A middle-aged man, swarthy and well grisled, sat down next to Otto, smoking a cigar. "Hey, kid. Name's Mary Worth, I'm the new Life Assistant and the first thing you should know about Clarice, god rest her soul, is that she didn't get a grave when she died. You know why that is?" He spoke amiably, but looked at the younger man with a world weary concern.

Woah! He showed up. Otto looked at the man with some childish admiration, all the while inching away from the vile cigar smoke. "She didn't..?" He quickly put the facts together in his head to reach a hypothesis.

"Uhm.. if she didn't get a grave, then that means she did somethin' Deus didn't take too kindly on, right?" He was uncertain, but that seemed somewhat logical. "Did she break some taboo?" Maybe that was why it was dangerous to openly admit being interested in her past work.

"From what I've been told," Mary explained grimly, "...she was some sort of goddess last year. Buncha people ended up in something we're calling the Tear, and got a glimpse of what she'd been working on. And maybe a good idea of where she was gonna end up doing to everyone on this Island. Namely: transplant everyone into special golems and kill of their bodies, so everyone'd basically be immortal. Creepy as all hell, but her heart was in the right place, y'know? When she woke up, she went and used her research to give both Merlin and Excalibur near perfect golem bodies that allowed them to escape into the world and leave us defenseless, and then died for the effort."

With a heavy sigh he finished off his drink and hailed for another. "So that, is why you are nosing into some serious ******** s**t asking about looking into her work."

"Woah..." Otto took a moment to let it all in. He'd always thought Clarice was good and level headed. But turning everyone into immortal golems? Sure, he hated to see friends and comrades die. And he didn't want to lose anyone anymore. So that was why she showed him all of that? To make him see her side? Or to trick him into finishing her heretic experiments.

"I didn't realize it was that bad." Otto murmured back, scratching at his glass nervously. "So she's the reason Deus lost them." Merlin and Excalibur in immortal golems? That was super bad news. He just thought they'd manifested their own bodies, or at the least just used normal golems. This was a whole lot worse, after all.

And to think, he'd nearly fell for it. Story of his life; First Sam, now Clarice. Why did he trust people so easily? He should have known better.

"s**t.. That was stupid." He said of himself, running a hand through his hair with a huff. He was embarrassed, and a little mad at himself. He was lucky Mary was the one who intercepted his sleuthing.
