Quote: Nightvine does his best to help a friend with something during the day! He holds out as much as possible to help a friend who is sick and needs taking care of. Can he last until noon when the doctor arrives? Mossflower hated being sick. Usually she sucked it up and powered through, refusing to be brought down by a sniffle. But this was far more than a little cold. It was a fever and she hadn’t slept all night and her head felt so heavy she was surprised it wasn’t dragging on the ground. So she sought out the comfort of her old home, arriving at the cucumber shaped house completely out of energy and instantly collapsed on top of Yawn’s pillow pile. She’d already called Tiger Balm and asked for assistance but the herbalist wouldn’t be able to make it for a few hours, which meant Mossflower would simply have to put up with it until then.

It was about two hours to sundown and Nightvine was doing his best to make it home this time and not fall asleep in some random person's yard. Having made it past the doorway, he saw someone else was ahead of him and in Mom's pillows. It was his grown sister, Mossflower! "Whoa, what are you doing here?" he asked, putting down his pack and pulling off his scarf by the door. "I thought Dad said you lived way across town!"

"Mmph," Mossflower replied before she rolled over and took her head out of a pillow. "Hello Nightvine. I do. I just... wanted to be home for a bit." She blinked bleary eyes at him. She desperately wanted a drink of water or maybe some hot lemon honey tea but couldn't imagine dragging herself to the kitchen. "I'm not feeling very well." Mossflower smiled at her brother as best she could. "Try not to get too close or you might catch something."

"Well, I think I've gotta get close," Nightvine said, putting a hoof to her forehead like Dad did. "Golly, you're on fire! Don't go anywhere, I'm gonna get you some water and some medicine!" Nightvine did his best to hurry, he looked anxiously at the clock and out the window. The stars were still out, but barely. "Golly~!" he bounced, and ran to the medicine cabinet. "This isn't gonna be fun for anyone!"

“Thank you so much, Nightvine.” As he ran off, Mossflower’s head dropped back to the pillow but she already felt a little better just having someone around.

Nightvine put water in the electric kettle, ran around for a bowl and a pot to put in a can of chicken soup. What else did Dad give him when we was sick? "I brought you my bear," he said, thinking the teddy bear had mystical healing powers. "And my quilt. I'm making you soup." Nightvine pried the cork off his dad's cold medicine and poured it into a spoon. "This stuff tastes gross, but Dad said it's good for when you gots fever," he said, putting the spoon to Moss's mouth. "Open up, here comes the train. Choo choo~"

Abruptly Mossflower wanted to burst into tears but they were happy ones. Instead she just smiled at her brother and tucked the bear under her arm. "You really are the best." It was so nice to have him fussing over her when she was sick that she didn't even protest about the cold medicine, just opened wide and swallowed a big spoonful of the liquid. She coughed a couple of times. "It does taste really bad." Syrcaid Let's get through this one before you go! ;D

"I don't know why Dad keeps buying it when there's better stuff, he says 'why change what works?'," Nightvine groaned. "But there's other stuff that works!" Nightvine glanced at the green grandfather clock (of course, it's green) in the hallway. Only half an hour until his eyes would start shutting on their own. "Oh, no! I'd better make sure your soup makes it in time!", he said and he rushed towards the kitchen.

Syrcaid More beautiful goodies! Q_Q <3 *is prettiest pirate now* "I suppose it's not so bad, if you know it's making you better," she said with little grimace. Soup would definitely help get the taste from her mouth. Mossflower knew her brothers schedule almost as well as he did and she watched him run back to the kitchen, hoping he didn't fall asleep with the pot still on the stove. Maybe I should get up and check.

(( I am scum! Please help me finish this. *o* )) "I hope you like potatoes... and carrots and onions and..." Nightvine said, bringing a tray with soup, crackers, and some water on a tray/table that could be carried on his back. "I threw in every vegetable that Dad said was good for colds. So it's kind of a vegetable medley with salt." Nightvine crouched and the table set itself over him as he carefully crawled out. "Check out this TV dinner tray! I didn't even know we had these until I went into the pantry to restock. Dad thinks of everything!"

She had meant to get up and see how Nightvine was going in the kitchen but between one blink and the other, she fell into a doze and only woke up when her brother returned with the tray of soup. With the quilt around her shoulders and the teddy tucked under an arm, she sat up carefully. "I’m sure it will be wonderful," she assured him. It certainly smelled good. With how wonderful she was being, it could have been sludge and she would have happily devoured the whole thing. Tangles really did think of anything. Probably because if he didn’t, it was unlikely anything would ever get done. Not that Yawn didn’t try but she’d fallen asleep on one too many grocery trip that she was forbidden from doing it on her own anymore.

(( A billion years later...)) "Eat up! You can't nap until it's all gone," Nightvine sat down next to Mossflower and put a large cloth napkin on her neck gently. "Doctor's orders! I'm not going anywhere until I know you're fed and cozy with a full belly. That's what Dad did for us, that's what I'm gonna do for you." Nightvine sat next to Mossflower expectantly, but eyed the clock warily. "Until sunrise, at least," he said nervously. "I won't be of any use to anyone once the sun comes up."

"Okay," was all she said and there was a whole avalanche of feelings behind that one word, so much gratitude and love for her brother it was overwhelming. Mossflower took a sip and made a happy sound. "Delicious." She did her best to finish the bowl, even if she did feel a little sick right at the end, her stomach just that little bit too full. "There. It’s all gone." She showed him her efforts and then nudged him. "I think we should both sleep now. I’m sure Tiger Balm will let herself in." It was honestly an effort to keep her eyes open at this point. She still felt horrible but just having Nightvine here taking care of her made all the aches less fierce.

(( I am scum. Total space trash. Let's wrap this one up! XD )) "Good," said Nightvine. "Now I can fall asleep knowing that you'll be okay." Nightvine pulled a blanket over Mossflower's shoulders. He made sure there were plenty of pillows and fresh water for her to drink if she got thirsty. Helping his sister gave him a huge sense of satisfaction. Was it selfish to feel this way? It hardly felt like work to take care of someone he cared for. It felt more like... Loyalty for one's family. Realization set into Nightvine's face. He'd helped because he didn't want to abandon someone in need. It felt like the right thing to do, but it also felt like something he wanted to do. It wasn't just duty, it was voluntary and because he loved his family even if they didn't talk as often as they should. That moment he realized it felt good to stick together.

“Thank you Nightvine.” The words were just a puff of breath and hard to hear as she sunk into and deep sleep. She would be forever grateful for her brother and his tender care and would endeavour to return the favour in the future.
