"Good thing I'm gay, then!" said Ian cheerfully. "Or, well, really I just don't care about gender, but that's beside the point, and you don't need to know all about my fun homo times."
He pushed himself to his feet, stretching his limbs and turning his neck this way and that to work the kinks out. "Fine, fine," Ian said loftily. "The plebian is leaving the palace and His Royal Highness now, I get the picture. You can get whatever rest you need now."
Ian made his way to the door, stopped, waffled for a moment, sighed, and finally turned around again. He reached a hand into his pocket, pulled out the letter that had been missing from Jack's desk, and slid it back onto the desk without a word.
"Thanks, Jack," he said, and then slipped out - but not before calling back out behind him, "If it all goes well proposing, I'll buy you a ******** coffee shop."
