Determination, thy name was Aleda.
Sure, strangers might laugh to hear that description. After all, how determined could a small, slightly pudgy Usdia mare be? She wasn't anything exceptional to look at; not tall or strong, not svelte or crafty. At first, second, and even third glance, she was completely conventional; the sort of good-natured sidekick that everyone wanted and no one really wanted to be. But it was only strangers who could make that mistake; even acquaintances, if asked, could attest to the steel beneath the surface when it came to Aleda. It wasn't that she was catty or fierce; quite the opposite, in fact. She was good natured and merry, almost to the point of a caricature. But the steel was there, obvious when she had set her mind to a task. And these days, boy did she have a task!
It had taken her a long time to figure out what was missing in her life, likely because her life had been so pleasant. Empty, but pleasant. She'd had her routine, she had her father; once in a while, she even saw her brothers and her mother. But that was all there had been; no friends, not even an enemy, and no love interest. Heck, she hadn't even had a neighbor boys to tease her when she was growing up!
It was probably because of this lack of interest that it had taken Aleda so long to realize there was something missing. After all, how can you miss something you don't even know exists? But finally, one day, she woke up to the reality of the situation: she was a grown mare, and she was alone. No mate, no children, no possibility of either...and all at once, just as swiftly as that realization came, she was in the throes of an intense loneliness. She didn't want to be a spinster, darn it! She was a charming, pretty (if pudgy), and had a lot to offer a stallion; it wasn't right that she was alone.
But after she'd spent some time feeling sorry for herself, she was able to figure out part of the problem. How was she supposed to meet the love of her life if she'd never met a stallion she wasn't related to? Once she figured this out, the path became clear: she simply needed to get out in the world and find one! Easy peasy. Except for just one little problem; in all her time roaming 'the world at large', she'd only met mares so far! Nice mares, mares who were at the very least polite, and at the very most interested in sharing her mission; but they were mares all the same. Talk about your complications!
