The struggle for companionship between Swiftmane and Alcyon had come to it's end, almost two years ago. Swiftmane had been hung up on a stallion that was never to return. The stallion that left her pregnant and alone, to flee to a new land. Alcyon had been the one that was there for her when he wasn't. Through the pregnancy, he had been a shoulder to lean on, and a friend. Not even her own family, gave the full support that he had. When the two girls were born, he had been a father to them. There was no other option to him, but to take them under his wing. Alcyon gave them everything he could, as he felt they deserved. They did not choose to have their biological father abandon them. And to Swift? He was still a friend. Her minds eye forever clouded, as she clung to the false hope of her lost lover. She was blind to the love that was right in front of her!
After Swifts girls were grown, one decided to pursue her biological father. She loved Alcyon, but needed closure for the gap that her other father had left in her mind. It didn't help that her own mother clung to the idea of him so much. The other daughter had followed her, to make sure she didn't get into trouble. Though she didn't agree with her. Alcyon was her father, and no other.
This left a fiery yearn in Swiftmanes heart. What if something had happened to him all this time? What if he had been waiting for her? One morning, she woke up and looked over to the soft sand fur of the stallion that slept not too far away. She still saw him as just a friend. Without a goodbye, she had left. She ran as fast as she could, as if the break of dawn would stop her if she didn't. It was selfish, and childish. She saw neither of these things. She lied to herself, thought what she needed to, to senselessly follow after a long dead dream. He had been her friend since birth. It was hard to let go, and quite frankly, she didn't want to. Stubbornness became a skill she practiced well!

Alcyon had woke that morning, alone. That story, can be found here: A Mission, where he set out to find his one true love. It didn't matter that she didn't show love for him. He waited for the day that she would admit to herself that she loved Alcyon. If that day didn't come, he would still be waiting. She was the only mare for him. That was solidified by being the adopted father to her young. His heart ached a happy ache, with the love he had for his three girls, Swift, Quicken, and Kaycie.
When he set out, he had found Quicken first. From there, he had returned to seeking out his Swift. He seemed to always be one step behind her though. Alcyon didn't loose hope!
The day he found Swiftmane again, his heart near broke. He wanted to protect her from harm, and he had failed. There before him, she laid, broken, and wounded. Not a physical ailment, but one of great torment that comes from a fallen heart. Swiftmane lay in a slump on the ground, having given up after discovering that her long-lost-friend was here. The mare was neive for thinking he would still be in wait. As it turned out, he had mated. She didn't even have the heart to approach him. Instead, she turned away and let herself be overcome with unnecessary grief. This heart Alcyon to see her like this. That day, he had picked her head up off the ground, laid beside her, and shared her tears. Soft words were whispered to her, ones of a gentle kindness. That night, she slept hard and long, nestled right up against him. It was no victory to have her sleep so close, not like this. Still, he loved her, and watched her rest, till he drifted off to sleep with her.

Swiftmane had woke that next morning, and her heart had broke all over again. This time, for all the right reasons. Seeing Alcyon beside her, caused a wave of pent up emotions to wash over her. Alycon raised his head as she stirred, bright eyes ready to great her with a good morning. Countless mornings, he had shown that same kindness to her. Today, she didn't let him speak. Tears filled her eyes, and she blurted out to him: "Why do you still love me? I've left you behind, and returned none of your affections?
Alcyon filled with concern seeing the look on Swift's face. He had hoped a night of good rest would help her, but knew she was not one to let go easily, if ever. Though he had hoped she would find the closure she needed.
Her question? Softened his concerns. He stretched a wing out and over Swift, and nuzzled her close to him. "I love you, because you need me to love you. For me, that is enough. I need no other reason." His words were so sincere he felt as if his insides might burst from all the love welling up inside him.
His answer had sent Swift into a bought of tears. There was nothing she could say. She could only weep, as the stallion she never deserved, held her close. Her moods were swinging every which way, but her broken heart, gave way to an open heart, even if she didn't see it.
