least try to offer his brother as much comfort as he possibly could. Ranulf rested his head over his brothers neck, right behind his ears, to whisper to Azzan quietly. "You never need fear. Nothing bad happened, nor will. I right here, Azzan. I no go anywhere."

A... Dream... Thinking back on it Azzan knew there wasn't any way that he would be strong enough to raise and shake his brother like a rag-doll, but... He clenched his eyes shut for a moment, trying to will the vision from his mind and focus on Ranulf being right there by his side. It didnt help, and the welled up tears now had reason to fall from their perch. The part that scared Azzan the most was that it felt so real. The warmth o his brother laying by him soothe him some, and as Ranul's head rested on him he relaxed into it. The world began to fade into the darkness once more as Ranulf whispered in his ear. Heavy, tired lids fluttered closed. Though Azzan tried he could not stay awake. Just as Azan way about to slip away once more a final though surfaced in response to Ranulfs last words, and though he had not the energy to speak it the though was there all the same.

'That is what I am afraid of...."
