Penny Dreadful wriggled out of the chimney with a small plume of soot and wrote rapidly in a tiny notebook that had been sitting on the edge of the chimney crown. "Clearly a man could not slide down this with a large sack of presents, there is no way with these dimensions. However it could be a good place to stash a dead body if the home is abandoned. Hmmm..." Mind ticking with ideas, Penny hopped onto the root and did a full body shake, flicking off dirt and soot. It was hard to tell if she got most of it off with her dark fur and at night, but that didn't bother her. Gathering her saddle bags, she paused to make a few more notes in her notebook and flittered down from the roof to a lamp post, the post to a garden wall, and from the wall to the ground.

Nightvine had been looking about for mushrooms, but they were hard to find and the earth was more and more frozen to start digging near a garden wall. He found he'd been hungrier than he expected and the pantry was completely empty. He had hoped to fix the problem himself by gathering food, but the winter was colder this year than usual. It was then that his eyes, adjusted for the night, looked up and saw a peculiar shape gently bounce down from a brick chimney to the lampost, then again to the wall of the garden he was in, and then down to the little stone path. Nightvine propped his forelegs along the wall and looked across to a winged Phony. It wasn't the sort of wings he'd come to know. They weren't all feathery, but rather insect like. "What kinda Phony are you?" he blurted, curiosity overtaking his manners.

Nightvine's sudden appearance actually gave Penny quite a fright, though her only external reaction was her eyes widening and her wings buzzing loudly for a moment. She turned to look up at the blue colt. "Hmm..?" how odd, were there really phony who didn't know what flutters were. "I'm a flutter phony, more specifically, a variant called Springwing. My name is Penny." she nodded, a few of her curls falling into her face.

"Even if I never found out how you are, I'd still call ya pretty," Nightvine laughed jovially. "My name's Nightvine and I've never seen a flutter phony. I'm asleep most of the day and only wake up at night, so I don't get to see many people." Nightvine's stomach chose that moment to grumble loudly. "Oh-heh," he blushed. "You'll hafta excuse my stomach, I'm really hungry and our pantry was empty. So I'm out digging up food, but... I haven't had much luck. Dad usually has food left out, but he must have been planning on doing the grocery run during the day."

Whoa wait..did he just call her pretty? Penny felt weird, her face got really warm and she felt a little extra light. "Err...T..thank you.." well that felt weird to say, why was everything weird now? Did this happen all the time when you were called pretty or only the first time? Penny's mind tick tick ticked away at this new feeling when the growling noise broke her focus. "Ah." she said, nodding her head. "I think I can help then." The leggy filly hopped onto a nearby trash can and then hopped up onto the top of the wall next to Nightvine's forelegs. "I can't really fly yet." she offered in the way of a question he hadn't asked but might have wondered. "But my wings are great for a little bit of lift or a little bit of float for hopping." With that she made the hop into the colt's backyard. On the grass, she sat, unbuckling her saddle bag from her body and pulling it in front of her. "I don't know what you like.." she said and just began laying out the snacks she'd packed; a couple of apples, a plastic box of roasted pumpkin seeds, a few packaged mini string cheeses, and bologna sandwich she'd made herself. "...but feel free to have whatever you like." Penny opened the plastic container and took a hoof full of seeds, munching contently.

"Oh, I couldn't take all your food," Nightvine said. "The apple will hold me until I can find something else to eat before I fall asleep again. It's kinda like a spell, I think. I always have too much to do before I can even figure out what happens to me when the sun comes up." Nightvine didn't hesitate to trot over to her and sit down beside her. He couldn't help himself, he compared his overall size to hers and took at good look at her wings. "Gosh," he said. "You're littler than me. Are all flutters littler than me?"

Penny felt a little shy. No phony really stayed too close to her, as she had a reputation of being creepy, so for him to sit right down next to her was a bit of a shock. "I think dad is bigger than you are now," she said, taking the sandwich and pulling the two cut halves apart, pressing one of them into his hooves. "But when you grow you will be bigger than him most likely. Certainly much bigger than I." She blushed a little when he looked her over carefully, curious to her anatomy. She listened about his "affliction" which much interest. What a fascinating form of narcolepsy."Is it very troublesome, the sleeping?" she asked between bites of sandwich which had a slightly spicy asian mustard her grandmother imported just for the family.

"Oh, yeah, it gets in the way a lot," Nightvine nodded. "Like... I can't go to birthday parties or regular school or to the movies because I everyone else is asleep." He shrugged and gave a little sigh before biting into the apple again. "'S no big deal anymore, I get to do things no one else does. I get to see the flowers that bloom at night, all the bats out eating bugs, and there are still lots of animals out looking for food like I am!"

"School is over rated." Penny declared, tearing open a string cheese. "Miss Glory is nice but some of the other foals are just....not." She sighs and nibbles her snack for a long moment, thinking. "The night is pretty nice though. It's so much more quiet and peaceful. The air always smells so much nicer and there is no phony else to bother you if you're doing something important even when they don't understand how it's important." She grumbled the last part. A long pause. "I've seen you before actually, a few times out and about." she admitted. "You prolly don't notice me, I didn't want to bother you."

"Well, it's not so much being at school that sounds like fun," Nightvine shrugged. "It's that you get to see so many people all at once who are your own age. If I'm lucky, I get to see one person each night. Mostly, all I see are raccoons and stray animals." Nightvine looked surprised at Penny. She'd seen him? Someone was actually looking? "I'm sorry, I'm not usually expecting anyone to be looking at me," Nightvine admitted. "If I'd've known you were there I would have invited you to dig for night crawlers with me!" Nightvine put the apple core into the bucket he had been carrying with him. "Gonna use this for compost for my earthworms," he said proudly. "It was very nice of you to share with me. I'll be slightly less hungry now, maybe this way I'll make it until tomorrow night. Hopefully be then, my dad will have restocked. Thinkin' of leaving him a note if I can get home in time."

Penny peered into the bucket, and deposited her bread crusts into it as well. She wasn't allowed to use the knives to cut them off. She gathered the last of snacks back into her bag, except for a cheese string which she set next to Nightvine. "The night is long and cold, and a new snack will be needed before the dawn." She firmly nodded. Saddle bag back on, she surveyed her surroundings. Everything was too tall for her to hop upon, so with a small bow, she walked over to the yard's gate and gave it a kick to open it. Turning, she said; "Next time, you bring the snacks. I'm sure our night time wanderings will cause our paths to cross again. I look forward to new conversations." With a swish of curls and a small buzzing of wings, the tiny flutter slipped through the opening and vanished into the night.

(( Wrapping this one up! )) "Thanks, you bet I will! It was nice of you to share with me," Nightvine called off after her. He watched her move along in quiet admiration. It was nice to have someone kind enough to share their meal with him and at this hour of the night. Nightvine would never forget her and her willingness to share with a stranger. At least the next time they'd visit, they'd be sharing as friends. Nightvine learned that not only were there generous people in the world, but also that they came in all shapes and sizes. He was finding more and more how much more he'd need to be prepared for things like this. It was his turn for the food, after all.
